CF is hiring and supporting other developers right now. Chucklefish has published 5 other games so far, and is also working on their pirate game as well. I don't see any reason why CF can't even pay a tiny amount to the mod's creator whose mod made it into the game.

 

On one hand that would be nice, but on the other hand adding a money incentive to anything will cause a lot of craziness/drama that I can't really blame them for not wanting to deal with.

 

But they're throwing money at other indies...

 

Have you ever thought that just maybe the mod creator is not out for money from the start? That's kinda what the contract they accept to sign entails. You are not the voice of the opressed modders. Hell the Avali race maker has voiced his approval of the fair terms. the Avali. The most popular race mod. The guy in the best position to potentially want monetary gains if his mod were to ever be added.

 

Still bad, no matter how you cut it. If someone creates work that you use, that person should be entitled to something.

 

No it's not bad. Here's the thing. The maker is given A CHOICE. If he doesn't like the terms, his mod doesn't get added. Simple as that. No one is getting ripped off.

 

I've been given plenty of choices in my life... doesn't mean their all good, in fact most of them suck.

I think there's multiple viewpoints, and pretty much all of them are legitimate.

1) [mod author 01] did work, this work was integrated into the game, [mod author] should receive some compensation.
2) [mod author 02) did work that was very similar to [mod author 01], wonders why his mod was not chosen and why his work was "not worth money". Problems!
3) If Chucklefish does give out monetary rewards or shares/stock to mod authors, this could either be too much reward (if the game goes huge) or not enough reward (if it's a small, static amount or the game is not huge)

The end result is that turning mod making into a business is going to introduce all the problems with businesses, and this is assuming that it's even possible for Chucklefish to bypass EU tax laws and give money to non-EU citizens.

Something is better than nothing.

 

So why can't they throw just a little at the mod creator's who are essentially making free content for them?

If they can take all these gambles at other indies, why would just a morsel hurt for a modder?

 

A modder is much different from a game developer/a small team of game developers.

 

Because then suddenly mod making becomes a competition for money than something to do in your spare time because you feel like it.

 

I can assure you, from personal experience, that it is very difficult for businesses to work out compensation between EU and non-EU workplaces / citizens.

If you've ever filled out your taxes, now imagine that you have a W-2 from a different country, so now you need to read up on their tax laws, figure out how to report it, and see if you actually lost money from getting that 50 euro check. And don't forget about paying social security if you were in the US when you did the work. It's really messy =/

I understand that, in a vacuum, people should be rewarded for good work. But sometimes, laws and regulations can turn that reward into a punishment.

 

Tell that to the guys who made Team Fortress.

 

I seriously doubt that. Most mods don't make it into the game anyways, in fact most mods don't make it into most games at all. It will only become a competition if CF accepted almost every mod, and it's been pretty clear that they can be a bit picky in their tastes. And really though, if a modder was actively seeking out a large sum of money, they would more likely doing something else. From what I've learned about modders, a number of them do it for a few reasons, and one of the larger reasons is to the hope to be recognized for it. But if you just so happen to have your mod put into the vanilla of any game, you should be given something, for the work that you did. They are making money off of your work, so how is it unreasonable to be given something to compensate for it?

 

It started off as a mod, then Valve hired the mod makers and TF evolved into something bigger.

 

In fact the original team fortress was a FREE MOD

 

had read the entire reddit post and it was good reading but there is one question that elude us from something.. Tiy? will you ever going to port it to PS4 atfer the beta is finished or do you plan to release it pre-beta just like PC but start to add patches on the same time as PS4?
