The Hylotl and their "Peace"

    Hello guys! :D

Well, first off, i really like the Hylotl as a species but sometimes i dont really get them. I play as a Hylotl and when i talk to the Hylotl on my colony, they are all nice and loving but i switched to another character just to interact with them. Sometimes they are just totally jerks to other species, blaming the avian god as brutal and stuff or talking about why they cant fly, which is surely not something an avian wants to hear. As a glitch they are getting annoyed because of your clanking and they treat humans like they are idiots and of course, they hate the florans.

What i dont get is, in the lore they are depicted as peaceloving species that developed empathy through living on the ocean floor. First of all, i know they want peace but how are they thinking they are going to get peace if they are acting as if they are the glorious masterrace and all the other species are just uncultivated peasants. So... Whats the deal with their peace? Are they even thinking about what they are talking to other species?

I think that's kinda the point, they're supposed to be this peace loving civilization but they're really just Ignorant snobbish missionaries who want to "enlighten" the galaxy. The same sort of thing that happened with the native Americans and the Africans when the Europeans came in contact.

Thought Process- Hylotl sees floran settlement, primitive and violent, and wishes it was a peaceful, cultured one like his own.
Hylotl- "We must save you from your primitive ways"
    Floran- "Floran is happy though."
Hylotl- "Too bad, youre inferior culturally so you must listen and become peace loving!"
At this point the floran stabs the hylotl. This causing more hylotl to see florans and other races as violent and primitive, continuing the cycle.

    Ding Ding Ding! Right again!

I call them fish faces, even though I know they are actually amphibians. Hylotls are just a bunch of stupid [Strike]fishes[/Strike] that are too stupid to recognize their own hypocritisism.

"I will fight anyone who doesn't adopt pacifism!"
    - Random Hylotl townie

    Hylotls are my least favorite race for two reasons;
    1. They are [Strike] fishes [/Strike] amphibians. And I don't like water or things that live in the water. (Get that water stone away from me!)
    2. They are plain roode to to all other species and treat them like inferiors.
    "You look like a pig."
    - A different Hylotl townie
    "You look like a frog."
    - Hope Starite (That's my girl!)

Also, the fish faces lost their homeworld because they are too busy refusing to fight back. This makes their combat prowess worse than a shield, because at least you can smack someone with a shield (In other games).

to be fair they have every right to not like the florans at this point. i always wondered why other npcs think im judging them, but my hylotl only wants to free apex from big ape and the miniknog.

I actually play as a Hylotl except I do the opposite of what a normal Hylotl would do. That means I massacre villages and eat sweets and build Floran housings. That's pretty much a nightmare for Hylotls, except my character is still a snobbish arrogant fish.

Well in a way I guess you could call it blind faith, at least for certain hylotl npcs. Most are arrogant, but I don't think they are ignorant. More like stubborn in their way. It is like misinterpretation of what actually going on.

Since I play floran most of the time... Quite a few give some odd remarks, but some actually have something friendly to say. I have been in one of those hylotl island ocean world. I think only a couple were actually arrogant, while the rest were a bit more welcoming. One even remarked their own mistaken thoughts of floran.

Then again I am an odd floran, or am I. I am not as stabby as the notion would believe, and a thinker. As in philosophy and more liable to talk and strike, unless stricken first. Besides I love their architecture. Always for the hunt I am, but not quite always the same kind of hunt your average floran would be on; since I am a builder. I think you get the picture...:nuruawe:

I think Treeio Florstab should make a book called, "10 Reasons I Stab Hylotls".

Okay okay, I like hylotls more than florans for one reason, i prefer a jerk than a homocide. But I guess it's natural social balance, a society can't envolve in science and ethicsat the same level, one always needs to be a bit higher than the other one. I can summarizeHylotls in one word, Pride.

I haven't seen much lore in the hylotl, but from what I've seen, I've imagined a much more aggressive, not quite pacifist sort of race. Hylotl missionaries aren't like real world religious missionaries, but more like enforcers of their own views and ways of life. They still believe they spread peace. When they find individuals or societies who don't conform to their ideas of peace, then they use force to promote it.

I know florans conquered the hylotl home world at one point, but is there any reference that hylotl were completely passive during?

The Hylotl are almost exactly like the Tau from Warhammer 40K. Themed on the Japanese culture, and promote peace through conforming to their way of life.

So does that make the Florans the Orks?

    No, not really.

The Tau and Hylotl are almost identical in their cultural themes, and general behavior towards other races. Hylotl are a little more smug than the Tau, but their baisc coal is the same. Spread "peace" throughout the galaxy, and remove those that oppose.

The Orks and the Florans have fundamental differences that invalidate any link you may find between them. IE, Ork leadership is based entirly on "can you beat up your superior", and the fact that Ork technology is almost religious. They believe so greatly that their tech works, that it does... for them. Not to be confused with scrapping things together like the Floran ship, because the technology is still there.

The Ork technology works because the Old Ones made sure that they didn't have to use a soul for psychic powers, and given that the Old Ones were dealing with the Necrons and C'Tan who fed off of souls, the Orks had to use something that wouldn't leave them vulnerable, hence the kind of gestalt ability that made them think that if something worked, it would. It used to be bad enough in older editions that you could hand them a simple Choppa with a hole in the handle and tell them it could shoot stuff and they'd believe it so much that it would, later editions placed sensible restrictions so as not to be too goofy.

It is demonstrated that game mechanics and fluff have little relevance together. Unless I am misunderstanding something. I feel I am.

No, you're pretty much right in that respect. The fluff and mechanics don't always mesh, especially when it's time to write up a new codex.

... you... do realize I was just having fun with this, right? Making silly comparisons? Maybe I'm just easily amused but I had a mental image of Florans riding a junker of a vehicle (painted red, of course) into battle screaming "WAAAAAAAAGH" and wanted to share it.

Sorry, things like that go over my head quite easily.

Painted red, naturally. Do the Orks know any other color?
