  6. Archer

Name being mentioned in the credits seems to fit into that context.

Perhaps a forum badge could be made for those users that have made mods that get implemented into the core game? (If that isn't there yet.)

I think I may have seen a forum badge that fits that description, but I'm not sure.

I mean I understand your concern, modders should definitely get some kind of recognition if their stuff gets implemented, but if anything monetary is going to do more harm than good then it's not going to be necessary, the recognition will be more than suffice (together with the competition stuff and such).

I'm a modder myself, I really only do it for fun since the game is so easy to mod, not to get rewarded for it.

I just fail to see how it would do any real harm to be perfectly honest. I have seen plenty of developers, both indie and big alike who have rewarded those who supported them. In regards to money making the community worse, well I still point toward's Valve.

And it's a good thing that you do it fun, you should never do an art work for the sole sake of money (but credit is very much nice). Sure there will be some that will exploit and try heavily profit, but those people are different, and not in the good way.

Not necessarily for the community though, that's just an excuse by the devs because nearly the same competitive effect (aka "making the community worse") is achieved through competitions, recognition, and so on.

I think it's the paperwork behind it for the team that is the main issue here.

About the competitions they are planning on doing... yea... that's something I didn't consider. It would make the community worse, wouldn't it?

I personally think it's just an excuse to soften the fact that they don't want to deal with the legal issues behind giving modders monetary rewards, not that I mind it that much, but they can at least outright say it then instead of talking around it (more drama...? Compared to the amount of drama that's usually on the forums already it really won't matter all that much).

It will not make the community worse in my eyes though, it will just make more people willing to mod, also people from the outside (people that usually don't use the forums but get attracted by the rewards for modding). This won't necessarily mean worse, it will just mean -more-.

Stuff like the mod stealing for instance is very easily countered as well... Perform a search and check dates before contacting? 5 Minutes of work at max. Earliest one gets picked out, unless the newer one elaborated enough on the idea to make it stand on its own legs.

Hmm... no, it's not. There are several big differences in what Chucklefish did compared to a non-indie company.

    1. Non-indie game companies usually won't ask their fan base to contribute money towards production
    2. If a Non-indie game companies does ask, they won't promise to use the funds in a particular manner

And no... pre-ordering GTA 5 from GameStop / EB games is not the same as pre-ordering Starbound from Chucklefish, because when you order GTA 5 from GameStop or EB games, you're essentially paying them so they can buy it for you when the time comes. The pre-order money does not go directly to the game company... it actually sits in GameStop's / EB Games' account making them loads of interest. This is why if GameStop or EB Games go bankrupt and you paid with cash... you're screwed.

Did I say specifically non-indie companies? Games are sold to make money. Making games takes money. Therefore, in order to have the money to make more games, game developers must gain profit from other games.

No, you said 'all game companies' which is worse than just saying 'all indie companies'. So I gave you the benefit of the doubt.

Not entirely accurate; however, I will agree that generally game companies need money to make games, but how they make that money and how they use that money is not universal.

As I said in my original post. I have no problems that they need multiple revenue streams. I have a problem with how they use one revenue stream which was promised to directly improve the development of a single title, Starbound, for non-Starbound related development. I don't care if they used the funds for an office... because a professional work environment can directly contribute to the improvement in development on Starbound; however, there is no way in any argument that using the Starbound revenue to hire more developers on a different title would.
