As we're getting into gear with the clan planet business and other serverstarty things, I thought I'd share something I came across the other day that you all might find interesting, too, especially relating to delegating tasks for scouting, building, recruiting even, etc. It's a TED talk about motivation--worth the twenty minutes or so, trust me. Also, as for the server, are our usernames/passwords the same as before the update, or should we contact (who?) to update them?
It's online. No usernames or passwords at all right now, since they were only implemented to keep specific people out anyway. Fresh start though. As Shark said, what precisely is happening when you attempt to join?

Hmm... Are you typing the port when attempting to join? It isn't required. Or, potentially, are you typing in a username/password? Those should both be blank. Other than that right now i'm not sure o: I finish work soon so I can help more when i'm at home xD
That's an error that would be caused by either your internet being down, or the server being offline. Make sure you don't fill in anything into the username and password boxes, also make sure you're writing only "109.169.12.48" in the IP field, nothing more. I'd just keep trying, and if the problem persists it's probably a clientside issue.
