I think this idea is great, mostly I want more planet diversity. right now its: this planet is cold, this one isnt, this one is very cold and you will learn of robots on it. I would like planets like: this is toxic but has many diamondz and thats what this suggestion is, makes planets more diverse I also want to see more creature attack diversity, I already know exactly how to counter the basic attacks (jump over charge and charge under body slam, a bit of irony there) I want to take a barren, toxic, evil, inhabitable planet with blood thirsty (literally) monsters, and turn it into a paradise with friendly animals that you can tame or eat.. that would be a real accomplishment. thats something I would actually work towards
Well... Right now you can't get scanners, so "threat level" is all the info you get. Ideally that'd be phased out and you'd have the details of "Apex activity", "toxic air" and "meteor showers" (and "nasty creepy flesh biome" =p ) for making your own judgment.
Planet biome should definitely have some; -Water planets (or ice with water undernearth) maybe some land -asteroids or large rocks which can be in near planet orbit and be accessed once the ship is in orbit of a planet, a suit would be required, a door would allow to exit your ship and fly around the planet seeing things like military weapons, satellites, ships, asteroids and whatever
Great post ! I approve most of the ideas ! Here's some stuff I've posted about that, it's quite the same ideas, with less details. About the map UI: About Hazards:
These ideas are genius. I would love to see something really similar in the game. There are some things i and sure the developers would want to tweak a bit if they would put these in the game but the basic ideas are perfect and i guess everybody would love to see this system become a bit more realistic with this.. Also i suggest some sort of planet log where you can store your personal foundings about the planet.
The problem with the game is that its current idea of "diversity" is simply putting a bunch of premade assets (admittedly in "different colors") and mashing them together in various ways. That's not very interesting. What WOULD be interesting would be to have more assets (like how trees are done, which seem to be made from different parts) be constructed "on top" of each other, instead of next to each other. By which I mean have certain characteristics of things like buildings be more subject to additional properties added to them, and have properties added to those properties. Hell, make images themselves procedurally generated. And intelligently make what gets generated become associated with the structure of, say, the dungeons and buildings resulting from these things. There needs to be a level cohesion between everything. The ultimate goal is making every world look hand-crafted without having them actually be hand-crafted. You can't do that by throwing a bunch of random variables that don't affect each other at all. The big issue is figuring out how to assign values to variables without getting that same sick feeling of premade assets falsely passed off as "procedurally generated". Another thing is that people argue that putting constraints on what generation systems are allowed to combine would hurt variety. The opposite hurts it. With the current system of generation, you're really given a bunch of planets that all look and feel the same by basically giving everything the same weighted probability, and that's awful. Thinking about it, isn't the result of that basically gaussian noise? There needs to be something done about the procedural generation, because what currently exists just doesn't cut it to give compelling, unique differences between planets. And for the love of god please do not reduce your response to "hurr durr it's a beta excuse every single flaw and don't give any feedback whatsoever." I'll admit though; I totally understand if what I'm saying sounds paradoxical and impossible. I totally understand that.
Brilliant as similar other threats that really would turn the game into what we all envisioned ;-) +1
I agree completely! As it stands right now there is a huge lack of actual diversity between planets from what it could be. I would love to see something along these lines. It doesn't make any sense every planet would have monsters (especially some of the moons) and just be hot or cold. Tiered planets all being of threat level X for Tier X is also disheartening. Great ideas!
Lurker as well, but I just have to chime in to give some support to this post. If something like this is already planned; great! If not, I dearly hope it becomes something planned! Environmental hazards of all kinds would add so much personality to planets, and so much diversity to the game itself. I'm sure I'm mostly just repeating things said by others already, but planet diversity really is something that I feel like it could be improved upon. One thing that comes to mind though, is there any benefit at all to visit higher gravity planets? As the suggestions look right now, I would probably just avoid them like the plague. Considering the vast amount of other planets, that might not be too much of an issue, at least. Still, might be something to consider. The gravity debuffs are reeeally big.
I like this idea too. Does anyone know a good way to make chucklefish aware of this thread? Any ideas?
Hi First post ever on the forums. and I would like to say, this does not help. I personally quite liked the ideas outlined in this thread, and if you don't I can understand that; I'm an understanding guy. but it would be absolutely, positively awesome if you could explain why. Why don't you like this idea. What's wrong with it in your opinion. telling the OP why helps them to refine their idea, to take into consideration the very same feedback that chucklefish is using this beta for. Now, onto my thoughts on this system, I like it. Granted it may be a little convoluted (on the fence at how complex i'd like any system in game to be), but it's got no lack of good ideas on how to diversify planet generation, how to incentivise exploration (finding a planet that's safe and rich, a goldmine, maybe even quite literally). in my playthroughs of the beta on a server, my friends and I have been trying for the longest time to make a base on a planet where A. It could be safe, and B. There was a reason to be there. so far, our bases have been on forests and grasslands, only trodding on the soil snow of a snow planet to explore for instruments (despite my desire for a snow base, there's No point). In short, I like this idea a lot. I believe it would help further differentiate planets and give purpose to those cold desolate piles of rock, for more than just building a base there Because you can. Thanks for reading.
I hope they see this thread and think about doing some radical changes, because at the moment I cant see this game getting close to Terraria's quality.
I'm not sure that kind of pessimistic mindset is a good one for taking part in betas. Anyway, put me on the pile of people liking the OP's ideas.
With a little refinement here and there(Numbers and details, mostly, so I am not getting into that), the OP's suggestion would give this game the fantastical experience I'm looking for. Thanks for fleshing out my favorite suggest I have personally seen yet.
