The matter manipulator breaks blocks really slowly.

Even dirt lol. Is there a way to upgrade it or something?

you go and make a crafting table, and construct tools.

each tool does a job more efficiently, pickaxes dig, axes cut down plants and trees, and hoes till dirt for growing plants.

Cooooooooool, thanks lol. Also how do I get wood if I start out on a planet with no trees?

Yeah, the matter manipulator is your most basic tool. Does just about everything, but doesn't do it well. Use your workbench to craft yourself a pick and an axe.

LOL! Can that actually happen? I'm assuming it has in your game since your asking. I'd just start a new character and world. That is seriously hilarious

Yeah I think people will miss that other tools are a bit more efficient.

Move out and dont stop running. U gonna found a tree :3

I feel like it's a little bit too slow though, it makes the start pretty boring.

I just made a pickaxe and that thing is FAST

I am not sure if this is in the game but it would be awesome if they would have "upgrades" for the manipulator just to be a bit more efficient, with a really high cost.

the correct tool makes a easy job :3!!

If u wanna cut wines or a tree, use a axe. Any mineral or stone, use a pickaxe

Any mosnter, SHOOT HIM AND DONT STOP !!! :sparta:

lol yup, I can confirm this can happen. I first game I started on a planet with large grassy plants which gave me planet fibres instead of wood. I am still playing that game and it's going really well. You just got to find some coal and fly off to another forest planet in the same system and hope luck is on your side xD.

It kinda doesn't really make any sense. Why do primitive tools work better than a high-tech piece of equipment?

Because the manipulator isn't designed to do that, specifically. It's a basic, general-purpose tool.

Try mining with a blowtorch in real life. Much more advanced tool than a pickaxe, but not really optimal for the job.

    Okay, yeah, that makes sense.

At least the next patch will speed up mining a bit!

I've got to say I'm a bit disappointed that there's no way to upgrade it. I was expecting us to have to use copper to upgrade it and then iron and silver and gold and so on so it could go faster, but instead we get the same pickaxe that we play with in other sanbox games like Minecraft and Terraria.

Was hoping with Starbound and it's galactic theme that we'd get to play with the tool that looks like the Dead Space gun.
