Considering Terraria's occasional comical enemies (killer snowmen, anyone?), I went with a silly approach for an alien lifeform- the Flybat. Flybats are relatively harmless in nature but come in a variety of species. They are carrion feeders in nature, so don't naturally attack other creatures or humanoids, and are rather paranoid of other creatures due to their slight lack in natural defenses. They do have claws on their wings and feet, but these are primarily for clinging to objects rather than actual combat. However, the Flybats will use their claws to tear at carrion. Flybats live in a variety of areas, some thriving on the surface, while others live in jungles and caverns. The only really known hostile species of Flybat are the Vampire Flybats, which prefer live blood rather than a fetid corpse. While the Vampire Flybat will eat rotten flesh, they would much prefer warm blood, and will grapple its prey with its claws, making it the only non-skittish species of Flybat, and the only inherently violent, predatory one.
I was actually a little surprised myself after I made the sprite and realized that it fit... I mean, flies and bats? Like... very little in common at all... I'm not even sure I understand it and I made the blasted thing. Haha.
Mh, some bats suck blood, and flies have a proboscis too suck on things too, so that's one similarity. Also both can fly, and they're both pretty fast and shy. Also the whole visual concept just fits together with the big eyes and all.
I know there's a species of moth that drinks blood; don't know about flies though. Two animals we're familiar with though, and it can so easily make an alien one. Which makes me curious what other combinations would possibly work well together. Ah well, quite honestly, I really don't care if I win or not. I had fun making it, if they wanna use it, well then that's pretty awesome if you ask me. If not, then at least I made something for the fun of it. Heh.
That's my thoughts exactly. If I win, that's extremely cool, but if not I atleast found a reason to get creative again, and that's worth alot to me.
Definitely made me lawl. I don't know WHAT they were... but there was something in Silent Hill 3 or 4 that looked like the cross breed of a moth and a fly. They looked like moths and sounded like bats. I think 4, but I started calling them mothbats, then this inspiration came around for some reason.
Tehe, you should look for tutorials around the web, or visit the website PixelJoint, it's be best one when it comes to pixel art in my opinion. You can learn alot there.
You could always just play around with it too. I'm going on 20 and have been playing with Microsoft Paint since I was 8, I believe. To me what I made isn't anything overly impressive and is rather simple.
