Me and some other lads were talking in a forum someone posted about getting rid of pickaxes and making the manner manipulator the "all purpose tool". I gave it some thought and decided an idea that could allow both the pickaxes and the MM to be used for those who want one or the other. So for one don't take pickaxes out, i think they could stay and work just fine, but perhaps the the matter manipulator could use the pickaxes, axes, etc that you made to upgrade itself(thus breaking the original weapon). Also, some aesthetic customization options with dyes and such. Well that is about it, just a little idea i had. Ohh, and also tell me what you think about the idea be it good or bad
I personally like to think of the matter manipulator as a sort of Swiss Army knife: you can use it for most anything, but it's the worst at everything it does. you can cut through bushes with your Swiss Army Knife, but you'd be better served with a machete. That said, it's really a matter of preference, so, putting that aside, the only reason not to do this would be programming time.

I was actually hoping that there was maybe a work bench or something in the game that already does that as a later tier upgraded bench.I mean if you can upgrade pickaxes from bronze to silver why not the manipulator. But if we can't, I agree with you, I mean I've only made a pickax so far in the game and I use that for everything other then farming. So for me the Swiss army knife feel isn't there for it. It just feels like a sweet gadget that should be greater than it should. plus: it's a scifi-sh game....so it would fit in if you could upgrade a tool that seems so high tech and not go back to pickaxe's, axes, and shovels.
For me I would love to have quite different experience when playing this game. I mean we are in space, visiting all this planets and whatnot. We have random strange monsters, trees and different races, yet we are collecting all that well known resources using good ol' pickaxe. At first I was suspecting that the Matter Manipulator will be "The Thing" in this game. I was hoping for some crazy tools that are made from unknown materials and all that good space stuff. I'm having fun with the game but I would loooove to experience a unique system for tools and materials.
The only reason I disagree with this is that the MM is used for alot more than digging, tbh it isn't supposed to be digging anyways. On the other hand, using a pick instead of some hightech tool does have a bit of lost potential. So just imo, but instead of changing the MM, why not just eventually have a high tech tool instead of a pick? Start with picks maybe, but eventually move up into bigger and better tools as your tech grows?
I suppose that would work too, i just feel that it is more convenient and such. Also the MM is a bit pointless once you get any axe, pickaxe, etc. You do make a good point though.
pointless for digging, yea, but it is also used (sort of) to place blocks and items and whatnot, which seems to be its true purpose while digging is only something it can do if it needs to, but its like using a hammer to dig dirt or cut down a tree, it is a building tool, but it sort of works if you try real hard That's just my opinion, though I do agree with your point on the fact we have this one nifty high tech tool and yet we still end up using picks...
