I can't wait to see the upcoming (and stable) versions of starbound!
Not only because I don't want to keep making new characters... Definitely not the only reason. ;)

We're still very early in Stage 1 Beta. There are A LOT of features that have yet to be implemented, and quests are one of them. They'll get here eventually.

This covers... basically all issues I've had with Starbound so far, and then a bunch more. It's really good to know that you guys know these problems are here, and intend to address them. Keep it up!

    That article was really interesting.

But I think what lacks in Starbound is the amount of procedural 'variable' :

Most planets have the same terrain: Flat, steep (boring) hills, small dolmen-like structures, small cliffs, ponds.

Adding variables such as Huge Cliffs, Large overhangs, small and large lakes, plateaus, craters, huge underground caves, waterfalls, pillars, etc.
would add a lot of variation to the planets.

Add to that dungeons and structures that are built right in the side of a cliff, on top of a huge mountain, underwater, villages built upwards (instead of only linear), villages built in caves, 2 enemy villages built one next to the other (with some NPCs fighting each other), ruins (a lot of them), crashed NPC spaceships (good for scavenging), hordes of creatures attacking a settlement, etc.

Most of these are easy to make, and would brig a lot of variation to the planets, especially you make the dungeons more 'random', so that 2 similar structures are way different inside.

i think, rather than a shortkey for switch tech slot, maybe one hotkey by tech slot will be better, end of priority problem for active tech.

In truth that is one of the reasons the bosses in Terraria could pass through walls, even when some did not make sense to do so. I think that the current path of giving bosses block break attacks to use when trapped is a step in the right direction though, the penguin used to get trapped easily but now it halfway unsticks itself, with a few minor bugs still of course. I truly do look forward to the new creature mechanics that were mentioned though, I believe a dev mentioned things like enemies with certain body parts gaining new abilities, such as wall climbing enemies, flaming enemies, toxic enemies, and ai that shifts depending on what abilities and parts the enemy has. Though I do hope they expand the buffs/debuffs so there can be a greater variety of enemy types. Toxic, burning, freezing, energy burn(energy drain), slow, blind, a lot of basic rpg status effects that can be expanded to fill in the void in current combat mechanics.

And by reverse I would like to see weapons that can utilize them as well. One thing I would love to see would be a separate set of guns that use projectile rounds for the purpose of letting the player make/buy rounds with different effects or strengths. To use those buffs/debuffs against enemies, or add buffs to friends, you get the idea~ (The need for bullets though is more for the sake of effect selection, unless one could work the mechanic into energy weapons, but a new branch of the gun tree would shake things up a bit.)

Hey it did not stop Terraria from having phaseblades and phasesabers.

On the subject of bosses, I think they should still have collision with blocks, but have specific block breaking attacks if they're trapped, so the trapping is temporary. Either that or give them projectile attacks that pass through walls, so trapping them doesn't give you an automatic win.

I agree, I was just using Terraria as an example since it used the bosses pass through blocks method for all but a couple bosses. I think Starbound needs bosses that have collisions, unless the boss is a worm or other entity that has an excuse.

Yeah, I know the penguin boss has a block smash attack that was added for that purpose, the problem is though it only works with blocks beneath him currently, so an attack for upward blocks is needed also. The robot I have not tried, but imagine should punch or laser through blocks, or teleport perhaps. The dragon's AI is not yet complete so I can't say for sure how it will work, the jelly I think needs work as trapping the pieces worked as an easy kill on it.

Speak for yourself you impatient cretin.

People like you shouldn't participate in a Beta if you want a full game.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure the developers just finished everything, coding is such a piece of cake. They just don't implement it to make you angry.

For me there is no future with starbound if they didn´t get the performance problems fixed. We are 7 people who bought the game and played few days. But the performance is still horrible. We have no problem with character wipes or deleted universes, but the framedrops all the way stopped us playing starbound. We went back to terraria.

In my opinion they have to fix this first before implementing new things.

I think that depends a lot on your OS and hardware. I am running a fairly low end laptop and Starbound is running fine. Code optimization focus is not until later though I believe. I do lag quite a bit when rain or such is active though so if the same is true for others then adding an option to toggle weather particles might enhance performance.

I'd be happy if 98% of all caves/holes in the ground didn't end 20 blocks down in a pool of water - effectively stopping your tunneling.

No, it depends on the game starbound. Even buggie games like BF4 in beta phase running lot better. I only have midrange PC (i7 4770k @ 4.5G and GTX580 SLI with 16GB RAM) but the game is not able to use the Nvidia GPU even if I force to use the right gpu. No matter if one or 2 GPU´s installed. It´s just using the Intel GPU build in the processor. Even makes it no difference if I playing single Player or Multiplayer. I can connect to Linux or Windows Server (we own both) still the same problem.

My X61 Laptop with GM965 is running fine with 1024x768 resolution. Both computer running Win 7 64 bit. All my friends have rigs like me and all have the same problems. No matter which server or world we are playing. Only one player has no problems, he is using AMD CPU with ATI GPU. But there is no other game we can not play with 45 or more frame with suitable settings. So it´s really no pc or os problem.

I know it´s a beta but I can´t help the devs if the game is so slow cause it´s boring to play.

Edit: Another thing that says me it´s the game and not the pc/os. 2 Updates before it was running fine!
