Random interesting facts about the proper use of names of spacial structures and bodies. I researched all of this recently, but I could have just as easily referenced it wrong! Who knows with the internet.

Technically, the image you see here is not of 'the' Sun or even a 'Sun' at all. It's simply the star that particular planet rotates. So if you were on that planet you would actually say "Look at that star rise, its beautiful!"

The SUN, is the proper name given specifically to the star found in the "Solar System". Also, you may not know this, but Earths planetary system is actually the only one with the proper name "Solar System" and it and all others are actually classified as planetary systems, and while the lowercase 'solar systems' tends to be used a lot to classify all other systems, it is less proper than 'planetary system' as Sol is not present in any of them. Sol is the latin name for Earths star, and this is why many science fiction shows/movies reference Sol as the name of our planetary system.

I know, I know, who cares. Its just that I see that mistake being made a lot by people who assume a SUN is what you call it on every planet... so I thought I would offer that small astronomy info tidbit. With much of Starbounds lore unknown to us except for the fact that we know Earth is most likely not involved in the game or story, the NAME of things will most likely be referenced in the common terms we know of, so I assume people will say things like, Human, and the Sun, a lot. Heres to hoping we find out some of the lore soon. The same happened with Terraria actually, people would complain that the sun rose in the west... but it was never actually The Sun, just the star of whatever planet Terraria took place on.

Another interesting fact is that Earths moon has an actual given name of Moon, with a capital M and all other moons are clasified with lowercase m's and given other proper names. I wonder why we couldnt have been more creative with that one...
In all honesty, I think it would be cool if people started saying Sol instead of Sun. Like "Lets go watch Sol set." :]

And can we rename weapons?

It would be cool to obscure the Sun with Old Spice bodywash. But it would get too cold, so we'd have to make another sun.

That seriously made me laugh out loud. Its kind of how I felt when people were saying pluto was no longer a planet. I was like... BUT I WAS RAISED TO THINK IT WAS!!!! ITS ALL A LIIEEEEEEEE

Or the rock sun is on a death planet of darkness :OOOO

 

Does the Sun affect the planet like in real life?

If yes, is Nuking the Sun considered griefing?

So we can call this star the sun as we conquered that system anyway

By the way, i just saw with my telescope yesterday and i found some nice Solar Systems around the galaxy with some cool Suns in them.
There must be trillions of those.

Are there going be different types of stars? Will there be: White, Yellow, Blue, Brown Dwarf, Giant, Super-giant, Hyper-giant, Binary, Red Dwarf, White Dwarf, And Protostars?
Also, will the distance affect the appearance of said stars?

 

OOOooohhh... I'd love my future Homeworld to Orbit a Blue Star! Blue's my fav Color.
