The Starbound Reference Thread

Hey, mate. SERIOUSLY? Nintendo's milking Mario? The hell? Like Call of Duty, Halo and God of War? Yeah, they're being milked. You forgot F-Zero, Metroid, StarFox, Zelda and plenty of fantastic titles on the Wii U eShop (via the Virtual Console).

No, you forgot these:

1. Other M was an actual Metroid game, still, CANON. CANON.
2. The game had BRILLIANT graphics in terms of the Wii's capabilities.
3. Other M isn't actually a rip-off, it's part of the Metroid franchise, PART OF IT.
4. The gameplay was awesome, but the story was not. I intended to get it even because it had a bad storyline.
5. Other M's gameplay is based on Super Metroid, the SNES classic.
6. Other M is set in between Super Metroid and Metroid II (2), I think. Not too sure.
7. Just because Samus was upset might have been because she was upset about the last Metroid, because of it's EXTINCTION.
8. Not shoddy.

 

I believe other m was set after super metroid and before fusion. Metroid ii comes before super

 

The name may reference Hewlett-Packard but it is also an homage to Deckard, Harrison Ford's detective character in "Blade Runner", and that is what the quote is from.

 

Item named "Cool Fez". Because fezzes are cool.

Star system names "Beeblebrox" and "Brinstar". Beeblebrox is a reference to a character in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Brinstar is an area from the original Metroid, which was set on a planet named *cough* *cough*... nvm

A Fancy Hat description (http://starbounder.org/A_Fancy_Hat) might be a Homestuck reference (http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Bowler_Hat). Distinguished.

 

loving all of these references , I'll be sure to update once I finish my coffee and can make an actual contribution lol.

 

In Eyeball Biomes you can find ruins of Glitch Castle, where you can ecounter strange winged humanoids with their faces entirely covered by helmets. They look a little bit like Lord Doviculus from game "Brutal Legend"

Most probably it refers to something else, but it was first thing that popped to my head when I saw them.

 

In some avian temples, there is a golden statue of a pillar and then a bunny with rubies for eyes.
the bunny is a terraria reference, as it looks just like it.

 

It's a bit of a stretch but the Bear Hat might be a Serial Experiments Lain reference. The protagonist occasionaly wears this bear suit. She also greets her computer by saying "Hello, Navi." The bear hat descrip is "Hello, merchandise".

The Rock Organ instrument's description "A real stadium filler" is a pretty obvious reference to the music genre of stadium rock.

 

That's actually a real type of ocarina though, called a Sweet Potato.
It's not like they just made up the design for the game.

One I've noticed is one of the Glitch racial helmets resembles a Channeler Helmet from Dark Souls.

 

I DID mention not having consoles growing up and I have not played ANY of the other games you mentioned. Why would I look on WII U shop if I don't have WII U? And All shooters are the same to me. That's why I don't play any.

 

After looking at vanity stuff on Starbounder, the Space Uniform is clearly a reference to Star Trek and the Pilot's Trousers read " Top Ho Squiffy!", which is possibly a reference to the Lone Ranger television program in which he had the famous line "Hi ho Silver! Away!"

 

The armed robot guards in USCM facilities are references to the Droideka from Star Wars. Their head/neck portions are both curved forward, they both have guns attached to their arms, and they create an energy shield around themselves before attacking.

 

These new avian temples spawn with high tech consoles ones in a while with cryptic symbols on them. Kinda remembers me of the Goauld from Stargate. In general some of the Avian stuff remembers me of Stargate (Avian Tier 10 armor for instance...)

 

The captains hats name, description, and look, are all a very clear reference to the TF2 hat, "The Team Captain"

I mean come on.

"Captains Hat" "Whoever wears this must be the captain"

Also im 100% sure that the symbiote is another nod at tf2, as it bears striking resemblance to the triboniophorous tyrannus, a green brain leech hat for the Pyro.

Alteritavley, the captains hat may be referencing M. Bisons' hat, which is what the Team captain was referencing

There is also a Magrathea system, another Hitchhiker Guide reference.

 

Someone wrote up a description of a cosmetic "shark fin" head piece that said it had been found after a strong windstorm. Sharknado anybody?

 

The scout helmet (human tier 2 racial armor, steel) slightly reminds me of doomguy's helmet : P

 

Both the symbiote and that TF2 hat are references to the brain slugs from Futurama.
