    Hey!

I was just thinking: it would really amazing, if not already implemented, if offline players can ask NPC's in
villages, or random people to join them on their adventures. This can be someone
you saved, a mercenary looking for work, a family member (another suggestion), etc.
They would follow you everywhere and you can give basic commands such as: follow, stay,
chat, or more advanced commands such as keeping watch over a certain village, moon, or planet.
You can share loot with them, they even have their own personality....possibilities!

How about giving equipments to these companions like in Skyrim?

Yep, this one is upvoted. Great idea!

This is a great idea. Possibilities on balancing them would be that you have to pay them for each mission. They could even be set to the same level difficulty, so if they die they don't just re-spawn.

Nope, it's a character named Atsushi Otani from Lovely Complex.

From what I heard, they want to integrate followers into Starbound, but they don't want them to become glorified pets like in Skyrim, where while personalities were improved over Oblivion, they still become glorified pets as they all act the same way in the only thing that matters: combat.

If they could make companions unique and with a personality to the degree of Dragon Age: Origins, or Mass Effect 1, then that would be awesome.

Nice! It really looks like nami though; not to mention your ironic title: Astral Cartographer. Nami is a navigator and draws maps.

I really hope this becomes a thing or something similar at least. I need my rag-tag band of misfits and spacefaring astro-heroes.

It'd also be nice if the NPC's were specialists, like Sniper, Close Combat, Medic, Cook, and so on.

At the very least I hope they have something similar to Terraria's set-up, where, while the NPC's don't follow you, you still "gather" them.

maybe have them like renegades on your ship, (once you have upgraded it far enough) and then you could add them to your party, and beam down to the planet, once you claim a planet as your homeplanet you could build them homes on the surface... if they added a random NPC generator were it has different personalities or action habits that could be cool, go around the galaxy and find unique NPC's that act differently, some are programed to fight some are programed to run, some are happy, some are sad, some are cooks, some are engineers, some are smart, some are dumb, some will help you, some will give you info to lead you astray.

I would love to have some NPC mechanics, but I'm not sure how easy it'd be to integrate well with multiple players, because having an "away team" for every person and you have a 5 person group, that's a lot of extra NPCs running around. For those who are alone, it'd be really nice.
I would like to see NPCs that aren't combat oriented as well, an engineer might help set up your base, an archaeologist might be handy with a gun (though nowhere near as good as a gunslinger) and follow you down into the ruins and give you special clues as to the civilization that created it, as well as some secret passages that you can't find on your own.

it would be just like the random generator for Mobs except the Visual apperance wouldn't have as much variety.
The generator would be divided into 5 different steps.
    1. Appearance (including gender, hair styles, race, etc. pretty much the randomize button on character creation)
    2. Personality (how do they interact with you... they would only have a few lines of text, some to you some to other NPC's, and some just random, BUT Personality would determine what they say, like if they are Happy, depressed, snarky, boastorous, intelligent, etc.)
    3. Battle (2 options here, they either Fight mobs, or run from mobs)
3.5. Weapon (-for fighting NPC's only- NPC's would normally have weaker weapons, though NPC's can be generated with a random weapon they are still tiered like normal weapon generators)
    4. Spec (this would be divided down between if they fight or not but under the Non fighting randomizor you would see Cooking specs, Merchant Spec, Tailoring Spec... Fighting Spec's are mainly Mercenaries or Heros/ Adventurers, maybe Historians or Archaeologists [weaker combat stats but have a bit more dialog in situation instances] )
    5. Abilities (much like the pokemon inspired abilities on mobs this would apply to fighting NPC's only, this would be effected by the battle spec of the Npc but you could see a variety of different abilites like lighting zap, heal, etc.)

This would work quite well for randomizing characters. I use a similar process in my D&D campaign, I pick a class, build something fairly usual and generic, but then I add a twist to it (usually in the form of another class) that gives the character some more interesting qualities. I would also like to see a "style" of combat that a character can have, do they run into everything guns blazing? Or do they provide covering fire as you progress? Generally this is tied to the personality and spec of the character, but sometimes you'd get something kinda ridiculous, like a boastful tank who cowers behind a wall at every opportunity. Abilities are the same way, though again, wierd things can happen at times, because they make it so much easier to think of this character as a character, rather than just a bit of code. And sometimes these strange combinations might be really effective with your playstyle.

NPC's could have a variety of different text based on how they are generated, the text could be based off, 1 gender, 2 race, 3 Personality (I'm thinking 8-10 personalities, I'm not sure if there could be multi personality NPCs), 4 Spec (since battle determines spec anyways) (thinking like 10 Non battle specs and 15 battle specs), I know this is all in Vain but I'm going to draw up this idea in a form of flow chart, of course have some situational dialog based on different randomizors

So after working out my idea for randomizers, We would need to have 604 lines of dialog written with each random NPC having a combination of 26 lines of dialog, then leave some room for situational dialog, like encountering dungeons or relics or bosses.

Ohoh! another idea pop up in my head that if adding quest twisting. we should create betrayal quest if you join in group and you been used as tool and now they dispose of you, throwing you into pit full monster, and now you want go off search your revenge to get your rightfully loot you wanted. Hey sometime few groups of people doesn't really want to share ppl who are going out of the group like gangs.
