that does not in any way refute what tyrindor said.

Would you care to elaborate further upon your statement? As my view on the matter has not changed as a result of your comment.

Good, I'm getting a lot of characters can't use anymore because of balance updates and I just got to impervium with my main character.

    I don't like this personally.

People complain about pandering, and then want devs to make a way for them to keep their OP characters, pre-launch build, forever.

This in no way helps them collect accurate data for what to expect, and how to tweak things for the actual launch.

Well, thanks for the information. But it's worth playing the tiers again if it will be the last time.

Man, if the devs will just as EASILY not follow their own beta rules than what else is privy to be thrown out the window if people that paid for this BETA expecting a full game bitch and moan about next.

I really can't wait for this patch. Even if there are tears later because the system really doesn't prevent wipes, I can at least start to emotionally invest in and enjoy my characters and worlds.

So... inferring from the description of the phases, does this mean the next update will be bringing the Beta Phase 2? Or are character wipes just stopping midway through Phase 1?

Either way, no more character wipes = yay

Not necessarily, I think Stage 2 indicates they think they're much more stable and closer to their goals, not just free of wipes, though fewer is part of the Stage 2 goals. I'm kind of expecting more or less regular world wipes.

Can someone explain to me the difference between Character and World wipes?

As I understand it, by a few official posts, the next character wipe is the final one. After that, characters are forever. The official Starbound Twitter even said "you can start getting attached to your character."

a character wipe wipes your character and its inventories out of existence

a world wipe keeps your character intact but resets all planets in the universe, including any items you've stored or buildings you've created on those worlds.

In your <steam folder>/steamapps/common/starbound/player folder, there are 3 files per character. A *.metadata file that does dev-knows-what, a *.player file that contains your character's status and inventory, and a *.shipworld file that contains your ship's current state (things you've placed, shiplocker inventory, fuel level, etc.).

When a "character wipe" occurs, those files are of a format that can no longer be read by the game, and they're deleted. They won't work anymore. The reason this is the final character wipe is that they're adding a versioning scheme and are going to maintain version upgrade paths from now on. (e.g.: This file is version "A", but we need version "D" now, so upgrade it from A->B->C->D and it will work in the latest version of the game.)

In your <steam folder>/steamapps/common/starbound/universe folder, there are a bunch of *.world files and a few assorted other things. Each one of those world files is the difference between the freshly terrain-generated state and the current state of a planet. If all you do is jump from planet to planet and strip the surface of anything valuable, there will be lots of small world files in that folder. But for any planets that you make heavy modifications to, their files will be much larger.

When a "world/universe wipe" occurs, these are the files that are deleted. This is for the same reasons as the character wipe. But there hasn't been any promise of a "last universe wipe" yet, so expect plenty of those through the entire beta period.

Am I the only person who looks at a "no more character wipes" announcement with dread? Because it means that there are going to be core issues that, if found to be broken, CAN'T BE FIXED.
