The solution to racial traits

I dont know why nobody posted this before, how about each race simply starts with a racial tech?? Then later they can replace it, and find the techs of other creatures, that way creatures can be unique, can still use other abilities, and doesnt have to wear a certain armor to do something.

Simple and avoids any balance issues with races if we can all find other races techs. I like it.

This is supposed to be the point of racial armors.

Yes, and if you like the idea youll have to start with no abilities, build a racial armor and commit to looking like a bird or whatever your whole gaming life on starbound just to glide, then they will suffice.

If i can double jump in whatever armor i want, and design heroes with certain powers, why do i have to dress all my flying heroes the same way? or all my waterbreathers or whatever. This game is all about freedom for the player, we shouldnt be bound to one look, it drove me crazy that the "ultimate" player in minecraft was a blue doofball, and EVERYONE looked that way.

Plus, if tech is used instead of armor, modding in new race powers will be much easier, at least i assume so.

And that's the point of the cosmetic armor system....

Youll have to elaborate, maybe there is a feature im not aware of to be implemented.

There are two different slots for each piece of armor. One actually effects your character, the other is purely cosmetic. So you could be wearing tier 10 armor, but look like you have on tier 1 armor, or you could wear the back lamp while looking like you have a cape on.

The snag with armours is that there are so many tiers, though.

If I'm trying to progress and need top-tier armor, then it doesn't do much good to have an obsolote tier just for the sake of its armour-set bonus.

I actually like these suggestions of racial techs/powers/abilities (although we don't need yet another thread about it).

Well we haven't gotten much info on the actual racial bonuses in armors, I think each tier will just be a better version of the previous tier, or just include the bonuses from the previous tier in some way.

Thats my very point, as a glitch, i dont want to be forced to wear avian armor to glide, id rather use it as an ability, and to tweak, i know there are many threads, but they are so clogged with posts from people who seem to be offended by the idea of racial traits at all, versus those who only want them to be inherent. I figured it would be best to post a new idea in the open.

My idea, while im sure the designers already have thought about it, can be considered a compromise, the traits arent permanant, and can be aquired by other races, but also make the races unique at the start.

I agree with both, I think there should be racial traits and benefits for racial armor. I don't know why people are against making the races have a more unique play style. It could even be just a further enhancement Avians can glide, but glide more efficiently with appropriate armor. Hylotl can breathe underwater, and swim faster/better with approapriate armor. etc and so on.

I dont like the idea of being restricted to armor, i like dressing to impress, not like a crazy birdman, but i do agree that people should have traits to make them special, in most games like this, once you have pinnacle armor, most people arent special... just another guy in the same suit.

In which case, I'm very confused... as stated previously, your "dressing to impress" problem is fixed with the cosmetic armor system. The armor with the racial bonus becomes completely hidden and the armor with the aesthetic appeal of your choice is what's seen on your person.

    In addition,
I fail to see how this differs from tech in any way. Obviously, for progression to work, the racial tech would have to improve over time as well...unless there's only one set of racial ability tech per race. Either way...you're still just another guy with the same tech, and you aren't special: any tech available to you is available to anyone else, and most likely, several people are going to like the ability you do as well.

That being said, I'm confused to the aversion of racial uniqueness as well...I'm aware of the claims of "imbalance" being made, but that sort of thing seems like it would only apply to PvP servers...and also seems like a function that could be readily toggleable on said servers.

I dont mind being able to start with racial abilities and give them up, i think itd be cool maybe if you could only earn other races abilities by their armor, but your trait remains yours,

I know thats not what i started with, but it makes more sense, the hyloti armor all looks like diving gear, so since they can breathe underwater anyway, its likely designed for other races.

I didnt know ability armor is hidden, thanks for the explanation.

No worries, the GUI could stand to be a bit more informative about that kind of thing.

And that approach makes much more sense, imo, although maybe the armor traits augment the ability of their respective race, and synergize with the abilities of other races? That could make for interesting gameplay...:coffee:

that's what the cosmetic slot is for, so you CAN use their armour but look like you're wearing a different set of armour

Maybe 2 traits? one for the armor, one for the race itself as a tech? both could later be found, but of course the race that starts with them wouldnt have to go through all the same work of finding blueprints and techs.
