Because accidentally disturbing some sort of spiritual ceremony and breaking into a military base clearly warrant the same sort of punishment and is clearly the same thing.

The Agarans are clearly as murderous as their plant "brethren".
The galaxy should be purged by fire.

I could note numerous instances in history where the former actually garners even more severe consequences than the latter.

    You want to know something?
Everything against the Agarans were made by Charlton McVicar. This is his first work, and we have no idea how good he is at his job.
Anybody ever considered that this entire "Menace" thing is a propaganda? A hoax?
It's happened before in history, and people have died because of it.
And example is the "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast.
    http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/welles-scares-nation
People hear what they want to hear.
And right now, space is a pretty screwed up place. Why not believe that there are Agarans making galactic beasts?

The funny thing is that there is no in-game evidence of Agarans being hostile at all.

People take their religions very seriously. If the story was that it was an Agaran military base and the Hylotl had walked in and gotten killed, would you react the same? Probably. You genocidal maniacs don't seem to be able to be convinced how foolish you are sounding.

To support that, the Aztecs believed that their gods had already destroyed the world four times, and would do it again if they were not pleased.
Maybe the Agarans believe something like that, except the galaxy is destroyed instead or something. Since they were interrupted by the Hylotl, they probably thought that they must kill and sacrifice them to make up for stopping the ritual.

Perhaps their god is actually the Tentacle Beast, referencing what McVicar said.
The agarans heard about earth, and are frantically trying to save the universe from certain destruction.
Doesn't seem ridiculous if you think about it.

  8. Lecic

I don't think McVicar meant that he saw a literal tentacle beast in the fungal caves. I'm pretty sure he just meant it was an infestation that was horrible and reminded him of a similar horrible infestation.

I know, but it's a remote possibility. Chances are he was probably hitting the skooma before wandering into those caves.

    Well... it could actually happen.
I don't mean like a full tentacle comet, capable of destroying a planet but a tentacle spore. They are shorter than the player and could easily fit in a cave. All you would need to do is find a semi-child tentacle comet and fight it, which will cause it to release its children to defend itself.
But he could also see the infestation. That is more likely.

The Hylotl DO NOT kidnap babies. I am so tired of that misunderstanding. UGH. Along with the assumption of infection or different life stages of Agaran. It is pure conjecture at this point. Let's wait until we have some actual evidence. Pretend you are all scientists for just a little while, please.

Now then, we have all seen examples of seemingly unprovoked violence from tons of other groups in game. Cultists, Avians within temples and tombs, humans in bases and penal colonies, Floran released from prison, etc... We have not ever seen unprovoked violence from Agaran in game. Even if we had, however, this would not make them any worse than the other races we have seen attacking us. Use your brains people. Just because the dev says the word MENACE does not mean you all have to go into a terrifyingly vicious murderous rage calling for genocide. There is no in-game evidence of anything hostile on the part of the Agaran. The lore releases do seem to suggest those Hylotl were killed. It also seems to suggest the journalist stumbled upon something disturbing. However, in both cases we are getting very very little of the picture. Here is a possible example to consider that would show Agaran as not being so awful.

A giant tentacle beast lands on an Agaran world. It begins influencing the Agaran via mind control or some such ability. Hylotl land on the planet and stumble upon Agaran doing something odd. The creature instructs them to kill the Hylotl. Later Mcvicar comes across the same planet. Sees the Tentacle beast in a cave and a captured Hylotl. The Agarans are being controlled by the beast who is meeting with some Floran who are emissaries of Greenfinger. Greenfinger is of course responsible for the Tentacle beast because well you know, he is Greenfinger.

You see? In this possible scenario, the Agaran just as much the victims as everyone else.

If you were referring to my post earlier, I know that hylotl don't kidnap babies. It was just a rude remark since people keep calling for murder and calling other people savages.

However, seguing to of why the Agarans 'attacked' mcVicar, and why they seem so evil.
I think that mcVicar stumbled across a breeding ground for Agarans, on a planet which may have been rich with hostile life.
This particular breeding ground was the cave in which the Hylotl Missionaries met their end, and McVicar spots their remains, commenting on the various Floran-like pods around the cave, and the hylotl he finds.
Desperate to protect their young from more invaders, the agarans send out a thick cloud of pheromones alerting the ready-to-hatch G2s and the caves' sole G3 to wake and defend the more vulnerable pods.
McVicar mistakes the pheromones for spores, and hastily makes his escape, as the Agarans awaken ready to defend their young.
The hylotl corpses are possibly being used as nutrients for the growing Agarans, and McVicar notices a connection between the hylotl remains and the pods, perhaps a system of roots connecting the two.
He assumes that this breeding ground could result in a horrible disaster on a scale equal to the destruction of earth, and sends the coordinates before losing connection.

Condescending. I don't know if you've noticed, but every planet is rich with hostile life. Even asteroid fields are somehow filled with hostile life.
Condescending. The Agarans also clearly recognize intelligent races, so that they would mistake any of us for hostile invaders automatically is improbable.
Disgust. The Agarans are also disgusting mushroom people, and your marking excuses for them makes me think you're infected with their spores.
Paranoid. If you're infected, we need to purge you. With fire. For your sake as well as ours.
Reverent. All hail the Machine God.

Your tongue seems strange. Have you been away from the hivemind or something?

It's irrelevant whether or not the Agarans can recognize intelligent races. All of the sapient races still have hostile individuals. Unless you're classifying Humans as a beast, that statement is invalid.
Your irrational fear of mushrooms isn't doing anything to help your cause, and if you're going to be racist then your points against the Agarans are practically dripping with bias and therefore won't be accepted in my cause.
Besides, i'm pretty sure I can't receive any possible 'infection' considering i'm roughly 98% machine. Unless your people are under the belief that machines can be infected somehow, which seems implied from 'for your sake as well as ours.'

Going back to Recognizing Intelligent Races, allow me to list individuals from all of the 'Intelligent' races that are hostile.

Humans - Space pirates, bandits, and many others
Florans - The uncommon hunter who kills everything in sight, not often seen anywhere off the Floran Homeworlds.
Avians - I've heard some things about their religion, and i'll just leave it there.
Apex - their oppressive government seems quite hostile.
Glitch - the hivemind relentlessly hunts down outcasts. that sounds hostile.
Hylotl - they clearly are up to no good behind closed doors, they're too quiet to be up to good.

So you see, your response was both inevitable and banal. If you wish to contribute to research on these creatures, perhaps you could start by not burning possible opponents.
I'd assume your childhood must have been quite violent, going around like that.

So the one race that has posed no threat to anyone as of yet, are hostile?
    If anything that is racist.

The way of the Hylotl is the way of peace.
    Glory be to the deep.

There's a number of issues with this.

For one the amount of time that elapses in McVicar's report is far too much.
Secondly McVicar's statement about Hylotl does not tend towards them being incapacitated, much less dead.
Thirdly, you segue out a significant point about McVicar noticing a creature hatching, one which by logs account doesn't register on known creature list.
Fourth, McVicar makes his escape before spores are released and even when they're released he notes that they specifically come from the mushrooms around him.
Fifth, if the Hylotl were solely nutrients, there'd be no need to refer to them as if they changed the situation drastically.

  17. Cloudhopper

    Cloudhopper Weight of the Sky

    • For one, that's a vague statement that I am unable to decipher the meaning of. However if you're referring between his Report and my Post, my post isn't linked to time and not every sentence labeled happens immediately.
    • Secondly his statement about hylotl consists of literally just saying "There's a hylotl here" and "but the hylotl...". That doesn't imply that they're alive either.
    • Thirdly, There's not much to be stated about G3s at the time and making a decisive comment about them wouldn't be wise. Nobody's seen a G3, that's why its not very significant. Additionally, technology isn't infallible.
    • Fourth, this isn't intended to be a superiorly-accurate published paper, those events are happening simultaneously. Besides, if the cave had enough spores to be visible once he was escaping, it must've started before he left. Also, the mushrooms are most likely agarans in disguise, as seen when you examine certain mushrooms as a glitch.
    • Fifth, if You saw a dead person with tendrils coming out connecting it to a dead person, you wouldn't sit down and make an analysis of every possible situation. Charlton was an investigative reporter, not a scientist.
There is also a number of issues with your counterpost. Everything seems to be without direction, each point unrelated to the previous one. To me, this post seems just like a purposeless compilation of corrections. If you have a differing opinion, perhaps the stock model of "Agarans are evil, they killed/infected McVicar and are mind-controlling hylotl", feel welcome to provide some evidence. I will continue to stick to my current beliefs, which are supported with moderate evidence, despite the primitive common belief that Agarans are evil. Everyone assumed agarans were attacking the florans, McVicar said otherwise. Everyone thought they relentlessly killed those Hylotl without reason, but it hasn't exactly been proven. The common belief changes over time, and consensus reality seems to be the situation here.

the API and Agaran Supporters will most likely continue to fight for equality of these Misunderstood Mushrooms.

Remember: Just because it's been said doesn't make it true, just because it hasn't been said doesn't make it not true.
    Or something like that.

So the one race that has relentlessly attempted to destroy the florans because of interactions early in their species' history is peaceful?
The race that was on their planet, developing just like the humans might have, until someone made the mistake and crashed on their planet,
causing their civilization to go to space carrying their fears of most-likely aggressive creatures on their planet, not developing concepts such as
aliens or other intelligent life, all-in-all being in the wrong place at the wrong time,
Deserve to be attacked and prevented from developing a culture for all of eternity as revenge for attacking the one race that advocated peace and forgiveness?

I could go on and on, but that's off-topic and we've been trying to steer back on topic.

Deadpan. Are you stupid? Of course I've been away from the hivemind - every Glitch in this conversation is among the outcasts. This is also how all Glitch talk when there are meat bags in the conversation.

Condescending. Of course it's relevant. They are clearly an intelligent species as well, and general observations on their behavior have shown that they do not attack on site in most cases.
Logical. Obviously in this case they were hiding something.

Raving. My irrational fear? Their disgusting spores entered into a crack in my hull, contaminating my circuits and causing irreparable damage to my OS. My religion subroutine were reactivated and reprogrammed, and now I have to worship the Machine God that was imagined by the recompiled subroutine. See logs archived earlier in this discussion for full records.
Reverent. All hail the Machine God.
Annoyed. And now I have to say that all the damn time.
Rage. The disgusting mushroom people must be destroyed, lest they cause more brain damage to my fellow Glitch, the race obviously favored by the Machine God.
Reverent. All hail the Machine God.

Apoplectic. This unit is living proof that you are wrong.

Going back to Recognizing Intelligent Races, allow me to list individuals from all of the 'Intelligent' races that are hostile.

Disgusted. A few bad apples in humanity are not indicative of a bad race. Your racism disgusts me.

Shocked. The Florans are nothing but kind to the Glitch. How can you defame them in this manner? Your racism disgusts me.

Disgusted. Your religious intolerance is deplorable. Besides, they do not actively hunt sacrifices, rather they simply lure them in with tales of tombs stuffed with treasure.

Disgusted. The Apex race works to progress science, and therefore technology. The Machine God cares not for their methods. Your racism disgusts me.

Disgusted. Are you daft? Do Agarans look even remotely like outcast Glitch? As much as I hate the Agarans, even I don't believe that they are dumb enough to think that the hive mind Glitch think they are outcasts. Your stupidity disgusts me.

Disgusted. Your intolerance for other cultures is disgusting. Your racism disgusts me.

Zeal. We are at war. Burning things is necessary, and use of technology to burn things pleases the Machine God.
Reverent. All hail the Machine God.

Umm... Isn't luring sacrifices similar enough to hunting them to be the same for our purposes? I mean, if good old Elmer Fudd runs after bugs bunny and shoots him, he has hunted bugs. If he has placed a trap on the floor (filled with "an opportunity for treasure") and bugs trips the trap and dies, bugs has been hunted once again.

Also, more than anything else, I think its funny to think of the hylotl as sitting "behind closed doors" plotting against their fellow races. At any rate it would make for a good story.
