Does anyone know how get in to admin mode? (On starbound) (If you can't that's ok, I was just wondering)
It says "The Future of starbound" no one really knows when the future could be, It could be three weeks from now. idk (I think you mean 'when is the new update coming')
Currently I'm hosting a server that around 20 others from around the world log into and play. Anyways... On the host computer: Press WINKEY+R (Windows Key + R) and type CMD in the "Run..." Window that appears. Once in the command prompt type "ipconfig" (no quotes), this will give you your LOCAL IP address (Look for IPv4). Anyone INTERNALLY on your network (i.e. on the same router) should be able to connect without an issue. No ports to forward or fancy VPN software required. If no one can connect, I'd imagine it's either Windows Firewall or an anti-virus program that's blocking the connection. Now if your talking about your friend that lives across town (or the country) this is where things can get a bit dicey if you don't have much IT experience. Basically it's going to involve getting into your router and Port Forwarding your LOCAL IP address. Your EXTERNAL IP address is what you'll want to give your friends to connect. http://whatsmyip.org/ is a good website to check it. Note: this IP will be vastly different to what you'll be connecting to. Reference: http://portforward.com/ Has a huge list of just about every router/DSL modem out there and a ways to get into the router and how to configure it for port forwarding. For instance if you were to host, you would be connecting to a 127.0.0.1 address (known as a loopback address). Your friends will be connecting to whatever whatsmyip.org revealed to you (ex. 72.125.64.12). Note: normally (unless specified to your ISP i.e. static IP) your EXTERNAL IP address may change on a regular basis. Sometimes it's once every couple of months, sometime it's just once a year. Let me know if you want some more info, a PM would probably be a better alternative then troubleshooting it here in this thread.
this is not the next update, it's the future, maybe one maybe one thousand of update will be necessary to achieve that, look at that todo list, it's soooooo huge.... but i hope the next is the fix of the charactere update, with no more erase.
Not quite there! I meant like, map creation (custom maps). So we can create our own maps, much like Tedit on Terraria. If you're still not sure what I mean, read the thingy (thread) that I made, just check my page and you'll find it somewhere.
My major concern is when the next character/world reset is going to happen. Most of my Starbound buddies are watching for news of the next time they're going to have to restart the entire game. It's disconcerting to continue playing the current game if you don't know when the entire thing's going to be destroyed. Most of them have already stopped playing, pending this event, and some of them have stopped playing altogether, moving on to other games. There needs to be an announcement regarding this issue soon, or else I'm going to lose all of my reasons to play this game.
Wish there was some sort of information as to why the game has suddenly stopped working on Macs, a fair few people seem to no longer be able to play.
Oh, well I can't say I have tried it with Windows 8 but I can say the multiplayer is functioning for some of us. My friend and I use Windows 7 though. Oh I understand now, sorry I thought you meant like an in game map for seeing the landscape. Like the Item "Map" in Minecraft. I see what you mean though, and yeah that would be wonderful to do. I love making adventure maps and the like and being able to do so in a user friendly creative environment would make the task very nice.
If you don't feel comfortable with the concept of an early beta (thus wipes and stuff changing rapidly) then I suggest you and your friends wait a while until we get into stage 2 or 3 of this beta. Stage 1 is meant primarily for testing and bug fixing, thus your characters and worlds might always be at risk of deletion. Stage 2 and above should be much more stable for gaming!
In a lot of ways Stage 1 of the beta is really the borderline between alpha and beta stages, it is far enough to have alot of working content but enough stuff is still broken or not implemented that by alot of standards Starbound is still late alpha, but that is giving us all the chance to really be involved with its development on a larger scale than if they waited and started the beta at stage 2 or 3 like many games do. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of the game's early beta development. The price for this being that data wipes and restarts are commonplace but on the other hand restarting is recommended to ensure you are able to test all the changes each time anyway. I miss my old characters too yes, but in my mind they are still off exploring while new explorers take their place and test new versions.
I think that the major factor that I'd like to see changed is a way to save or even replay the older, out-of-date worlds and characters. Sure, it's just for nostalgia, but there's an unusually sizable portion of any game's demographic that enjoys keeping the nostalgia going. This is especially true in sandbox/building games where many players have emotionally invested themselves, mostly unconsciously, in a chia-pet-like manner to their creations. I, personally, won't have the time to replay the old saves, but I still keep things like old Minecraft worlds on my HDD just as a souvenir of the memories I had in them. I suppose the effect is the same as when you go on vacation. There may be some people who decry those who carry mementos of their time at the vacation spot as excessively attached to an event that was too ephemeral to make a real difference in their lives, but you can't deny the desire of those who wish to take photos and other reminders of their vacations.
Yeah I can greatly sympathize with that. I do the same myself with Minecraft, even keeping older versions of the entire game around just in case I ever wanted to play them. The things I built, or worlds seen are not things one wants to just cast away, and it would be wonderful if there was a legacy-mode of sorts. The problem with having built-in to the game though is that it would require extra storage space for Starbound to keep all old versions of itself to allow you to load the needed assets for older saves. I do agree with you though that it would be a wonderful thing to see~ I suppose it could be done as an optional feature also for those wanting to save space.
I'll give this a shot. Currently, Ham and cheese screws up with my friend's computer internet connection for some reason. Maybe this'll solve the problem. Thanks for the recommendation!
