My fic is getting too long, so I split it up. First 16 chapters are still available at the initial link, part 2 is linked at the bottom. I'll add this to the OP. https://docs.google.com/document/d/18_FnSPIlroQbF1VktAV8gk-HoebdkJJGSeqM9NYebHI/edit
Read up to chapter 7. So far the fighting seems excessive, but I love the interactions between Rei and Kana, and I think they're great characters in general. I also like the world building, like how football is still a thing, and the city planets.
Chapter 19 done, 20 almost done and 21 planned out. Once 21 ships, I'll ask everyone if they'd be in favor of reading a short interim story about Kana going around and waging a five-man war against the EC.
Actually, I got a sore throat literally yesterday. I'll see how this pans out and try to get the writing out before the ideas burst in my head. Sorry!
This is by far one of the most amazing things I have ever read. The dialogue fit each character and their personality and actions making them feel alive. I also noticed so many awesome things like a Deadspace like situation (more like exactly), dark souls (Leoven with his saying of "Jolly cooperation" The Y when saying "Praise the Sun" and the entire section with the Eye) I caught some more earlier but I need to reread to be perfectly sure. The plot is also flowing amazingly well bringing new characters in and out in a good way that doesn't ruin anything. I honestly can't wait until the next chapter comes up
Reposted from OP Faction Calculus: Streamlining how races are organized in the 'verse. Since there's invariably a lot of fighting in my fiction and lots of diplomacy and factions are present, I'm going to present my view of the Starbound 'verse species military/fighting forces from an RTS/Deadliest Warrior standpoint with a short little descriptor each. Humanity: Traits: Balanced, ranged combat focus, determined. Parts Call of Duty and Battlefield. The bulk of human fighting forces consist of United Systems Colonial Marines fielding advanced, but mass-produced equipment. Thousands of years of technological advancement, deterred by thousands of years of politics have created a rock-solid fighting force capable of operating anywhere. Politics and disagreements have resulted in a multitude of splinter groups fielding their own forces, of which are highly variable in tactics and technology. In battle, marines primarily employ squad tactics when they can, relying on battle-tested technology and sheer guts to win fights. Avian: Traits: Above par, hybrid melee/ranged, disorganized, fearless. How the average Starbound player fights. All Avian warriors are trained from birth solely for the glory of combat in the name of their god, except the ones who aren't. Nevertheless, Avian warriors are highly effective with their signature rapid-fire blasters and a multitude of melee weapons. In battle, Avian warriors operate independently, each one seeking to slay enemies for the glory of Kluex. Close-quarters fighting against a group of Avian Honor Guards is a quick way to a fast and brutal death. Grounded Avians are a little more down to earth and employ squad tactics when possible, though each fighter has the same lust for fame and notoriety burning deep within their heart. Apex: Traits: Elite army, ranged focus, fearless. Ghost Recon style focus and coordination. The Apex are, for the most part, a scientist species who prefer to skirt external threats with eloquent diplomacy/deception and internal threats with brutal subjugation. Those who choose (or are chosen) for the defense of the Miniknog are subject to thorough, elite training and brainwashing, making them completely loyal to the Miniknog regime. Apex Marines are few in number, but highly trained and fielding the latest in military technology. They operate in small groups with strong communication and use of tactics, crushing foes with extreme force and prejudice. Scattered resistance members and cells, unable to match the technology and tactics of their loyalist brethren, focus on guerrilla tactics, spying, and sabotage. Floran: Traits: High numbers, hybrid melee/ranged, brutal. Zerg rushes. Florans are explosive breeders who mature rapidly and spread aggressively. Their tribal culture revolves around hunting and gathering, and when one planet's game is not enough, they simply spread off-world, overtaking any occupying force with sheer numbers. Each individual Floran is fairly hardy, but ill-equipped with primitive armor, weapons, and intelligence. In battle, Florans rush at individual targets, impaling, slashing, smashing, or stabbing with spears, longbows, and hammers. Their penchant for reverse-engineering technology became highly evident after a crash-landed Apex Marine vessel led to the entire race acquiring shock prods, grenade launchers, and needle-spitting handguns in a matter of months. In battle, Florans will either stalk and hurl spears and arrows from a distance, or simply rush in and brutally maul a victim to death, and then probably eat him. Glitch: Traits: Balanced, melee focus, heavy armor. Tanky Chivalry Medieval Warfare type fighting. The Glitch, keeping in mind with their medieval ethos, focus on individually tough infantry employed en masse in conjunction with cavalry and siege weaponry in battle. Individually Glitch soldiers and knights are well-trained, but not exceptionally so, and use sturdy weapons and armor to protect themselves on the battlefield while slaying their foes. Unable to shake their medieval ideas, Glitch warfare tactics have not changed very much in the last few cycles, though inter-Glitch fighting has refined their tactics to near perfection for a relatively primitive race. Glitch armies prefer overwhelming their opponents with brute strength, or locking down into prolonged sieges. In close quarter combat, Glitch knights and soldiers will attempt to close the distance between foes, soaking up fire with their sturdy shields before engaging enemies in melee combat. Hylotl: Traits: Elite army, melee combat focus. Think of the Tenno from Warframe but using tech and without guns. A relatively new force, Hylotl warriors focus are small in number but highly trained. After diplomacy invariably breaks down, the last option available is violence. Hylotl warriors are trained throughout their life to equalize mind and body with the universe, resulting in a Hylotl equal parts diplomat and warrior. It is said that the Hylotl as a whole tend to place themselves high above other races: while false for many aspects, this is, unfortunately, true for their swordplay and mythical blades, each individual samurai a match for five comparable warriors of any other race. In battle, Hylotl operate in regiments that splinter off into groups of up to eight, relying primarily on their melee weapons and fearsome harpoon-launching longbows. Hylotl warriors are highly adaptable and open to incorporating whatever they can find - though often trained without the use of tech, many choose to incorporate it in their combat, making Hylotl warriors a fearsome and unpredictable foe.
Floran: Traits: High numbers, hybrid melee/ranged, brutal Florans are explosive breeders who mature rapidly and spread aggressively. Up to chapter twenty something now. The worst of my finals are over, so I can start writing more. Remember to comment with feedback if you have anything to say at all. I enjoy feedback, as long as it is constructive.
Very good writing style, really small amount of typos, enjoyable story and believable characters. Got me hooked up enough that I managed to read both parts today. Can't wait for more.
This is the best fan fiction I've ever read, and one of my favourite stories I've ever read. I've been wanting to say that for a while but my email wasn't registering properly! I hope you continue to add more, but if you don't I'll be happy you got it this far!
I liked reading the first part. Figured I should comment before I started the second. It's been a great read. Helps pass my time during the work day to get out my phone and read a few pages. Google docs are tough to work with, often losing my place when Safari crashes or the page accidentally reloads but it was worth the effort. I plan to start part 2 in the next few days and look forward to it.
Been a while since I touched this. Going to systematically rewrite it starting from the beginning, polish it up and change a few things for more internal consistency.
Definitely an amazing story by anyone standards, My only criticism is that you seem to jump from spot to spot in the story, what i mean by this is that for me at least the scean change dosen't flow together as well (For me at least) but considering that I've only read oh 2-3 chapters of it i could be blowing smoke out my ass; but non the less it's fantastic and keep up the good work!
