The new update coming...

I realize it states there will be no more character wipes due to the backwards compatibility, but does that mean that the next update will be the last wipe, or does that mean we won't have to experience it anymore? Just curious =)

 

I believe the next wipe will be the final wipe.

 

As far as we know right now there will be a final wipe, but I did just ask verification on that specific point on Twitter.

 

I read the tweet as "all characters and ships are backwards compatible in the future update" meaning no final wipe at all

 

Keep in mind that even if updates after this next one don't require a character wipe, I'm not sure that means a new character won't be recommended for one reason or another in order to get the full changes. If that has been spelled out somewhere I missed it, so I'll probably still be starting new characters after big updates anyway.

I take it as last forced wipe.
There may be soft wipes that you need to do yourself. Like requiring you to move to a new planet for different ore distribution.

 

That's the working assumption, and most likely conclusion, but it's a bit nebulous and could be taken either way hence the need for one bit of clarification as this will result in us discussing it to death until then

 

I would definably expect a character wipe, the last one but still a wipe.

 

People just need to remember that it is the final Char/Ship wipe, it does NOT prevent future wipes of the universe.

 

If there is a wipe, it's all good.

I'm thinking an Asteroid Field base next, since I love that biome

(T10 armor + Survival System + Grapple Hook == Win)

 

It also does not prevent bugs that may cause a character/ship to be lost. We are still in early beta after all. I really appreciate Chucklefish making this move for characters, but I'm going to keep Murphy's Law in mind before becoming too attached to any setup I have.

 

Honestly, I don't mind universe wipes, but then I'm one of those types who will hope from planet to planet just to look around so if anything it would just motivate me to continue exploring and collecting junk to store on my ship

IMO, Given the near-unlimited planets in SB, it would make sense, in case of backwards-incompatible updates to freeze colonized planets at the time they were settled, but still allow not yet colonized planets to use the latest updates, so that players don't lose their work on existing planets but also don't miss out on new content for future planets.

However, I don't know whether Chucklefish intends this to be the solution, and whether it will be in the next update. It would be nice to get some more details specifically about whether the next update changes wipes/update logic for planets.

 

Since the next update specifies character and ship wipe, does that mean I can leave all my supplies, armor and such on my home planet and go back to it? Or is a universe wipe implied as well?

 

I'd expect a full wipe.

 

The next wipe is definitely the last known wipe. While some problems may arise that requires this, I doubt it. I haven't played since Angry Koala because I want this wipe to happen so I can get really deep into the game... That being said I have a LOT of play time. Anyways, when does this new update come?

 

Source? All i've heard was a wipe protection for Characters and ships. Not universe.

They clarified the clarification. No more wipes after the next patch.

 

Now we just need to that final wipe to happen so we can start playing again, and this time with feeling! My body is ready, is yours? heh
