The scary aspect of Starbound

Amnesia is the best example of a game that could have been scary but ultimately failed. The only scary part of that game is the very beginning, you hear sounds, you see traces of things, you know something is there hunting you. When you finally see the monster, the fear is over. But I don't think really having "fear" in a game like SB would be do-able.

Huh. In my opinion amnesia kept its horror going all the way until you reached the prison. Ofcourse everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I don't find monsters I can run around to be scary. Sure you can hide and they will walk about and do their own thing, OR you can just... you know, run past them. They are slower then you. That is a fatal flaw with a lot of "scary" games, you are given the option to run and you are faster then the thing hunting you. The absolute best 2D game I can think of for horror is Metroid Fusion (as already mentioned) not only can the SA-X kill you very easily, but it is just as fast as you are, you HAVE to hide from it. Now if SB had a very powerful quick monster and you had to "Trick" the AI and hide, then it would be scary.

Zombies, boo! I would think it would be scary, that near the end of the game, every single npc on your ship, are all undead mindless animals wanting your organs in their mouth. I think this would work better in a game like mass effect, where you really get into relationships with the characters, and you actually care about them, and then BOOM all they want now is for you to die. I would cry :(

Fear is easy fear is what makes you buy stuff not fear itself but the fear of not having it basicly Fear sells so fear should be somewhat easy

In a 2d game it's hard for something to sneak up behind you.

In Terraria, it was still scary, and besides, at night-time it looks pitch-black without a flashlight (From the screenshots they have shown). In Terraria, when you saw a zombie early game, you were like, "Holy crap run away run away!!" And then you would jump over a few zombies and continue running.

Something scary. In my opinion scary goes a little like this.

You can't outrun it, you can't overcome it, you can't even observe it. Yet, you know it's there, you know it can see you, you know it can hear you, smell you, and perhaps even taste you. You just hope, you fucking pray, that it can never touch you.

That sort of thing is what I think scary really is.

    Is the answer "time"?

I was going for a sentient being there. Don't really know how time could taste you. That, and time always touches you.

For whatever reason, I have always found 'retro' styled graphics to be capable of far, far greater bone-chilling fear than most games that show you every pockmark in a zombie's dragging intestines. I'm not positive why, either.

Maybe there's something about the minimalist animation. Maybe it's just nostalgia kicking in? Remembering all the scary moments I've encountered in games past, where you couldn't really get away with massive amounts of hyper-realistic gore to startle the viewer. Games relied more on sound, or in some cases script, to get that idea across. I dunno!

My point is, I don't think there's going to be a lack of tense moments when it comes to this game, by virtue of its lovely art style. I'm a bit biased of course, I absolutely adore pixel art (though I'm rubbish at it myself). Seeing something just float, sidle, or flat out run in from the side of the screen, noiseless or otherwise, after only catching a glimpse of it when swiping your flashlight around.. not knowing what it is or if it's coming at you specifically, brrrr. Those moments make exploration games the genre I've fallen in love with.
