RELEASED The Orcana

    It's been a while since I posted a WIP image of the stuff that I currently have in the works. I have been working on building materials (blocks, platforms, etc.) and objects that will be used in the Orcana villages and threw together a concept village house to help me see how it will all look in-game. Here's a SS of what I have so far.

    This includes my new Coral Brick, Coral Pillar, Coral Platform blocks and the Orcana Chair, and Orcana Strip Light objects. The roof blocks are still wip, and I got a little carried away with the strip lights, but what do you guys think so far?

    Got to say I'm down with everything your doing here. It almost feels like all the other race mods are done and have just not been touched in the past year, or aren't anywhere close to completion, or just don't follow the same cultural theme that Starbound's races follow (Avians pulling from an Egyptian theme, Hylotl from Japan, that kind of thing), and while there are some amazing race mods out there, this feels like it's the whole package... Plus it's an aquatic race that's not a freakin' "pacifist" mudkip race that prefers being beautiful over everything else (never quite liked the hylotl, never resonated well with me.)

    Ooooh. I really like the way the strip lights work. I think I'll probably end up using those in way more than just Orcana structures, because who doesn't like futuristic strips of glowy light?

    By the way, I realized I never posted my Orcana's home, so here it is!

    There's still a lot of space I've yet to fill out with furniture and decorations, but that's because I wanted to keep my options open. I drew inspiration from real Greco-Roman architecture for the design, as you might expect, so I used Soft Brick and Clay Roof Tiles, plus the Orcana borders you find in the ship (which I replicated with the help of the Universal Uncrafter mod, I admit). The crystal parts were added by me in an attempt to give the place an "Antlantean" vibe, but I'll probably change those up once the lights are officially part of the mod.

    Wow! That's really big. I like what you did with the archways in the upper left. I think I'll have to make some nice coral fencing to use for balcony railing like that. I may do something for wall trim as well so you don't have to use ship blocks.

    I tend to get carried away with my building projects, haha. And thanks! I looked at a fair smattering of pictures Roman villas, and I decided I needed a cool covered porch.

    Oooh, coral fences! That sounds AWESOME. Maybe the block used for ship trim could also pop up in the villages so people could harvest it wild, so to speak?

    I think I'll do a coral themed variant of the ship trim that can be crafted along with the rest of the coral blocks. I never really liked scavenging from villages to get materials. I prefer to be more constructive than destructive.

    That comment about harvesting glowy bits made me think: what if the Orcana grow their glowcorals, and they can craft it into building materials?

    Actually, I was thinking about adding drops to the existing coral and using oshrooms for the glowing ingredient of recipes.

    ... Actually, as I think more about it, the concern of renewability might be an issue if the coral isn't a farmable crop. I wonder if it might be possible to convert existing coral into a farmable... Should just be a matter of patching biome files I suppose.

    Why not make a new coral plant, but with the (modified) pictures of the existing coral?

    EDIT: existing coral does not have the intermediate growing sprites, and are stationary objects instead of a proper farmable. Afraid you'll have to learn how to make farmables (which is kinda easy if you want to crib from vanilla).

    I haven't mentioned this anywhere yet, but I already have two new farmables ready for the next update (one with a new property), so making a farmable coral is definitely doable. I just need to decide if I want to try to convert all normal coral to be that new farmable, or just make a new coral. I'd rather make use of existing coral as a resource if possible.

    Please make farmables take a long time. If not all of them, at least coral because coral takes a long time to build up in real life, and not half a day...

    I agree completely. I've thought about increasing grow time on the ones I have, but they're somewhat comparable to the vanilla plants' grow times. I can always change it if it's an issue. Coral will definitely have a longer grow time though.

    Hey, I'm new here and havn't readed every page, and I have some problems.
    I've installed the Orcana mod(very good work) and the extended race selection mod. After this, everything works fine.
    Than I've installed a new mod, the CreativeMode, and can't start the Game anymore, only when I delete the CM folder out of the mods folder I can play.
    Is the Orcana mod not compatible with the CreativeMode? (sry for bad english, i'm from germany and can't really write it good :/ )

    I honestly have no idea. I've never used or even looked at the creativemode mod to see if anything might conflict. Is that mod still being actively updated? If not, then CreativeMode may not be compatible with the current version of Starbound.

    The original Creative Mode mod is incompatible with the game, not the Orcana. If you must use a cheating mod, use the Zetta team version of Creative Mode.

    I m really dumb. Where shall I do this Mod ??? In the Mod Folder or what ? Cuz its not working. Please help man :(

    Make sure the mod is installed properly so that its modinfo file is at starbound/giraffe_storage/mods/Orcana/orcana.modinfo and also ensure you havea character creation extension mod installed. Please look up the mod installation tutorial for further details.

    Alrighty, folks. It's been a little while, but rest assured that I'm still alive. I have been preparing the Orcana for the 1.0 release. Everything is working properly in the nightly build with a few exceptions that I have been hesitant to fix due to changes in nightly that deviate from what we have been used to. Namely weapon tiers and progression. I have also been adding content as well, so there will be new stuff to look forward to when 1.0 hits.

    As a side note, I recently necro bumped an old post of mine that was buried in the suggestions section of the forums. I really think it could use some additional backing, and anything you guys could contribute to that thread would be awesome. It's not a huge suggestion, but it would add a lot to the atmosphere of the Orcana race, and many other races in the game.

    I applaud you for working behind the scenes for so long. I wish I had the time and energy to do the same.
    Looking forward to playing the Orcana again after I've done some 1.0!

    Good news and bad news. The bad news is that the discussion thread is still borked and doesn't auto post mod updates. The good news is that the mod has been updated! And for those that prefer it, the Orcana mod is also available via Steam Workshop.

    NOTE: Due to internal changes Orcana weapons (bolt gums in particular) have taken a hit and will not work in this version. It is a priority for me though, so I will be fixing them.

    Just uploaded a quick update to remove some weapons files that were causing internal errors. This should clear a bunch of errors from your log files. Once I get the weapons updated to the new active system they will be re-implemented.
