Race The Ethereals (Mod now available!)

Yes please! I'm by no means a pro at modding and coding (this is the first mod I've ever actually made) but I will try to help as much as I can.
Also, when it crashes does it close immediately?

I thought you meant Ethereals as in X-Com. Yeah, I dont like the whole furry idea. The intelligent, physically sensitive race from X-Com would have been better. Or something like that. Kinda tired of all these furries.

I'm sorry you were misled, friend. If you are so bothered that my idea is not up to your standards, you should probably ask someone else to make a one that is.
Again though, they're not furries. Did you even read the thread? Because if Ethereals are furries in the way that you seem to believe they are, that would make the Apex, Avians, and even Florans "furry" as well. They evolved that way; why does this bother you so much that you have to generalize an idea that I've put years of thought into?

I just downloaded it and set it up, and it works fine.

I just have two quick suggestions: Would you consider maybe 'thinning' Ethereals down a bit in a future mod version ? Their in-game models are a touch off from their tall, lithe concept art.

Also, have you considered maybe incorporating other modder's hairstyles (and perhaps hair colors' into the Ethereals ?

What is your definition of furry? What animal do they even look like that you could compare them to other furries? Have you even looked at the concept art? What would would be the point of taking the same concept as X-Com, reusing the exact same name and then putting it into Starbound?

I'll look into using other mods for hairstyles, although I'd rather the race be entirely original so I don't feel like I'm ripping off of somebody else's work, haha

If you really hate furries, you should stop playing Starbound altogether. Tiy likes animal people and it's pretty obvious looking at a few races. If more races are added, we could see more anthro creatures.

Hating on furries because it's hip is ignorant and asinine.

 

after sending hourrs on this race in game, i really love it. i enjoy what you done here and hope you keep improving/refining it farther.

{Totally random sidenote, but I saw someone was asking about Ethereal racial armor. I personally think that brightly colored and slim-fitting Victorian-Era clothing would be kind of cool....}

Pardon my asking, but are you going to be adding any more scale color/eye color combos ?

There were two pale white scales + green eyes Ethereal combos that I really liked that seem to have been removed with the slimmer character models...

On a whim I just clicked the modding link on the main page and started poking around the races. I wasn't really expecting to find anything, it was more just random curiosity. Then I stumbled across your Ethereals and fell in love almost instantly. I got them in my game right after the holiday and honestly I'm enjoying the game a lot more than I was before. I've been kind of holding off because I figured I'd be playing a Novakid and I didn't want to invest time in something I wasn't really interested in but now I'm really getting into the game with these little aliens. I love their design and their background, the idea of nomadic cultures always interested me so it has the same sort of appeal as the Quarians did for me in Mass Effect.

One tidbit of the culture I thought would be fun to expand upon is the mention that they get along surprisingly well with Florans since they remind the Ethereals of their lost homeworld. Given the Florans are a race of marauding, barbaric, flesh-eating plants I think the Ethereals must have had a hell of a homeworld.
Might be fun to play that up in some of their racial gear or maybe the crops, an affinity and fondness for horribly dangerous flora.

So yeah, I just wanted to throw in my support for your project. I'm really looking forward to seeing them more fleshed out!

Edit: What's with all these people being disappointed that this isn't something from another game? "Aww man, someone had an original idea? That sucks, I wanted more blatant copying of someone else's idea"

Edit2: If you're accepting requests on color combos could you throw in a Green-Turqoise base with cool-grey eyes? That combined with purple hair is one of my personal favorite color schemes on monsters/aliens. >w<

And your idea about their home world is spot on - it was a treacherous place, but fragile nonetheless. You can get an idea of their background from the ship's appearance, and you will definitely see it in the items I have planned. It's a shame that I probably won't get them done very soon..

 

Sweet, I'm glad I was on the right track.

It's no worry about the wait, I am a patient sort of person, I did have a thought though. I've done some minor modifications to my own games sometimes. Nothing serious, mostly just some really basic spriting, minecraft skins for character/armor/items, or modifying text files.
Now my thought is that if enough people are interested and have a passing familiarity with the concepts of spriting, you could post concept art for what you want stuff to look like, maybe a link to an example in-game so we know what the style is we have to fit, and then have people contribute what they can. You might get some good help or at the very least get a base that you can work with and modify so you don't have to start from scratch. Then as people submit stuff you just check it off on the public list of stuff to do.
Of course getting the ideas across and herding a bunch of forumers might be even more work than just handling it yourself.
No idea if that'd be at all workable but I thought I'd bring it up. Best of luck!

 

I was wondering if i could draw some fan-art of your race if that's ok. i'm not very good yet but i really want to draw your idea out if that's ok with you. i'll give you all the credit for the awsome race you've come up with.
