At least we know one for sure - game is not done yet and it won't be anytime soon.

    Wanderlust multiplayer anyone?

As much of an asshat as he is, he did make valid points. The more you hype people up for something with "expected" release dates, and then push it back more and more, it gets old really quick.
Suggestion would be to stop giving us estimates, work on the game, and then drop the bomb (so to speak) when you are positive that the game is released in a week.
I'm fairly sure that all the hype will come rushing back in that time length.

Or they could develop this "dream game" for 5 years and we're going to have another Duke Nukem on our hands.

(I'm still hyped for the game, but I can at least distract myself with League and Mods.)

They gave estimates because people kept asking for estimates..

If they didn't knew - why gave not realistic estimates?

When I ask you how it will be "Let's be patient guys!" in klingon, will you tell me "I don't know", or you will just mumble something to just get rid of me?

They should tell us "we don't know. we are doing our best to make this game great - so give us time". No, they still pushing estimate release time - that is not cool I think.

Because Tiy is nice and thought that - since people were asking - the people might like a release estimate.

He changed his mind though because people started sending him things like death threats because he didn't meet the estimates.

Edit: Also, yeah, at the time they made it, their estimate was realistic. As they've said though, things have turned out to take longer than they expected.

... the "pre-order beta" is almost ready, right? Like three months away or maybe less?

Starbound is finished as long as you believe it is...
then you have to wait a few months to play an already finished game.

After failing to hit the late 2012 release date, I think that's the new plan.

DNF was a vaporware legend because it wasn't actually in development for most of those 13-15 years; only when the team had time to work on it instead of their other obligations.
3D Realms released teasers and tastes to the public about once every 2-4 years, and it became quite clear from those teasers that they were restarting and rebooting the game every time in the interim.

In comparison with Starbound, we've had frequent content demos and public interactions with the developers, all over the course of the last year. (I haven't kept count, but I'm pretty sure if you added it all up it'd total well over 2 dozen interactions at this point, easily.)
Does that honestly suggest "vaporware"? Or that the game is suspended in some permanent hiatus?

Apart from the estimated release dates (which I have found foolish and baffling) Tiy and his team have been VERY open and honest with us.

If the game is not ready, I doubt the beta is ready. Think fifthteen months away. All your going to get from here to there is some screen shots and an echo chamber of a forum.

I'm bloody sleepy, and against my better judgement I shall post what I think this will give you guys a good estimate.

First, take up game programming if you have not already, then if you're feeling lucky, look for other guys to join your game making group, the more programmers the faster the development should go.
Second, create a simple platform game backbone, then look at the list of information available, pick one of the simple or easier features shown and try to implement it into your game. Note the time taken and you may have a rough idea when you may finish it.
Thirdly, continue implementing and testing your features. You may stumble upon difficulties while making the game but do not give up until you start scolding the computer screen for giving you such a hard time.
Fourth, you may start noticing it may not be possible to achieve the set goals given the time used to create the selected features, so a slight delay may be inevitable.
Then, your game estimate may start looking a little silly and may need to reconsider the time needed to implement, test and ensure features work with one another. Current set date may or may not be achievable. There are a lot of factors, but hopefully all are still manageable.

Of course, I may be entirely wrong with this and you/your team could come up with the game in mere months. I look forward to seeing your own custom made Starbound-ish game should that be the case. If you are doing this you'd probably be to distracted to notice until the release of the game, in which it would seem like no time at all, coupled with you gaining programming knowledge! Win-win for all!

    Ouch, my heart..

I think at this point it would be best for me to try to forget about the game and come back in like 8 months. I find myself checking this forum every 2 hours, and before I leave for work in the mornings. Lol

If it's not anywhere near finished, screenshots and 4 min gameplay vids will only make the wait even more unbearable.
