I was a bit mad at Tiy because he delayed development "for a day" after I hit a game-breaking bug.

This is what I think what could happen to Starbound thanks to the modsupport nonsense. There are already dozens of mods and the game is still in its first step of three beta steps and even in this early stage I already do not know many people not using mods for Starbound anymore. If they start supporting mods even more, nobody will play vanilla and everytime you want to play with somebody else you have to discuss which mods to install, which version, where to download, where to put, what to change, blabla. Very annoying thing, just like in Minecraft, which I ragequit long time ago because of these things. What I most fear is that the game becomes only a mess of content that nobody really needs and, like you said, are only there to ease things until there is no challenge anymore. I hope Chucklefish chooses suggestions to implement wisely like Yoda would and stops all that sick modsupport..

These where my exact thoughts on this. I laughed! But hey, we are young, we have time..

There are race specific skills already. They are just not yet implemented wohoo!

How will this "overhaul" of the way we progress affect our current character layouts ? I'm in Sector X, what happens to me if It gets updated while i'm in that location ?

I know I signed up for this, knowing stuff will get moved and changed. However I want to know if it's worth investing my time in Starbound or if I should wait until this overhaul comes ?

Mod support isn't bad man, mods can help the developers see things they might otherwise not have thought about.
Your character will probably be taken hostage by penguins... Ha ha ha ha *snort*

You don't quite understand what I mean. Too many mods lead to an uncontrolled crowd of mod-playing customers. They are likely to forget about the original game and it doesn't help the developers to find and fix bugs if everyone is busy playing things they didn't develop. Think of ARMA 2 and DayZ. What if the ARMA developers wanted to create DLCs or something but nobody really cares because the players only buy ARMA to be able to play DayZ. See the Problem? That's not the way games should be made and be played and that's why I hate that nearly every indie game has full mod support.

So.. what I want to say is if you like mods so hard, why not telling Chucklefish to stop working on Starbound because there are thousands of modders out there to do their job..?

The first thing I believe most people will do is to play the original game, before they try any mods. Of course the best mods will likely be used by many people. What's most important is of course the original game, but I don't see mod support as a bad thing really. The way I see it, it only strengthens Starbound's replayability.

But of course it is important that the original game is very enjoyable, so much so that you shouldn't feel like you "need to" use mods in order to have fun while playing the game. So it's up to the developers to bring the original game that far, it will take time but I bet they can get there.

Not to be a jerk, but... "Like, today. Not a month from now" ... It's getting preting darn close to that mark since that was posted.

From what i understand, you'll probably want to just start over anyways, the entire progression system will be overhauled (which is obviously a huge part of the game), so you'd be missing out on a lot if you just kept your current character/universe.

I've honestly gotten bored with the way the game is currently, i'm waiting for a more complete release to start playing again.

never and nobody are a bit strong to say. There will be people out there that will play vanilla. even now there are people that play vanilla minecraft solely. those that don't have such great computers most definitely won't have much choice in the matter since their machines couldn't handle too many mods. Me personally I only use 1 and that is just to boost FPS so I could play the game well. As for starbound, the only mod i currently would use is the one I am making for my personal use. And basically that just brings what is already in the game to be craftable. I have faith that the blocks and other things will be available one way or another beyond destroying buildings in the future...

If that doesn't happen then, why be a basic builder that only uses metal. :( Not all buildings are made with metal... Anyway until that would happen I guess using something as a temporary is fine.

I actually like the vanilla game in most games, there is few exceptions. SWGB & SC4 being 2 of them. Something like minecraft and terraria i don't bother with mods that heavily modify the base game. content is one thing, but mechanics and such just don't really interest me much. I am a builder after all. Sure mods are not really a bad or good thing, as that varies with each individual. So I am sure there are many out there that would play as much vanilla as modded. Vanilla is only the start. :D Although I love strawberries too...

But in many of those games the grinding was so well integrated it didn't even feel like grinding. (I.e. animal crossing and Skyrim for sure) that's what I think they are going for

Mods makes the game so much better. There are mindblowing talanted people out there in the modding community and wishing that Chucklefish stops modsupport is sickening in itself.

It's just that the game is just less good without mods, simple as.

Assuming people genuinely think there is a literal pixel to play mechanic, I submit the following:

Have you considered that those pixels would purchase a quest vital item? Anyone heard of a game called Legend of Zelda? I remember walking into a shop and buying some pretty ridiculous stuff with ungodly rupees to get places. Just saying.

excuses do not make a bad mechanic good . pay to progress kill's the fun of a sandbox game.

Well, in that game you were buying from a shop keeper, that makes sense. Paying a crafting mechanic feels a little out of place, unless it's the 3D Printer which has some meaning to it, like assembling the pixels into objects.

Agreed. I'm going under the assumption that the current system is a placeholder since this is beta. 800 pixels plus 15 iron = power gloves? Hypothetical situation

Yeah, I think it's a placeholder, at least I hope so lol :D

Wouldn't want to start paying pixels senselessly for everything you are about to do in the game. "Hover the mouse over a door, displays: (Opening this small door costs 5 pixels)" - "Hover the mouse over a even bigger door, displays: (Opening this bigger door will cost you 25 pixels.)"

Edit: After a little thought, a door which requires pixels could be fun though. Just not with all the doors lol
