The Struggle with Races and Ships.

First post here since Giraffe, been a long time but I'm glad to see the game's picked up speed again!

With the advent of ship upgrades, I've found a bit of a problem with the races. I love the fact that the ships are different in shape and structure but, well, I just don't like some of them.

My favourite race? Avian. Which ship do I hate the most in terms of appearance and structure? Avian. I don't want to fly a giant clunky pyramid around space. Same problem with the Glitch - they're my second favourite race but my second-least favourite ship.

I'm indifferent towards Humans, but I love the design of their ship! It's so sleek and neat! And then I don't like the Apex that much, but their ship is decent!

Anyone else kind of have this problem where they don't want to play a certain race because the ship irks them?

Am with you on this, some of the ship designs are disgustingly badly shaped in term of aesthetics, should've made it so we can choose where our extra rooms would be or having more than 1 type of ship upgrade to choose from.

It would be nice if the upgrade consisted of a "build your ship" interface. I don't mean using blocks like with the fully customizable ship mod. I mean turning the current ship segments into their own chunks and building it by sticking them together similar to a puzzle.

Dungeons are generated this way using code, but the ship upgrade can be manually built by the player.
The upgrade would be a permanent creation once built, and cannot be moved around on further tier upgrades(only can add more rooms), as to prevent items from being de-placed if you shift around rooms after confirming a ship set up.

I don't think that'd work due to the way ships are handled. The "space" of the ship is overlaid over a set graphic for each ship, so they can't really be made customisable.

The only real solution I can think of is for the guy who sells you ship licenses (or a new NPC) to sell you alternative layouts somehow.

Each race getting 3-4 ship classes... That'd be a dream come true for me...

Leaving my unreasonable wishes aside, I'm pro less ship upgrades. Smaller ships encourage settlement, their designs are less extravagant and they are less bulky. :p

same goes for the craftable stuff, it would be great if you can access a way to craft other stuffs, because i love novakid style, but i hate the cowboy side and their ship

I find it funny they use a train ship, yet the wildwest was mostly over because of the civilization that the railroads brought.

I agree, I'd like to play both Avian and Glitch but their ships are keeping me from doing it. I just don't like them. I think the shady vendor should be improved to offer you different skins/hulls and different layouts for your ship, possibly through missions or item hunting achievements - like getting a blueprint or a ship core from another type of ship - found maybe sometimes in wrecked ships drifting around in asteroid fields or crashed on planets? There could be more layouts (like smaller ones) and skins available to the player than the racial starting ships.

I agree with this. I happen to love the Apex and Humans a lot but the ships they have make me cringe when I upgrade them. The Diamond of a ship Apex get seems strange to me and the Human ship does not look like anything someone who just escaped the Earth being destroyed. More layouts and other looks for the ships would be great. I think blueprints of different ship upgrades would be great. You could buy them from the black market guy shady gentleman who gives you quests. You could buy blueprints from him that ether add a room, upgrade the size of a room, upgrade your ship's overall size, upgrade the cockpit size or even change the design of ship's outer look. Tho this is just an idea. :chucklefish:

Sounds like a good idea to me! Make it so, or mod it I suppose.

What I'd personally like to see is an option to choose from different ship 'types' with different layouts.

Something along the line of, when you go to upgrade your ship you get more then one option to choose from with previews of how it looks and how the rooms are laid out.

I used to agree. Hated the novakid ship. It's a train how dumb. But I loved my Novakid so I didn't start over

Now although I don't Love the ship. Im still quite attached to it.

Would like putting rooms together as op said that would be sick

Since we upgrade ships based on merchants in the Outpost, I think it should be possible to purchase licenses for other racial ships, instead of only upgrading our own ship license.

That way, I can have a Floran running around in an Apex ship, and get the full experience of a captain's char that smells like monkey butt.

I don't get the hate that people have against the Space Train.
The layout is simple, so you don't have to jump around or go down or anything like that, and it looks nice.
That's just me though, I would understand if you want some more complexity, but the vibes I gather make me sad for Space Train.

well, about the train, two reasons for me:
1 i dont like train really much, and less space train
2 i don't like to have two rooms this far away, i prefere ships where you have the "entry" (aka the teleporter here) in the middle, and all the ship at range of 1 or two rooms, and to have all rooms espaced as such

maybe in the future we gonna have the space station, with many ship dock, where we could choose between the ships (like rich peoples who have a lot of car in there gigantic garage)

I'd like it more/dislike it less if all compartments had the same colour. The green Novakid Ship Lockers look bad otherwise.

yeah, you practically need a skyrail system inside the novakid ship

I gave up on the official ships long ago. None of them appeal to me either aesthetically nor functionally. Just give me a world sized empty ship map and I'll make my own.

I'm just hoping that I can eventually purchase a different race's ship for my char, I like to play Floran, But gods is their ship ugly.

In the long term I would love to see some actual choices play into ship upgrading. The full blown construction capability you can get via mods is amazing, but at the same time I can see how that would be daunting for people who aren't interested in building. With that in mind, I think the ability to place prefabricated rooms around the ship at various connection points, like a jigsaw puzzle, would be the best middle-of-the-road solution. Unfortunately being able to do that would require a redesign of ships in general and a good bit of testing to deal with potential clipping or mismatching of the exterior elements. Of course, if we could place those the same way we place standard decorative items, that would open up even more customization.

In the short term I'd love to see the ability to purchase another race's ship. Even if it is obscenely expensive to make the change, it would be a nice bit of decorative freedom.
