People seem not to mind the backpedaling. Although, if you're like me you're running from monsters trying to hit the 'beam up' button but you start to slow down because OF COURSE you have a gun in your hand and suddenly for no reason start going SUPER slow and die.

    ....If you're like me....

Pretty sure there's a beamup hotkey.

You know, if this speculation about guns becoming overpowered is actually the reason for slower backpedaling, it occurs to me that a better solution would be to make the Energy Dash tech force you to face the direction you're dashing in. If you're not using energy dash, a melee fighter could catch up to you plenty fast, and if you are, you'll only be able to fire back at fairly predictable intervals, making your shots easy to dodge/block.

I dunno about guns being overpowered, but my question is - what is the reason behind Devs being so focused on melee combat? I already know that argument: "It's a sci-fi game, at least in theory so focusing on ranged totally makes sense" won't fly because Starbound supposedly isn't a sci-fi game. To minimize effect from how bad random mobs are at attacking ranged character?
And one more thing. It's quite sad that Devs are still so stubborn about all races being equal to each other (aside from Novakinds, a bit). Otherwise it could be interesting to add some specialization to weapons PC use based their races. Melee and bows to Glitches, Avian and Florans, ranged to Humans, Novakids and Apex, techno-mage stuff to Hyotl.
This could spice a bit dull game progress we have right now.

Really, I am not happy about the crafting of equipment at all. The best equipment should not be crafted from ores - that is mediocre equipment, at best being equivalent to high-end gear of the previous tier. The best equipment should be crafted from the rarest materials from the hardest micro-biomes and dungeons, as well as from hard miniboss (not the giant monsters, proper minibosses!) drops, and with recipes which can only be attained from extremely hard quests, dungeons and bosses (maybe not progression bosses, as those are easy).

I wonder if slower backpedaling was even put in because of guns. Honestly, I think it's more likely it was done for some confused idea of realism, and, as others have pointed out, to compensate for the slipperyness of movement.

It was awkward at first, but honestly, you get over it. The only annoyance ive experienced is when jumping, if you turn around, you slow down mid air... aside from that, it feels fine to me.

Guess I never payed it much attention doesn't bother me much, I mean you can always get used to it?

We get used to a lot worse control schemes than this in other games, to be honest.

I think the movement is ok, what does bother me though is that I can't move the cursor with the laptop's trackpad when moving around in the game. Meaning I have to get my mouse if I want to get any good fighting movement going.

I understand that it's supposed to be harder at the start of the game, so it makes sense that walking backwards would be slower than walking forwards. Later in the game you unlock techs though, they help a lot with the movement, let's you configure how you'd like to move but at the cost of using energy.

I would suggest however that there could be a quick back-dash option without the use of any techs, to me it is a bit saddening that the backward movement is limited at being that slow until you get a tech. Hopefully the movement is worked on some more, but I don't really mind how it is.

Track pads are terrible on their own. They are not conducive to gaming at all.

You can use the dash tech to dash backwards already.

Yeah of course, because i did used to older track pad, but that is gone forever, because i getting used to wired mouse now.

Yeah I know, it takes a while to get the dash tech though.

To me, the fact that you can get used to it, or that allegedly other games are worse, doesn't make me want to resolutely defend it against all criticism.

The game is hardly "destroyed" for it, though. It may be needed to suggest a control scheme that doesn't require both the keyboard and mouse, though. Since Chucklefish will have to come up with it anyway for their console ports.

It would be easier to do a controller-only controls than a keyboard-only controls. I can't even imagine a mouse-only controls.

god help me if they even entertain the idea of a keyboard only control scheme.

The movement is fine, to me.

The goal of the game is to provide the feeling that you truly are some kind of intergalactic explorer, journeying across the stars and leaving your mark on the worlds you visit. The movement assists in that goal, with the mouse acting as your swiveling head and the rest of your body following along with it. If you've played the game for longer than an hour, odds are you've already gotten used to the movement system. Then again, odds are that most got used to it within the first thirty seconds of realizing it exists.

Slippery floaty controls don't assist in making me feel like an intergalactic explorer. The fact that you can "get used to it" doesn't mean it has to be preserved and protected.

No one is saying it does. It just doesn't need to change either. The controls are fine. They work and they achieve their desired effect.
