THE FLOOD Now I say the flood because its easy to relate to from Halo, nasty organism that works as a virus. With its sole purpose to infect other lifeforms and then alter their genetic code to suit their needs. The corruption because we can relate to Terraria how the corruption worked there. Other Sci-Fi creators have used this sort of organism alot (The Thing, Dead Space, Zergs). Maybe this will be a thing you can find and release, maybe to get a main story item/NPC/planet/ whatever you have to release this virus (OR at random main story item/etc. this virus may be released). So this organism will start by infecting all creatures then terraforming the planet. Lets say after 1hour every creature there is infected and three (depending on map size) "queens" are born at random places deep inside the planet. After 2hours they start to terraform the planet from the inside, and after 4hours it is completed, the entire planet has transformed to a nasty place, swamp like (meanwhile the creatures will multiply). After 5hours they start to build "rocks" that can shoot out from the surface to other planets (most rocks find nothing, this can be balanced so its very random, sometimes they may infect many planets and sometimes very few). The surface of the terraformed planets is replaced with a sort of fungus, nurturing the infected creatures while they walk upon it. Giving them a buff in health damage and speed. Way to stop it? Find and kill the queens before they start terraforming (maybe the blocks will be harder to break too). Find a weakness (fire?) or/and a NPC that can help you modify weapons to deal more damage, items to purify the earth and buildings that constantly purifies within a certain radius (you will need turrets etc. to defend them since the creatures will gather there). The process of eliminating the virus should be pretty long but not to long, but long enough for you to feel a achievement, like you want to send a box of champagne to every ally world. I can imagine this virus to be used in non-story maps, where its CO-OP survival with turrets, building defences etc.
No offense, but I would prefer the stereotypical 'consume ALL the things!' virus/parasite out of Starbound.
Im glad you liked it, please evolve the idea if you wish ^^ Cool avatar Yeah I thought of that chapter really irritating while it lasted but when it was done... I kinda missed it since it really felt like a virus that would never stop and I liked it. I liked the feeling of a nemesis can constantly threw everything it had on me. And when you stopped it it felt good, it would be awesome to experience that again in Starbound
I love the idea, but make them be a bit more like the tyranids. Meaning that in the monstors they kill, theirs a chance that they can make a new creature, while similar to the old one, it changed and often stronger with new powers.
And I do love how you didn't point out some of the original parasitic organisms, such as MrL567 pointed out Tyranids and Aliens ( Facehuggers and such ) And the Control Bug Caste from Starship Troopers. ( which came before both of these ideas and is rather old ) I feel like an old wippersnapper for even bringing most of those up. Halo didn't have these ideas first lads!
Oh how I hate Carnifexs, ROLE OUT THE LEMAN RUSSES... And aim your flashlights steadly. FOR THE EMPEROR MEN!. (Back on topic) I think the Tyranid style of enemy would suit this game alot more, as they adapt and evolve. (as MrL567 has stated)
Or maybe if it was some sort of Free willed Cybernetic Army that basically Terra forms with some sort of Techno-organic virus or other vector, leaving augmented flora and fauna just spawning around. All of its culminates into one planets entire biosphere turned into a Bio-mechanical military-industrial zone, teaming with Biots and Cyber-fauna. Kinda getting sick of the whole squishy "assimilate all life" deal that's going on these days. Why not try the Trans-organic approach.
Ah.. You mean like the borg? or the replicators from stargate? Yeah I think thats just as good as any organic parasite. ( even if the borg are slightly organic )
Nice idea! and it could adapt to the form you play in order to find your weak point! (ok maybe that'll be very hard to play with) BUT STILL A GREAT IDEA
Yes but unlike the Borg I was going for a corporation Of these Techno organic beings build up. The whole goal would be to consume a planet, terraform the environment so that they could "Grow" factories, and change the local fauna into weapons or products that they can sell/use. For instance slimes that can shape shift into turrets and launchers, Flying creatures shoot missiles or just happen to be missiles, and big cybernetic creatures that can be used as tanks. Something that's a big risk to take on, yet has a big enough reward you might not want to destroy a useful factory planet.
Cept they are dumb cause ORGANISMS THAT LOOK LIKE GUNS and shoot beetles or some stuff Also killing Thule But it would be awesome to see a parasite-like race going around the universe terramorming stuff into alien-spires or huge nests. And Starbound being more mod-friendly, it's just a matter of time till we see a total convertion to the Warhammer 40k scenario.
I bet you do, I also bet few recent games have shown how such a parasite race would act, hence Halo Zergs and Dead Space. I also mentioned The Thing which was made 30 years ago, that actully was based of a novella published 1938, not old enough for you son? I did but I should have explained more about the Zergs from Starcraft... Anyway the lore there is that when the zergs eat/kill a creature, they (hive mind) can alter its genetic code to suit its purpose better. Grow new limbs, claws or make it spit acid/something not healthy A semi-robotic race that assimilates living creatures to serve their needs are cool too.... HELL, why not have the organic "flood" have a war with the cyborgs!
I prefer the term "Pestilence". Also Corruption due to my love of Terraria. Maybe the mobs that get infected could get a "Corrupted" prefix?
I always liked the idea of some kind of race that devoured everything, like the Flood, the Corruption and the Tyranids. Maybe we could add a twist - It turns out that a scientist created a self-replicating organism it to gather resources, with different variants for different resources, but then he was corrupted and went mad, using his creation to devour everything (Grey Goo theory anyone?) There would be different variants of creature to add variety. You would have to fight him as a boss, on his original planet, which has completely been overtaken, and snap him out of his madness. He then becomes an NPC and helps you in your space station.
