Honestly, this is exactly what I'd been hoping for from the beginning.

This is a great idea but since it is such a big idea I would settle for the all or nothing option you hinted at. A Peaceful planet with bunnies and then a planet where every creature you see will try to kill you.

Also if you have time, a Neutron star where you need powered armor to mine neutronium in order to fuel the world builder.

this is legit, i think there should be way more random events, and also there should be drastic racial passives

This sounds amazing in so many ways. I would suggest, however, studying SB's game files in-depth and working on a proof-of-concept mod with these features (an idea is great, but a demo is better) that you can pitch to the devs (a few of Minecraft's features, for example, originate from POC mods that the devs liked enough to incorporate into the base game). I say this because it sounds like you have a very detailed, precise outline of what you want this to be, and a mod would give the devs and the SB community at large something tangible to evaluate; more than likely, it would at least be extremely popular, if not, in part or in full, added or adapted to vanilla SB.

Yup, the developers ought to read this thread and hopefully are already thinking along the same lines. Diverse environments would mean more than palette swaps. And I do support having the different racial abilities, both for singleplayer and multiplayer. "You with the feathers, take this armor so we have somebody not lumbering around in a flimsy Rebel Trooper outfit!" Or, "Don't worry, guys, I brought enough currentcorn seeds to grow food for everyone! You like battery acid, right?" (Really more like, "You eat the meat on this planet because I'm the only one that can grow edible crops here.")

My own comments are that (1) there should be some warning before meteors and any other insta-kill hazard, and (2) I'd like some way to warp back to a chosen "home" for little or no fuel cost, to encourage me to build an actual base instead of the empty shacks I've been building.

I agree that this is exactly what I envisioned the finished starbound to look like.I second the Dwarf Fortress shout out, sometimes you want a place that is peaceful and rains beer from the sky, while others you want the satisfaction in knowing that you just colonized hell because you can. I think it was mentioned on previous pages, but I would be interested in breathe-ability as another hazard/boon, possibilities for racial divergence here. Massive vegetation could produce a high oxygen environment, which is nice for breathing, until something catches fire.

As for racial abilities, I know many don't like it, but I am in favor, maybe not in a this one is better at mining and this one can carry more, but in a this one can survive better in x environment, or eating that wont hurt me but I shouldn't offer it to Jim over there (sounds like this is planned anyways, with the food descriptions as they are now). I understand it is the intent to make each race equal to the each other, but how would you feel about a Master of Orion setup?
Each race would have their sweet spot range of environments, and any deficits can be overcome by player crafted machinery. Every race is capable of making them, and every race will have places that they will need it on, so you would still be equal.
Planet is toxic? Build a filtration system to normalize a chunk of the planet, a bubble if you will, or if possible to code, produces a sort of mostly invisible bizaaro 'liquid' that fills up your base/enclosed area and lets you breathe, don't forget to shut the door.
Planet is next to a neutron star beaming down radiation? How about a radiation shield?
Bit too heavy for you to move and afraid the slightest trip will splatter you? Sacrificing armor for an exo harness sci fi doohickey could work, or build an Anti grav field generator and free up that slot.

You might say, I don't want to build a city just to be here for a few minutes man! Just visiting? Use equipment at the sacrifice of something else, like the warmth gear now in game, planning for a long haul? bring or build the machinery. This would also give a great use to the wiring system and provide an interesting base vs base pvp aspect I think, make it to their base, shut off their life support, and smoke em out :p.

These are a few examples of what could happen, if not in the main game it would make a great mod. Again, all races would be functionally the same, but the planets are what really influence your choice to land.

Neutron stars are so crazydense that even the nigh limitless technology of Starbounds different species would crumble like a stale scone. Neutron stars crumple dreams and imagination.
I'm all for racials, so are a lot of other people. a shame the devs are so fervently opposed.

almost want to ask what's the point in having races at all? might as well simply consolidate the the races cosmetic options into one and let players make whatever 'species' they can imagine.

Is this in the community suggestions list to upvote? I checked back around 200 entries and I couldn't find it...

And I agree with spacehobo, the racials would give a reason to choose different races beyond cosmetics. I don't think the racials should be anything spectacular, but that little bit of flavor can do a lot more than you'd think.

Yes, yes, yes, and even more. There is so much one could expand upon here and you've done a fantastic job. Personally I want to see planets with double and even multiple biomes.
Guess I should have looked first, my thread is similar to this own but far less detailed and a whole lot sloppier.
Stay on the ball, Meyjer, this is brilliant!

This is great stuff. I am absolutely hating the rigidity of the game right now. Everything is way too defined and makes for a game about just progression rather than exploration.

I suggest also tying loot RNG bonuses to your hazard system. Risk reward type deal.

Also, each time you find a certain mineral on a planet, it should be noted in some sort of log that said mineral exists there. This kind of forces exploration of a planet rather than just saying "oh this planet only goes up to iron. SKIP!"

I guess this type of log should exist for all aspects of a planet. Monster discovery, town or dungeon discovery, so on.

I agree SO much with the original post! That is a Starbound that I could see having thousands of hours of playtime as opposed to a few hundred (per person). In addition I would like easy "alpha sector" planets and difficult "gamma sector" planets to be side be side. Difficulty integrated within the solar systems and sectors. I really dislike the idea of the sector "tiers" because as soon as you're able to leave one, there is absolutely no incentive to return. There are an abundance of places to explore in a single sector that I almost feel like they're unnecessary, but if they were kept, they could just serve as additional star maps to explore with equally diverse planets (in difficulty and layout).

    Please make this a reality!

Agreed, the different tiered planets should be side to side making it possible to have eventually explored an entire constellation or have a "home constellation." One easy way to do this is having higher tiered solar systems be centered around larger/hotter stars and needed items such as the molten core to create protection for your ship to enter the system. I know this doesn't make a lot of scientific sense but it makes more sense to me than x galaxy has all solar systems of this difficulty, etc.
