Now, technically, I should be asking this over in either the server help or tech help sections, but seeing as this pertains to the Star Veterans server in my particular example and could be of use to new members joining in the thread (like me!), I feel like I should address this to you all: I've been doing some searching and tinkering to try to figure out how to connect to multiplayer servers (specifically, ours here), and amidst all this jargon of port-forwarding and IP formatting, et cetera, I'm finding myself quite lost. You all strike me as communicative people (or at the very least savvy), so might someone explain in relatively plain English how one goes about configuring his or her network to support these kinds of connections? Thanks in advance, and hope that my asking this'll be useful to other/future intimidated neophytes! That said, I'll be sure to relocate this question if someone asks me to/the discussion grows and takes away from the rest of the fun banter here. Edit: See Shark below!
You shouldn't need to portforward at all to connect to our server. If you're encountering a handshake error after attempting to establish a connection, however, that is a game bug that needs to be fixed. All you should have to do to connect is put our IP address (109.169.12.48) and your account password (that I sent to you in our Private Conversation) into the message box that appears when you select multiplayer. If you need any additional help, feel free to message me on steam.
Port forwarding is for if YOU wanted to host the server. IP formatting is for if you want to change your external IP address, which is what people would use to connect to you, but that is handled by your internet provider. These things are nice to know how to do, but for a person like you, just trying to connect to a server, its ultimately unnecessary and might actually be causing the problem. If you do need help with setting up server doodads, or have some other trouble with servers i'd be happy to help you out too (its part of my job in real life to fix this kinda stuff).
Vines could probably forward ports if he needed to, he appears to be intelligent enough. He just didn't know what sort of connection it was for.
