The Gate can now be rare.

In the coming update, teleporters have increased functionality that allow you to bookmark planets, and more importantly, the Outpost. Before we got this (very useful) function, there had to be a Gate in every system so we could easily get back to the Outpost. It didn't really make sense for this eldritch technological marvel to be a dime a dozen, so what I'm thinking is that they should either only appear in your starter system, or be very rare. (And still appear in your starter system.) Simply add in a quest to add the Outpost to your teleporter bookmarks before the player has access to FTL tech, and there would be no possibility of losing it, either. It's just a little immersion-breaking to have an identical gate in every system in the entire universe, so let's fix it!

I like this idea too, but if you have played the game in unstable recently, you would notice there is a mission ark that's accessible from the gate so a remote teleporter would be needed there too.

    good idea, quite logic, t-up

    I totally agree with you!
The Gate just has to be in the first solar system of a new player, so he can link the Outpost's teleporter to his ship's teleporter.
There can be another Gates in other Solar System, but not in every systems, I think it might be more logic.
And for the Ark, we could just search a door, it's not a problem if we can't find an Ark's Gate in every System, I think.

Well, the only issue with that is it gives a possibility of getting stuck. Let's look at a worst-case scenario: You're in a system without a gate. You didn't bookmark the outpost teleporter for some reason, only ever using gates themselves to get to the outpost. The moon in that system has been sucked dry. This means you have NO WAY WHATSOEVER of getting fuel, and you're stuck in that system forever. The way the game works now, it's impossible to get stuck, with Infinity Express providing an inexhaustible supply of fuel. Removing gates from some systems would remove the immunity the player has to getting stuck, which would be a game-breaking situation.

Also, in response to Nekobi, the game is actually incapable of just having a gate in the first system. In Starbound, you actually have one universe per-game, with all your characters sharing the same one, just spawned astronomically far away from each other to give the illusion of isolation. Every character you create is randomly popped in to a location, always above a Harmless, lush planet in orbit around a Gentle Star. There is no one "first solar system" to be indicated. So yes, if they did reduce the number of gates (which is still a bad idea), it would be logical to only put them around Gentle Stars.

Oh, one last thing, I have no idea how the whole six keys thing in the Ark is going to work, but there's a slight chance that completing the second last mission whilst in a system without a gate might be problematic (it seems like the player is going to fly their ship through the Monolith Gate, according to the to-do). But that's purely speculation.

Well , you're right, I forget this detail...

And for the problem for being stuck, you could just force the player to link the teleporters, like with a mission and the only possibility to return to the ship by teleporter, but that's becoming too complicated...

After-edit: I maybe find a solution, like some "refuel-station" in the solar system, or spaceships... That can be more logical and useful for refueling easily.

Yeah... Adding something akin to a mission listing that leads to the outpost would be nice.

I would absolutely love an Infinity Express planet type to be added. I always felt that the outpost's Infinity Express always felt too much like an object, so having an actual structure, and moreover an actual "planet", would be awesome. It's also a much more sensible thing to find normally than Precursor gates (perhaps the spawn algorithm could be modified to require a gate in the system, since finding a gate in every gentle system still seems a bit odd), and would make the universe feel much more inhabited and even alive, which is a feeling it's sorely lacking in at the moment. (you'd think that planets with colonies would have more colony and less wilderness)

I'd love so much to have an infinity express in space!
This would be more logic to my mind.

This could be like a little space station with shops, and a refueling ship area. Maybe with some pilots and crew drinking in a bar (I have a lot a imagination sometime), where you can buy some fuel, and walk in the station, buy some things, talk to people..., while your ship is refueling, for example.

After-edit again: I'll make a suggestion post of this idea, this really have to be in Starbound!

Well... now it's sounding a bit too much like an outpost. The outpost could contain a wider variety of shops and a lot more people, while the Infinity Express just sells what it normally does (fuel, healing items, etc.) and might have another customer or two there (it'd be cool to see other ships hanging around it, but that sounds like something for a later addition), like an actual gas/petrol station would. What you're saying reminds me of how I imagined the outpost before it was added.

Yeah, I think too much indeed xD

Well, that's because I was thinking about more bigger Outposts than those in the game for now...

Just a refueling station is good, i'll make the suggestion of this later.

Thanks for the feedback! I actually did say that there should be a quest to link the gate to your teleporter bookmarks before you can access the FTL drive, so you couldn't lose the gate. Also, unless it's been changed in the latest unstable, all characters start on the same planet if you have multiples. Just give the Gate a very small chance of spawning in any sort of system, and add "has gate" to the checklist of things that the game needs to start a char on. Boom, problems solved.
