The best modders should collaborate

I have been looking at some of the mods people have made, and thought
"If Starbound itself was a big team effort, (along with everything great in the world) what would happen if all the moders worked together?" Would it make Starbound a whole new game?
Imagine the things that could emerge! And how that would change everything, bringing a vast universe into creation.
BTW I am not saying that Starbound needs to be completely changed, I love Starbound as it is, and think it is the best game ever made. (Also it would make sense that more races and planets would be found over time) But what do you think?

I think it's a great idea, but some stuff the devs need to add as core programming into the game. Once they add enough content through patches which makes the game openly available through enough content patches, then the modders would be able to get together and make something like a brand new Starbound.

Stuff that I think needs core programming is:

Side quests which involve adding storyline to the game for each race.
A Gate that allows you to create new worlds, such as Ammonia Planets and Crystal/Diamond Planets.
A hard update and even in some areas revamp on already existing systems, like quests need to be made more exciting.
Things which impact the entire universe, like making it so chests are organized and have certain items in certain chests. When you find a Chef Hat in a Weapons Chest, there's a problem.

Once they add more stuff to the game that's hard programming, the modders could probably create a really, REALLY super mod which would be like a brand new game.

Modders can already do all of those things themselves. Starbound is extremely open to modding, there are few things we cant actually alter. The problem is you need to be very proficient with Lua scripting to really make the more complex stuff, which few people actually know.

That's true, modders could do all of it. But it would be better if it was all done as part of the game.

I agree. However (correct me if I am wrong) the devs for Starbound abandoned it. As Lazarus78 said it could be done with just mods but would require alot of effort. I am learning about modding and know a little about modding other games.

You are wrong. Starbound is not abandoned. The 1.4 update was simply put on hold because Chucklefish didn't feel it was ready. At the moment the focus is on porting to console. But they did announce they will be releasing some new content updates.

It hasn't been abandoned, per se. The 1.4 update has been delayed, since the bounty hunting mechanic they were going to introduce proved unsatisfying during testing, but not cancelled outright. There's also a console port in the works, though that's mostly been outsourced to another studio. And even then, the game's already finished. Most games don't get free official updates forever.

As for your idea, you need to remember that most modders work on a hobbyist basis. You can get teams creating excellent products (I follow a few such projects in the Command & Conquer community), but people still have work and life commitments to contend with. That can make collaboration tricky at best, without even getting into things like creative differences. That's not to say a team-developed mod for Starbound is impossible, but it's likely going to have logistical challenges.

I agree with Jonesy, but you've gotta remember some of the best stuff was worked on that way. Mega Man 2 for the NES was actually a project the people who created the original Mega Man worked on for free, in their own spare time. They only saw money for that game once it was released and they got money from the earnings of that game, but they worked on it the same way. In between work and their own real life.

The thing about Mega Man 2 is that Mega Man was considered a failed project and Capcom basically scrapped it. However, the people who worked on it wanted to make a new Mega Man which worked past its flaws. I find it pretty amazing that such a great game was worked on for free and in between their real life and work, so I think modders could pretty much do the same if what the above posters said is true and that a modder could essentially program new stuff into the game.

That said, I really do think to make sure it works perfectly, some of the core programming stuff still needs to be done by ChuckleFish, and I hope they listen to some of our ideas we've suggested to implement stuff that'd make modders' lives easier on such a task.

No, you don't understand. The functionality for all those things are already in the game. Nothing you suggested requires the developers to do anything. More quests, new worlds, loot lists, etc, we have all that control already. So no "core programming" needs to be done for any of it. We have it already, and it works.

I'd still like them to implement the "World Creation Gates" which act like Space Station Creation, but with planets instead of Space Stations. That would be a great way for modders to add new worlds without disrupting the solar systems we already have.

This sounds a lot like the planet transponder mod, though that requires a bit more in-game legwork with terraformers. Also adding in new worlds requires messing with the universe file, something several mods do just fine already and they can't patch existing systems.

That kinda goes against the exploration aspect of the game. Why explore when you can just make your own world?

For brand new worlds, so it doesn't disrupt the solar systems we already have. It wouldn't really create them, but create access to seeing them (assuming for whatever reason they've been cloaked.)

For all intents and purposes it would be creating them similarly to the way that you create a space station, but lore purposes it would be de-cloaking cloaked worlds in fiery stars' solar systems. Ammonia (acid) planets and Diamond/Crystal planets (which would both have a lot of alien bases on them you'd have to infiltrate.)

I see what you are saying.

I wonder if the station system could be repurposed for that... would depend on how much of it is hard coded stuff...

I mean we already know worlds can be instanced, IE The Ruin world, so if you could couple that with the station placement system, then in theory, you could make custom worlds that way...

There should be a Five Nights at Freddy's mod where you have to do an entire restaurant themed level where animatronics try to eat you. You shouldn't be able to get a weapon until much later in the game, and you shouldn't have the ability to jump. Only close certain doors which may let them in (so I guess it'd be more like Metroid Fusion, but with animatronics.)

Sorry guys, I posted this on my old profile, I have moved on from this thread but thanks for posting. (If you are wondering why it is because my old pc broke.)

Most of the stuff you said already is possible.

Changes I would like to see is an actual liquid API.
Currently one of the most annoying features is trying to find the name of a liquid. Instead it gives you a liquid ID number and liquid quantity.
Problem with liquid ID number is it can be anything based on any mod.

Liquid 20 can be Ketchup in one mod or Bear fat in another. Using numbers to designate liquids was an extremely bad idea for modding.

  18. lazarus78

Not just liquids, but blocks as well. Material ID numbers instead of just going with unique IDs like everything else makes mod compatibility kinda difficult when adding in new blocks.

Started using commands. Liquid needs to change. (BTW what's the ID for Erchius liquid?"
