    Your Buddy Bill Existential Complex

    Updated 2!
    Did you know:
    One Hylotl starting codex and several NPC dialogue lines mention a mysterious Hylotl Directive 0451.
    Code:
    {
      "id" : "hylotldirective",
      "title" : "Spread Your Peace",
      "contentPages" : [

        "Dearest Hylotl missionary,
    You have gone out into the great wide world to spread the glory of our species, and to help those less fortunate than ourselves. For this, we thank you.",

        "May the Hylotl spread peace throughout the universe. Be discerning. Be polite. And remember Directive 0451. If you do not know what Directive 0451 is, then do not worry about it. Or ask about it. Just do your job, okay?"

      ]
    }
    The NPCs tell you that you can "drop the pretense", suggesting that the "peace missionaries" are not REALLY on peace missions.
    What missions are they on?
    Let's look to objects/hylotl/hylotlsign3o for the answer!
    Code:
    {
      "objectName" : "hylotlsign3o",
    (...)
      "shortdescription" : "Orange Neon Collector Sign",
      "description" : "A sign seeking Hylotl to collect spawn from the surface.",
      "race" : "hylotl",

      "apexDescription" : "My translator says this sign is asking Hylotl to kidnap babies. That can't be right, surely?",
      "avianDescription" : "According to my translator, the Hylotl are stealing children. I find this hard to believe.",
      "floranDescription" : "Buzzy sssign annoy Floran.",
      "glitchDescription" : "Critical. Perhaps the Hylotl should consider how their language translates. This appears as if they're stealing babies.",
      "humanDescription" : "Whoa, I always suspected the Hylotl were up to something. No, this can't be right.",
      "hylotlDescription" : "A request for Hylotl to collect spawn from the surface, a charitable and benevolent act.",
    (...)
      ]
    }
    Hylotl Missionary Directive 0451: Kidnap babies.
    Update! Villhelm pointed out a possible alternative explanation!
    I'll take a look at this now...
    Well, looks like Villhelm may be correct in that the sign could be referencing the euphos.
    Code:
      "description" : "The euphos are charged with tending to hyltol spawn close to the surface.",
    Both alternatives are possible. Perhaps neither is right. But we know what we might know, and that's still more than nothing.

    Did you know:
    There is a number of top-secret assassins called the Helion?
    They're mentioned by a few NPCs ingame, referred to as "frightening".
    They're referenced in some unused codexes.
    towerascendant07
    Code:
    {
      "id" : "towerascendant07",
      "title" : "The Ascendant's Tale #7",
      "contentPages" : [

        "To become a Sunborn, one must be cunning as well as strong. Without my formula, Larbeaks has an edge over me. Perhaps she will take it herself. I cannot risk this. My manservant has been sent off-world, to make contact with a certain Helion.",

        "Dealing with Helions is always risky business. My mother would often hire one of these creatures to keep political rivals in their place, but this is my first time. I admit, I feel something of a thrill."

      ]
    }
    towerascendant09
    Code:
    {
      "id" : "towerascendant09",
      "title" : "The Ascendant's Tale #9",
      "contentPages" : [

        "It is done. Larbeaks is no more. Nobody suspects a thing. And yet I am shaken, concerned. You see, the Helion visited me after the kill. This is unheard of. Almost never do the Helion reveal themselves to their clients. And yet, I woke up in the night to feel a hand on my shoulder.",

        "The Helion was not what I expected. He was soft-spoken, calm. His name is Hish'eth and he said I knew my mother. That he'd been there when she died. I asked him if that meant what I thought it meant. He shook his head, and I thought I could detect a sadness in his eyes.",

        "He asked about the Ascension. I explained it all to him, about my journey to become a Sunborn. The Helion laughed and accused me of hubris. 'Why risk your life to achieve godhood when you can become a god of your own making?' he asked. I thought about the Celestial Tower, about the fall, about the numerous Avians who did not fly."

      ]
    }
    They are not Avian. Hish'eth is not an Avian name, and the author (later revealed to be Thornwing) calls them "these creatures", indicating that they are not of his kind.

    All Apex dungeons attempt to put lore items inside the "Cool Desk", including the Apex Test Chambers, and that the Cool Desk is the only Lore-treasure-pool object in the Test Chambers?
    The problem is that the Cool Desk is not a storage item...

    Did you know:
    There are codex entries and icons for every dungeon in the game except the Scifi Dungeon and the Abandoned Mines?
    Many dungeons don't have any of the proper storage containers with lore treasure assigned to them.
    A few dungeons (avian temple, avian tower) don't even have any storage containers at all.
    THE MORE YOU KNOW...
    You know how the Avians have those sarcophagi in their tombs?
    Bunnies are for the damned and whatnot?
    Hylotl players can make the following observation about bunny sarcophagi:
    "hylotlDescription" : "The crystals in this sarcophagus appear to hold it closed. Was the inhabitant still alive when they were shut in?",
    It gets worse!
    The folder objects/avian/sarcohuman contains not ONE .object file, but TWO. The second is unused.
    Here are the contents of the second file.

      "race" : "avian",

      "apexDescription" : "A sarcophagus, it's human-shaped. Wait... what was that?",
      "avianDescription" : "Some of the first Avians amongst the stars had deep friendships with humans. This is an attempt to bring humans to the aether so they might also gain wi- wait... did I hear something?",
      "floranDescription" : "Sssmells fresh!.",
      "glitchDescription" : "Evaluate. A human sits inside this sarcophagus. I'm getting life readings!",

      "hylotlDescription" : "Did this sarcophagus just move?",

    At one point, the developers were planning on having an Elf race as playable characters?
    Located under interface/title, among the other character generation portraits, are the following two images:
    selfmale.png selfmale.png
    selffemale.png selffemale.png
    Note that the Apex portraits are called "sapemale.png" and "sapefemale.png", suggesting that the "s" stands for "space" and these are, in fact, elves.

    Did you know:
    There is a bizarre type of NPC that can be found called "colorful"? Their dialogue is bugged (at least last I checked), they apparently do not properly load their own dialogue and pull dialogue from the Apex Villager (for most races) or "replace" for Apex players. This is odd, as they do have complete lines in the code indicating that they are Apex who have been experimented upon, and they know of Greenfinger (indicating his help in creating them, likely a result of the Doctor Lax incident in the unused codex entries for the Test Chambers).

    Did you know:
    The "key" and "key with grid" .png files in each Dungeon folder often contain early versions of objects and tiles?
    Here's a comparison of the apexflusign
    Final vs Early
    apexflusign.png apexflusign.png
    The early version is taken verbatim from the Apex dungeon "key.png" files. Note the differently designed skull.
    Here's more comparisons:
    Obsidian was recolored at some point, formerly black, now dark red. Only one of the five tiles was included so I recolored the other four to match as well. Oddly enough there was actually a three-pixel difference between the old and the new, besides just colors; that difference has not been replicated here.
    Final vs Early
    obsidian.png obsidian2.png
    Here's Rock14, which got darkened considerably.
    Final vs Early
    rock14.png rock14x.png
    No difference in the samples besides color scheme.
    Here's the Chain. My apologies, I didn't quite finish recreating the early version's paint schemes yet, but if you open both up and look at the top, you'll see the Chain underwent a complete overhaul.
    Final vs Early
    chain.png chain.png
    See that difference.
    Finally, the bunkerslidingdoor aka Sliding Door:
    Final vs Early
    bunkerslidingdoor.png bunkerslidingdoor.png
    Note that only two of the three frames (which I assume to be the first and last) were present in the key. The middle frame was created by me as a rough guess of what the middle frame would have looked like.
    Also, I found an odd variant of Fullwood1 in the Floran key. Oddly enough, it differs from all the other keys, which use the current fullwood1.
    Final Fullwood1 vs Early Fullwood1 vs Fullwood2
    fullwood1.png fullwoodx.png fullwood2.png
    Note that only the first tile was present in the sample, and the others were recreated by me based off educated guesses.
    Add that to a png file still in the tiles/materials folder, fullwood3:
    fullwood3.png
    PlantMatter got redesigned. Only the second tile was included in the sample, I'm not done restoring the rest yet.
    Final vs Early
    plantmatter.png plantmatter.png
    Essentially, the leaves grew considerably for the final.
    The Plate material is an odd case. Normally, the "white" paint variant is identical to the "no paint" version. However, the key.png for the Humans shows a version that is noticeably lighter. In the following file, I have replaced the "white" duplicate with the early version's color scheme.
    plate2white.png
    The early version was probably changed because it looks so similar to the Smooth Plated Metal.

    That would have been a pain
    Fat armour and thin armour for every race + gender specific armours.
    Meaning 4 versions of each armour.
    Would have been a nightmare.

    Looks like the Bunny statue was an ex-Bunny-race recolored gray, they reused the Bunny stuff for the Avian culture.
    I wonder which of those might be the Helion?
    And I wonder which might be the "burning men" that a single Apex speaks of? (maybe those are novakids)
    The skeleton looks like something I was planning on making.
    Also I saw that ninja edit.

    Updated, Villhelm noted a possible alternative explanation for the "baby stealing" in the Agaran Menace thread. I didn't ever check the tiered armor descriptions because folder digging is a bitch and I do that enough with objects already for gameplay reasons and I saw no need to give myself everyone elses armor. Well, now I know!

    Again, neither of you read the update note did you
    the Hylotl may or may not have a reasonable explanation
    but either way the sign translates horribly
    it's like how you translate something from English to Chinese and back

    Pretty sure it's talking about the Violium hylotl armor, considering it's description says that it's worn by Hylotl who go to the surface to lead Hylotl spawn down to the cities.

    It seems to me that all the races are beginning to show signs of.. being douches.
    although many of the races are showing signs of "normalcy", I dunno. they all seem like detriments.

    except the humans. and the glitch. maybe Chucklefish are, like, racist against the other races, who knows man.
