What I want is simple, and its even been modded into Minecraft. Books, I want the ability to make a bookshelf and leave books in them each with things written by people and that can be read by people. A. CUSTOM MAPS! Just imagine the ability to use them for quests! B. Knowledge storing, if we can write things down we can make literal reference books. C. Who DOESN'T want a Library filled with books. D. You can make a way to copy books and sell them in game for people to fill their libraries. Herowho: Plus, you could make a journal or something, in case you were doing something that's not technically a quest, you could read back to your journal in case you forget what you were doing. I know this all sounds like much but its honestly something I would LOVE in the game. Hmm looking back I guess what I was was not simple after all. So apparently this idea is REALLY Popular, Both Suika Ibuki, and Alexblex had made a topic about the exact same thing. (After this one, which has been burried for a bit.) Devs, we want book!
I agree with this wholeheartedly. I think it would be cool to be able to find books that would refer to some sort of backstory to the world of Starbound. Plus, you could make a journal or something, in case you were doing something that's not technically a quest, you could read back to your journal in case you forget what you were doing. Also, having a massive library would just be BOSS.

Oh, aside from log books you could also use that for crafting. If the crafting menu were similar to minecraft you could keep logs on how to build each item.
Day 76: This is the 76th day. I was woken up hoping I was having a reoccurring nightmare. We spent more than 36 hours earlier today relocating our campsite closer to our dig site, only to be ambushed by local wildlife that's hungry coming out of hibernation. Half of my staff was eaten alive or killed by Skags. I survived by hiding under a colleague of mine who was being devoured on top of me. His name was Carl. My... emotions are deadened and I grieved for none of them. In point of fact, the only emotion I felt was that of joy. I felt joy because his chair was always more comfortable than mine! I took his chair. And then I noticed the emissive glow on the rocks at the dig site...

Yes, yes, I find this quite exquisite and factible. I have true feelings of excitement for this incredibly brilliant idea. I shall tell my chaps about this.
Ah ONee-Chan. I agree. An incredibly interesting idea. Perhaps then, we should have the ability to make catalogs others can look at of say.... Monsters, Plants, Ores, Shiny things, and so on, Listing every details from stats, resource use, to why it tastes good in tea!
Perhaps something more fitting for the station at the beginning a computer or laptop to store your logs in and a pda for writing while planet side that is uploaded on return to the station. And after you have set up a base on a new planet you can write in book and store them.
Oh like... oh whats it called... the little hand things you grab that spit out a hologram? that you can read? (you see them in alot of futuristic movies)
Oh boy. I certainly like this idea, though I'd probably get little use out of it. I can't think of anything to improve on it though. Hopefully your journal won't be an actual item, instead being a little icon you could click on or something. And you'd read and write from the window that opens up.
