The Funding Question: What SHOULD Chucklefish Do?

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by LadyAijou, Apr 21, 2012.

?

In what way would you be most comfortable supporting the game and Chucklefish?

  1. Straight donation to the company

    56.3%
  2. Donation via buying a T-shirt/hat/different game with proceeds going to Chucklefish

    47.5%
  3. Donation for virtual goodies, such as an exclusive item upon release

    33.8%
  4. Donation for a fancy account title on the forums, such as "Supporter"

    38.8%
  5. I don't like the idea of donations

    5.0%

yep, that would be pretty much perfect, but regardless of "rewards" or not, I hope they let us help them ^_^

I really like this idea. A simple supporter badge would be awesome. And I can imagine how much certain people wanna play along with the devs on the release.

I would be ok for paying for virtual goods, but that would seem hugely unfair for those who cannot afford it, or won't.

That's a valid point, and that's why I honestly lean far more toward just straight donations. Something that if people CAN give, and WANT to give, they can, but nothing that would divide the community between those who can afford to donate and those who can't, or don't wish to.

I personally wouldnt donate, but its cool to leave a Donate button around, if anyone is whilling to give the devs a financial help.
Perhaps depending on how much someone donated, they could have an item or npc suggested ingame by the team on the original version (not a standalone mod). This should have a limit, though.
Giving the member a pretty and shiny title aswell? Its ok, may give this person some status? I dont really care about this stuff much but some other people do, so yeah, why not?

Giving a ingame item? No, this sound kinda silly and people would find a way to hack this item into their characters.

What if a forum event was made out of it? Say for example, every person that donated (maybe X amount) got their name put into a drawing. The winner of said drawing would get to do something like Name a creature that will be put into the game. (I'm sure the devs could make an unnamed creature) Or at least something along those lines.

    Over 9000x this.

That said, I'd totally pay for a t-shirt if they decided to do that too. And I say pay because (to me at least) donating means you do it without expecting to get anything in return other than a thank you. Plus it would let the company set the price at something that would mean a profit to them, so photostyle's potential problem would not happen.

I'd donate in whatever way I could, but yeah... Being able to buy a sweet Starbound t-shirt would be amazing.

  10. I could do so, but that may upset people who have already voted/be unbalanced.

I'd rather do straight donations. I don't want "Donating" to become "Buying something extra." If there's no promise of an item/title, the people that wanna donate but can't afford it wouldn't feel like they're missing out. I have no problems with Chucklefish rewarding notable donators, but sometimes people misuse the word donate. Back in the days of my Private Ragnarok servers, "Donate" became nothing more than a fancy term for "Buy these exclusive items, this is a cash shop." A donation implies a generous contribution without the expectation of receiving something back. It's fine to help the company out a little bit, but people might feel obligated if they think they're missing out on a supercool something-or-other that donators get.

It's a literal land-mine thrown into a field: One of those things that people like to blow out of proportion given the chance. People would get mad that said items (If items is the reward) aren't free. Sometimes they don't understand that sometimes you have to pay more to get more. (Same people that complain about paid DLC, Collector's editions, etc) I have no problems with Chucklefish rewarding people for possibly donating, but we should just avoid the crapstorm I know will be created if we offer exclusive in-game "Thank you gifts." Not sure how they feel about custom/donator titles, however.

Tiy actually did it, moments after the thread went up, so I think we'll still get a good clear picture :3

I voted for option one and two. Those are the only ones that seem reasonable to me. The promise of in game exclusive content for stuff like that has always been kind of a silly thing to me. As for a forum title, that's kind of silly too :p

I would really want to be a support the game and get a support sticker on top of my avatar; but then I realized it only serves to say:

"Hey look! I am an amazingly spoiled brat who have no concept of the values of money!"

Is Chucklefish short on cash? Maybe I just don't understand the context of this question, is Starbound development being hindered by a lack of funds? I'd chip in for a Pre-Order if they need it (Kickstarter style, yeah).

Like any project, this one requires funding. The team has been reluctant to allow people to contribute, but I think that they're coming close enough to the end of this that they need funds. Tiy has said kickstarter is something they can't/won't do, apparently its very legally complicated, as are pre-orders. They're looking for other ways the community might want to support it, if at all, and what some of their options might be.

If anyone hasn't voted yet, please do! I think the team really wants to know how everyone feels so that they can make an informed decision :3

This is weird. If someone donated, say the price for a full copy or more, where would be the legal problems of just giving them a free copy when the game is released ? I mean i understand the need for funding, no problems with that, but the most awesome thing we could get in return for paying way ahead of the release would be the game once it comes out, at least in my opinion.

I'd gladly pay, but i'm not interested in a fancy forum title, or to be thanked as long as i know that my money is well invested, which seems kind of a given with this team. I'd really, really like to pre order or at least have the line "For x amount of money you will get the game IF it will be released." Simply because i know fate can be cruel. And just to be clear: I personally have no problem on doing it on an "IF" basis. The top reason for me to donate would however be to get the game, i don't even want it for less (though i wouldn't complain xD) i just want the payment out of my head.

  19. Preorder =/= donation in exchange for the game at release. Preorder means you are -promised- the game when it is released. :c

Well i honestly don't care about the legal background work as long as the result is the same.
