Hello everyone, its me, Dynafols, bwahahahahahahahahaha...ha...heh....huh.... :barefeet:

Anyways, I was a tad bit curious about the public's opinion on the story in correlation with the likely main aspect of the game, exploring, looting, and building.

From my understanding, and what I've heard (correct me if I am wrong/unaware), the game starts off with you finding your way to refuge after escaping the destruction of your home planet caused by an unknown and mysterious power.

I can see this progressing along as to where to continue to work your way up to becoming more and more powerful so that you may be able to destroy (or who knows, possibly ally) this evil force that nom nom nomed your planet up.

So this is where I ask this question upon to you, the general public community of Starbound. Whats your opinion on the potential story of Starbound and how it should be associated with the main elements of the game? (Main elements as far as to our knowledge include, building, blocks, mining, quests, loots, etc).

By this I mean things such as: Every planet and most places to which you travel to may encounter this force. Or perhaps there should be main quests you take that involve the mysterious force and everything else side quests. Or maybe after the main quest-line the rest of the game just says (forget about it) and almost acts like they never existed. Or perhaps the main quest line has almost no effect on everything you do aside from the quests you take that involve this monster. Or maybe the mystery is never solved and is just something like lore that happened to effect you.

Well, lets get down to discussions now shall we? (I hope this is the right forum, always tended to have a problem with being 'sure' of myself).

I'll be honest with you (gets behind a steel plated wall), I've never seen Starwars once in my entire life.

My guess is as good as yours. Unless you work for Chucklefish then i don't know anything more than you do.
I only hope that the plot twist that involves betrayal, because i'm really hoping for some betrayal, it tastes delicious, i get to play this option as a button:

Someone will take you in as an apprentice! Until he's killed...THEN REVENGE!

That is a half serious guess. Since there's no background story for you being a fighter or anything, I figure someone has to teach you. Although I'd rather see for myself how it all rolls out. :p

I think it's probably gonna be an entire separate story from everything else. But it'd be really awesome if everything you do actually ties in with the main story line.

I hope the main story won't have an adverse effect on other planets. If there's one thiing I hate, it's missing out on poetential plotlines/collectibles.

After the explosion you had amnesia, but in the end you find out that YOU CAUSED YOUR PLANET'S DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!!111eleven1

    lol, kidding
i think, storywise, pretty much what we have now is, you (and maybe a bunch opf NPCs) are trying to find a new planet to set your civilization after the destruction of your old homeplanet...
if you gonna find more about the evil force who did it, fight it, ally it or whatever, is probably aimed to the quests we'll find ingame :)

Perhaps so, the question is how much though? Should every quest involve this thing, or just a select number so that we can continue with infinite quests after the main quest line? Or perhaps there won't be a main quest-line at all and whatever destroyed your planet was just some random enemy. Or maybe it will never end and will raise a lot of conspiracy theories.

Also, considering what Tiy has stated once before (I think), that he didn't like the idea of having to create hand made dungeons and puzzles that could grow to being old. This could support the possibility of no real quest-line? Maybe it could be just a "Hey, your planet blew up, this is why, here's a space shuttle, that's the galaxy, have fun"

Also, I wonder if, if there will be a number of different options for our quests, such as A. Save them. B. Kill them C. Live on their planet and start a cooking show.
If there is, maybe we could "create" or at least choose how the story will progress, if there is any deep story to it.

actually, i like the idea of not having a quest-line, but random generated quests somewhat related to the misterious "thing" that destroyed your planet! :giggle:
wouldnt be awesome if, after a few months of the game release, the devs launch a contest for us to idealize the evil thing? \o/
then, the winner's idea becomes the allmighty evil thing, and we get a special coordinate to the ultimate fight!

(of course, a greater evil shall emerge after the ultimate fight ;D )

Well not having a quest line for a sandbox like game for this is pretty reasonable cause you wouldn't want to spend hours and hours on quests (Unless they're fun) on a game with much more potential as a free world which you can do whatever you want. And for the contest, I think it's a brilliant idea cause it's a really community friendly thing with thousands of potential people filling up the gaps of ideas in the game. The special coords thing might not be necessary though cause maybe later in the game we might find a map or something that leads to the ultimate fight thing so that noobs (Trying to shorten new players here, not trying to be offensive) can't just type in the coords and just die instantly there (Although it could be quite funny to watch :giggle:) Overall, this thing is great and I'm absolutely looking forward to the ideas !

(and for the special fight, that could be something very interesting...)

I beleive the "Main Storyline" will just be a long quest line and the rest wil be procedurally generated.

I am pretty hyped for a storyline. Of course, if the people on your homeworld simply went to the local council 4 light years away, they could have stopped their planet being destroyed for an intergalactic highway...

Seriously though, I think it should involve some kind of mysterious ancient, lost civilization, whose technology was used to destroy worlds by the unknown enemy.

And in the end, you discover that the ancient civilization teleported themselves into the future, got confused and went crazy.

Why did they teleport themselves into the future?

You'll have to wait for Starbound 2 to come out! ;)

I would like to see a very open ended main quest.
Along the lines of 'this is your long term goal, (rediscover your home, vengeance, whatever) here are some places that might have things that help'
Then a set of planets that you can visit that have various helpful types of content or useful quest people.

Overall I want a final goal to provide motivation, but I'd like to be able to approach it in multiple ways.
It would be nice if the 'end' of the main quest was also open ended enough that you will want to play further. IE, liberated homeworld.. oh hey, need to rebuild it, repopulate it etc... and those lesser goals lead to endless generated quests for those that want to play with more quest content.

I think there should be multiple endings as well. Like, in the final area, there are several doors you can enter to go against a different boss, making a different ending.

Thing is though, if a game's story is to strong, it could have an effect. That 'feeling' you get after you beat a game that you really enjoyed and experienced but its finally over. I know in this case theres still the sandbox elements and searching for lots of loots and such, but 'that feeling' is still strong regardless, which could potentially, but very unlikely, drive some players away after they complete the ending. But in another way of looking at things, it could attract 3 crowds of people to, people who want to experience a story, people who want a sandbox, and the combination of both.

Touche. Maybe we would be able to create a different ending with the mission creator? That way, gameplay value would last a lot longer.
