Well, after catching up with what's been posted, I've concluded a few things, the most prominent being that I absolutely must start watching Doctor Who and Torchwood. In other news, I'm almost done with this semester, so I'll be much more available on the forums in the months to come.
This just in, Minnesota is now officially the twelve state in the US that allows for same-sex marriage. While this makes me very happy I'm still sad about Louisiana's stance on same-sex marriage and the Federal government not doing more. Oh well, this will probably be a slow process such as the Civil Rights Movement. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...ota-senate-passes-same-sex-marriage-bill?lite
Is that Civil Partnerships, or actual Marriage? Here in the UK we're still having a debate because of those annoying entitled Christians thinking that their interpretation of the bible is the only thing that matters. I watched Question Time last night and it came up again, thankfully most of the audience was for the bill, against the one guy who bought it up who stubbornly refused to listen to FACT.
They can actually get married. Though still way more than half of the states it's illegal. Really the biggest argument against it in the US is that it goes against the bible (even though religion can't force laws) and that it will take away a 'Mother' figure and a 'Father' figure in raising a child. Also there are some people whom will argue that if gay marriage is passed then everyone will become gay and I'm just thinking what the hell are they on.
The bible thumpers in the US, afaik, mainly claim that allowing gay marriage, violates their right to their religion, or something asinine like that. There's a similar thing going on in parts of Canada, where there was an anti-bullying law passed. Part of the law states that schools must allow/tolerate a gay-straight-alliance to exist. It doesn't say schools have to help or even to endorse GSAs, just that they have to tolerate them. But some schools are like--and I'm serious, they are actually saying this--"to allow a GSA in our school violates our religious rights." So it actually seems ok in their minds, that their "religious rights" allow them to tell a group of kids "no, you aren't allowed to do this." Like they are allowed to violate kids rights to like, freedom of association and things.
For the most part, (at least where I am) that is right. Though obviosly not all religious people; I know some that are fully for gay marriage.
