There has... Multiplayer server hosts who wish for a completely different universe. What about their choice to run their server as they see fit, but without having to edit files? Some people do like the whole terra incognita thing. The system already exists to change co-ords if that's what people want, and I have seen no good argument why a GUI shouldn't be implemented to make it more user-friendly to do so... Again, if that's what people want.
Well, here's a terrible idea for both sides of the argument. While creating a character, there should be two modes to choose from. Roam Mode, where coordinates are enabled and everything is as-is -- and Random Mode. Where you can't choose which planet you want to go to, but you can choose which sector (Alpha, Beta etc.) and which biome (Forest, Desert etc.) and it will take you to an entirely random planet of those choices.
If the meta-cooperative element that coordinates add to the game somehow offends you for some inane reason, change celestial.config. Do not ruin a fantastically interesting/fun feature for others because it offends you somehow.
Those were features to make the game easier and more enjoyable. Not more challenging. There is nothing wrong with the seed system as is balance wise. They've stated it works as intended. It isn't somehing that covers under beta changes as it is a CORE feature of the game. Intended from the beginning. They can give you the option to play it the way you want, but forcing random seeds between players is a bad idea that ruins the original core aspect. Beta or not from the way you describe wanting a game starbound isn't for you.
Its as if people didnt realize cheating would ruin their fun. Still waiting for the moment of realization.
i really dont see the point of this.... its a singleplayer/coop game, there is nothing competetive about this game if you want to abuse coords, go ahead.... thats your loss that you miss most of game if you dont use coords then why should you care about others doing it.... you have nothing to gain from being unable to, but you certainly have something to lose.... lets say you really want to find mech tech, but you have visited over a 100 planets with bad luck then why, would you not just look up where to find it? if you choose not to, then good for you; if you choose to, then good for you either way, there is no leaderboard or anything so there is no point at all to force people into playing the same way you do, personally i will never look up coords unless i get extremely frustrated looking for something specific, but 90% of the game is exploring its like saying, i think hitting ctrl F on a homepage is cheating, i want to read through everything.... so others are not allowed to use search either
I had lots of fun sharing coordinates of weird stuff I found amongst my friends, but we all played single player. Removing this would remove tons of enjoyment in the game for me.
Personally I like it.. Like people have been saying, it lets you share cool randomly generated things. Removing this would sort of be going the prohibition route, destroy a ton of fun because of the possibility of people abusing it. Even then I don't really have a problem with people abusing it. If you don't want to, you just don't do it, and for some people being able to get massive amounts of resources is a really good thing because it lets them make absurdly complex and amazing structures we wouldn't get to see nearly as many of otherwise.
Exactly. A lot people don't seem to realize that. Terraria and Minecraft are the massive successes that they are partly because they allow folks to be very creative with what they can build. Heck, Notch even added a game-mode specifically for that purpose after he saw what people were using the game for.
Exactly. That's the point of the game. There are many other closed games with high restrictions on what players can do for those who are too irresponsible for freedom. If you can't handle the power you're given then this game isn't for you. Neither is being responsible in life.
I wouldn't really call it "coordinate abuse", I mean if a player REALLY wants a certain item and cannot find it or he wants to do things, let him, there could also be some pretty cool terrain or such that you can share. I think it just brings the community together even more.
I don't think it's abuse, I think it's neat. It's a feature that hasn't really been done before, procedural generation + permanent shared space. It's not like the gains from the mild exploitation are that egregious.
I just worry that most kids will ruin their own fun and Starbound will lose it's playerbase because someone beat the game too fast and don't want to play anymore because there is nothing to look forward to. I worry for the game because I care about it's future.
And something I posted in another thread made me realize something. The only reason that coordinate sharing is being abused as much as it is, is because of the decided lack of ranged weapons in the early game. No guns drop randomly in the first tier. And random drops are just that, random. If we had a craftable ranged weapon that uses the same combat mechanics of the guns, rather than the bows, it would go a long way towards satisfying a hunger that the players obviously have.
I got swamped with work a while back after I was absorbing everything Starbound related so I might have missed how this came about or maybe my own ignorance, but I had thought Starbound had the same random generation of a world like Terraria? Or was this turned down due to complications? I guess its the explorer in me that feels let down that everyone elses universe is the same as his.
Make it so that on the first time a universe is created, there are a random assortment of unique features to be placed onto worlds: tech chests, avian gunships, villages, labs etc. Make there be a minimum amount and a maximum amount so that there's not too many and not too few that a player will never find a gunshop or gravity bubble tech in his adventuring career. You'd need to be careful not to have multiple features overlap on a single world though. Just give each unique feature an ID followed by how much grid space it takes up and have the code look for 'normal space' so that it fits. Airships have an anchor which might interfere with houses. Underground areas will be the main problem. Some areas like the lab come with a tech chest. Regular tech chests are just found in a cavey area and will lead to conflicts with stuff like temples. It makes me so mad when people say "the solution is to not use coordinate charts". That is NOT the solution. Many people, myself included, feel gratification when his achievements in a game are equally weighed against every other player. If others can abuse the system, get guns, get advanced techs, progress in the game faster, then what's the point? Life is a competition. Anyone who disagrees has given up and resigned themselves to a life of complacency. Basically, it's not the gamer's responsibility to exert self restraint in order to enjoy a game. If the design of a game is good then everyone should be able to enjoy it at the same time. This should be a big priority quite frankly. Playing on a dedicated server, with server-side characters, with tech chests and normal chests that are bound to a character's ID to avoid playing in a treasure-less universe-- that is where this game's mechanics should be heading. I'm glad that the devs for this game seem to be actually listening to their community and willing to say "we made a mistake, let's fix it". Just look at the recent failures of Rome2 and XRebirth. So to summarize: Make it so that pre-generated unique features are placed into available space randomly at the universe's creation. Note to developers: Not all ideas are great. It's up to you to be sensible and figure out the best ones. I assure you that the idea of procedural random generation will single handedly extend the longevity of this game, which is one of the main issues at the moment.
I can use this same argument to say I don't want my enjoyment of the coordinate system removed because you feel it's too easy and cheapening.
I can see a pattern: people who like the coordinate system play single player, but while chatting with their friends about it to share the exploration. People who don't, tend to play in multiplayer and everyone rushes to the good item loots. I'm playing in single player, I measure myself against no one. That is how I enjoy the game. Make multiplayer sessions default to a random universe seed. Done.
Nobody is making you play the game. You don't have to like every game you play. That doesn't suddenly make it a bad game or a bad feature because you disagree with it.
