Yes, it has been out for three weeks, but let us not forget the many estimated release dates that have been made prior to the Beta's release. If this game had been released on any of those previous release dates, think about how this game would have been. I mean, in this current game's state, it would have been unplayable back then, and yet they had estimated not just a beta release date, but a full game release date earlier.

Yes the beta has been out for three weeks. But the game has been in development for several years. I would have expected a much greater amount of content given the amount of time spent in development, the number of delays, and the promises made by the devs for a playable beta by the end of the year. This doesn't feel like a beta to me, and it feels as if not much has been done to implement the many things they have often talked about. Again, we can predict that these things will be fixed, and content will increase based on the words of the developers, but this has yet to be seen.

I totally agree with you we still dont really know what starbound is going to be in the future we can only help developers by giving them our great ideas and hope they are going to add them.

You realize that there were, like, one person for every field (programmer, sprite maker, etc.) besides music composers until they started their fundraiser or very shortly before, right? People complain that the game has been in development for years but that's because only a VERY small team was working on it. This isn't Halo or God of War, this is an indie-developed game with much more planned content than either of the aforementioned games. Gives these guys a break. They have lives, and they have jobs. A lot of their content hasn't even been coded yet but you guys still want the game fully released before you go to bed.

I have been a software developer since I was 17 (about 16 years now) and ~90% of my software is under the Freeware license and can say that regardless whether or not you have/or are being paid to develop the common public will always try to rush things well before their time. You and I both know that coding a game is difficult (I even work for a professional gaming company now) and the company I work for has some 400+ developers who will work on a single game, each member taking a specific routine and then after it is all done, a group manager will tie those routines into the main game/application class. However, this is not a billion dollar a year franchise, it is as you said an Indie game developer < 10 software programmers to do tens of thousands of lines of coding. To the OP, the developers could easily just seal all of the bugs and release the game in its current state, and you still would have gotten what you paid for (though it would lack the quantity which you speak of), but instead they have chosen to expand upon their original platform and make it more extensive, to add new features and elements; and for that I applaud the developers. We can clearly see that this game is shaping up to be a fine game indeed, sure it might be rough around the edges and lack a few options here and there, but all great works of arts demand time, attention and a patient public, after all it took over four years to paint the Sistine Chapel and there were no complicated algorithms involved. Have a cup of tea and just know that someday soon, this project will be marked completed and we will all have been part of something special.

Thank you for such a beautiful game. I play it and get great pleasure. Fire, a chair and listening to the rain. At this moment I enjoy the growth of the seed. awesome. starbound is first of all an adventure, the search for novelty. It is worth to spend time on it! I am pleased. (from Russia)

The Christmas stuff looks quite good!

    Though curiosity piques me, how much knowledge do the non-human races have with the human holiday? I can see that the character in the Santa suit is a Avian, but does the Avian know who Santa is and what he does? >_>;

Agreed. It'd be funny if some of the racial examinations of a Christmas tree had stuff such as "Confused. Who puts lights on a tree?" (Glitch), "A sacred ceremonial spike related to a human religion." (Avian), and "Is this thing made of metal?!" (Apex). Heh.

That is a great post. Trying to explain the way certain things go down in connection with game programming like this can be hard especially with a indie team like this one. I find it very useful to use illustrations like you have done. One such illustration I like for release dates goes something like this.

Imagine that a person called you to have you paint there entire house, and replace all the carpet in the house with Tile flooring. The only info your given is as follows:

    1. The house is 1800 square feet,
    2. it contains 8 rooms (all of which are currently carpeted)
    3. They want the house painted a cream color.

These people want to know when you can start and when you will be done and they have to know right now over the phone. What would you say? Well you've got a few options.

    A. Give them a super large completion date (Eh, that will take about 8months)
    B. Do your best to guess how long it will take and give them the smallest amount of time you think possible ( I should be able to do that in about a week)
    C. Tell them, forget that! Thats a ton of work I have no idea how to do any of it. Dont ever call me again!

If you choose option A you risk making them upset and loosing their business.
If you choose option B you risk not being done in time and having them be upset that its only half finished and loose other potential customers in the process.
and If you choose C then you will probably never get another job in that field again.

You see everyone wants to know when, when when when when when, when this, when that. If you don't give an answer people will be upset that you dont communicate, and if you do give an answer there are only 3 possible outcomes, Its not completed in that amount of time and people are upset, its completed ahead of time but lacks polish and people are upset, and the most rare of them all. You manage to guess correctly and though everyone is happy that it was done when you said it would be they were all angry and upset for having to wait so long.

I think we all know Valve, and there ETA's, we dont need another one of those developers now do we. :p

My favorite solution is one that I haven't covered and that's what the starbound team is so great at and is what is making a lot of up and coming developers so appreciated. Taking that little bit of extra time each day to come out of your coding cave and post an overview of what was done that day/week no matter how small or boring. Not only does it really intrigue and excite us more technically inclined people but it also shows everyone that progress is being made, changes are happening, things are being made, and that this isnt just another Cubeworld, or Half life 7 (or whatever number you want to choose, lol).

I saw the wall hanging and the first thing I thought of was the Crystalline Entity from Star Trek: TNG.

Come to think of it... that'd be a cool boss to fight, maybe later in the game.

Well, i doubt that chucklefish can afford this... Counter-stike can do it, cause they're made by Valve, who earns millions... They got a server set up, just to keep track of the servers people are making... And this costs quite alot to have running.

This is the primary problem with little indie games, they don't have the backing to make it as user-friendly as a huge corp.

Tiy, I don't know if you read ALL of the comments, but I really want to see binary and trinary star systems implemented. In real life; in our real universe, the vast majority of star systems are actually binary star systems, meaning the systems have two suns that revolve around one another. I would love to see a sunrise and sunset on my screen at the same time. (Much like the description from the human Trailblazer armor.)

I don't know if Tiy even spends that much time on the forums. But we have a subforum dedicated to game suggestions, though I'm fairly sure that binary star systems have been suggested before.
