It seems a lot of people say that they found the Erchius boss difficult, even when they know the mechanics to fighting him. Im curious to how large a % that is (at least the % of the forum community), please vote (and feel free to comment in this thread also).

Incase someone wishes to know the mechanics to fighting the boss before making their judgement:
The boss isent realy hurt by normal weaponry, instead you have to use the four switches around the room to power up the cannon bellow it, after its powered up you have to activate it to fire. The boss dies from 3 cannon shots.

The boss has two different actions, one is using lasers that move around in different patterns depending on how damaged the boss is, the other is spawning minions at the bottom of the room.

It should be mentioned that the only way not to get hit by the last laser pattern (one cannon shot from killing the boss) is to either block or be directly above or below the boss.

You can block the lasers using a sheild or a two-handed sword. Just make sure you perform so called perfect blocks that dosent drain the sheild.

The current poll results are somewhat frustrating to me (overwhelming response of "easy" as of this posting), but it could simply be that the question itself is misleading. It's not the boss ITSELF that is all that hard; it's a fairly reasonable puzzle boss that forces you to figure out the trick by way of obscenely punishing damage if you screw up. That in itself wouldn't be a problem.

What makes the encounter "hard", unreasonably so, is the complete lack of any checkpoints anywhere in the mission. If you make ONE mistake you are forced to respawn on your ship and run through the entire mission again--and it is a rather lengthy map--just to get another shot. To me, that one single element makes the entire boss room much harder and more frustrating than it should be. There are far too many ways to die, not just from the laser beams. Getting caught in a flesh spray at the wrong time, WHILE trying to dodge a beam. Getting hit by the beams that cross themselves if you don't know the pattern. Or just missing a jump while trying to dodge and falling to the bottom.

The slightest little innocent slip and boom. You have to run through the whole thing again. Yes, people like to say you don't have to actually fight anything and can make it through in two minutes if you bum rush and ignore enemies, but that's not my idea of fun. If you're ignoring the enemies put into your path in what's supposed to be a combat-based dungeon (there's certainly no puzzles or exploration to be had, it's a pretty linear place), doesn't that mean you're not having fun? And isn't that what games are supposed to be about?

I loved everything about that dungeon until I got to the boss room. Just one checkpoint of some sort right before the crystal boss would make things still difficult, but MUCH more reasonable.

The Boss isn't hard or easy, the whole damned dungeon is hard. The level is almost entirely low-light requiring you to juggle the flashlight and your weapon. The enemies are not overpowered, but they are notably stronger than anything you will have faced to this point and are found in groups of 2-4, making survival very iffy. The infected miners are really cheap, and having a gauntlet of them right before the boss is very unpleasant. I am not a skilled platformer, and the level layout is punishing. I've said it before on other forums and I'll likely have to say it again, GIVE ME THE SPACE SANDBOX YOU SOLD ME. Having nearly the entire game gated behind this mission is offensive to me.

Don't want this game to be too easy. It's already too easy outwith boss fights. I thought night time would have brought out tougher planet-based enemies, but no.. It's peaceful.

    I votet "hard".

This boss is not like many (all?) others - simply shoot him alot. He requires an unusual tactic and his lair is built to have enemies die by falling damage. This is all good and nice - but he is the _very first_ boss and that makes him especially annoying. That there is no restart point before the battle just adds to the pain.

This evil thing reminds me of the first boss of "Darksiders" (Tiamat) - that one made me throw the game away to never touch it again.

    I completely agree with JetMagnum.

There are actually a few lamps/flashlights that you can turn on, as well as some consoles that will turn on lights. I'm not a skilled plattformer either (...I'm not even a skilled anything, lol), this is what I did: Jump onto the nearest plattform they could not reach and use my bow. It just took me 2-3 hits per mob, so it's not THAT much longer.

fall damage is trivial if you have the double jump tech which you SHOULD have if you did the coffee quest

Intressting to see that the majority considers the boss neither hard or easy (a good spot in my humble opinion). But worrying to see that 6 out of 20 finds it hard.

well , i played the game for over 200 hrs now , im used to the mechanics , but i killed the first boss very easily without diying the first time i got to him ... i actually wished for him to be more difficult .... like the robot farter in the game .... wich i had to kill threw the door because i couldnt handle him =P

(While not related to the thread i still feel like mentioning it: you can no longer kill him trough the door, he now has a drop down hatch like the erchius horror does).

I figured out the puzzle on my first attempt. But I died. I tried again knowing what to do... and I still died. The third run I cheated by using /admin so I wouldn't have to run through the whole dungeon a fourth time.

I completely agree. The dungeon is significantly harder than anything up to that point in the game. Going in with steel armor is a joke. I probably go through 20 bandages per run, if not more... and I'm using a gun! The infected miners have way too much HP, I basically have to sit out of reach and spend a couple minutes plinking them to death.

It really isn't hard. What makes it a retarded boss fight is the lack of a checkpoint, as JetMagnum stated. If you make a single mistake and get hit by the laser, you die. Then you have to run thorugh THE WHOLE DUNGEON again. This is just sad. It becomes stressful after some time. i know the entire terrain of the dungeon by now, because of the many times i had to do it again.

you need to craft more thing before going in there ... Lantern on a stick , + a descent gun .... no damage trough the whole run ... and double jump tech for the boss and rotate at the same time as his lazers , when double lazer, stay in bottom middle then duck ... no damage at boss neither ...

The laser wont kill you instantly. So its not "a single mistake and you die instantly". Its "a number of mistakes piled ontop of each other without taking (or not having) the time to heal and you die".

    I voted easy, and here's why;

    - Simple pattern
    - Never moves
    - Use a mechanic (that's NEVER explained ingame) to effectively make the boss do no damage.

Sure, the simple pattern also applies to Dreadwing and Shockhopper, but "IT SHOOTS LASERS, IT DOES NOTHING FOR A BIT, IT POOPS AN ENEMY, IT SHOOTS AGAIN is pretty basic.

Well, i defeated it. Here's my conclusion:

    - As i said before, it wasn't hard. Not even close, actually. In fact, it is..
    - Retarded. Yes, it was literally a retarded boss fight. All i had to do, was go under it, so the lasers stopped, then quickly run to activate the levers and shoot it.
    - It didn't feel right. It felt like i was cheating, using an exploit that the devs weren't aware of. So yeah, it's not hard. It's just immensely retarded.

If you could at least just run though the dungeon again after dying that would be pretty damn stupid but at least acceptable. But right now you're back to 0 and have to start over and flip switches etc. Instant ragequit for me after dying from fall damage.................

Sigh.. tried again, died twice before I managed to get to the boss room and missed the first platform and fell to my death...

Is there a cheat or something to get past this bullshit? If I wanted an annoying difficulty I'd go play castlevania..

The boss is extremely easy but the no-checkpoint business makes an already tedious task even more so for people who are unlucky with their first encounter of the boss.
Tedious is the best way to describe all of it.

well you obviously need more skill in these type of game if falling damage is the way you keep diying. I for one wish they don't put in checkpoint during mission, as it would really make this game Way too easy . And btw , castlevania isnt that hard lol.
