I'm in agreement here... Though realistically it could be a lot bigger of a project than most people think... depending of course on how many biomes and how many planets backgrounds and different planet life (obviously alien ambient creatures/plants). If picked up I don't think this would make it into action for a while.
GUESS WHO DIDN'T THINK THIS THREAD WAS GOING TO BE ABOUT WHAT IT'S ABOUT? Me. also that stuff you said would be nice
I like this, animations ranging from slow and subtle to pretty active though not overpowering going on in the background. Sometimes like water droplets in caves, might interact with and fall on the player. I have played many games that had this attention to detail, Castlevania:SotN does this pretty well, Skyrim failed at this to me. There are many games that forget just how long or how often the player might pause or not move for a while, and making this not seem so static adds something to the world. One of the thing that really stood out to me in SotN was how it tackled perspective, certain background layers moved slower than others, allowing for the giant monster eye to peek through the window,.
I saw this before when it was first posted. It reminds me of the Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time, which went overkill on the flying bugs. As long as they don't go too far, the movement would help draw attention away from the character and into the background. It would add depth to the visuals, at the risk of being distracting.
Danfus, Great idea! Most games are like how you said "too clean". This is why Starbound can be more diverse from other games. Its the subtle changes that make alot of difference!
Just a note, they do have wind which makes the trees sway, and other weather effects. I know this isn't the same as what you're suggesting, just wanted it known as a few people didn't know there was going to be light breezes. That being said...UPVOTED!
You know what? The underground areas that aren't effected by wind need something like this, too. In Super Metroid, upon first entering Crateria you find harmless bugs that scatter when you get close... They'd basically be like the fish in underwater areas, only underground.
It would be cool if these additional effects were optional in settings. I know they are trying to keep this optimized for even pretty simple laptops. It would be a tremendous addition for those of us with sturdier machines though! Upvote for sure.
This. Is a fantastic idea. All the images and video I've seen of Starbound's environments so far seemed lacking a tiny something, and this is what it was! aah I hope the dev.s consider adding something like this (even if it feels like it could be a weighty project in the long run). Imho it would also be really cool if you could interact with some of these particles i.e. when jumping, landing or sprinting on sand or if it's leaves they'd flutter up or something similar.
