The Problem with Pixels..

First off I would just like to say its been a wonderful adventure playing this game and its going to be awesome watching it grow.

    Now to the juice.

The Pixel system/money, particularly how it affects items and levelling should be reviewed.

Currently, Pixels are required to construct higher tier armours, weapons and tools. And currently, on death, the player looses 20% of his or her pixels as of the latest patch.

Requiring money, or Pixels, to essentially progress through the game, via weapon and armour upgrades gives a somewhat grindy feeling. Death effectively slows down game progression and may require the player to farm in order to regain the money in order to construct something. This is regardless if they already have all the minerals to construct the Items.

why is this so bad? its a challenging game mechanic that discourages death and encourages the players skill and attention to stay alive.

normally I would love this mechanic, Rogue Legacy and even Dark Souls are built around this concept and both very good and successful games.

however where this becomes a problem is that instead of punishing the player your forcing them to grind for pixels in order to progress. grinding is a punishment yes, but its not a fun punishment. games like Rogue Legacy or Dark Souls punish the player for dying but the death does not hold the player back, a lack of souls or money wont prevent the player from progressing in these games. Everything can be done in Dark Souls at starter level.

however a lack of Pixels in this game does hold the player back. you cant progress without the proper gear, the mechanics are built around the fact that if your armour or weapon level is not equal or greater to the enemy you are fighting, you do less damage and the enemy does more.

Im all for a punishing death system but not one that pushes the player backward.

This system will probably be rework in the coming updates but its something I hope to be heavily considered. This game will always be compared to Terraria and look how far you can progress in that game without money or fighting? is there anything in that game that holds the player back from building items and armour? no its all down the player exploring.

New gear that can be crafted should NEVER require pixels. It should, if anything, require more materials. It has the same effect (should take just as long) yet the death penalty doesn't push people down. This, however, should be countered with NPC's having better gear in their stores and have their pixel prices even higher: while it doesn't push players back, it certainly does mean dieing is not a good thing.

I kinda agree. Maybe if they found a better less grindy solution. All it does is piss you off, I'd like it better if you didn't lose any pixels and there was a hardcore mode where you only have 1 life or 3. I haven't played the game so I may have just said derp things.

If pixels were to be replaced in the materials needed for armor, I think it would be a good opportunity to have monsters drop materials depending on what biome they are in. You may only be required to go to Jungle and arid planets for low tier, but as you get higher in tiers, you would need mats off of monsters on moons and in tundras. Maybe go so far as sub-biomes. I think that would promote exploration and planet hopping a little more.
