That damned UFO :P

Hello, I've just rage quit the game a little and am wondering if I hit a bug or what.

I did the tutorial first time around and after quite a lot of time consuming mining, taking me hours to find all the materials, I finally build the distress beacon on top of my house and trigger it, it explodes, and I'm in a boss fight. (incidentally I think this could be better signposted, it being a tutorial I was not expecting a rather hard boss when I had only my starting equipment)

So I die a bunch of times, and one time I teleport down and the UFO is gone. Disappeared. So now it dawns on me I have to again get all the iron, copper, silver and pixels to make another one. :(

Though I know what I'm up against this time, so I mine more and more, I clear out a prison, I amass enough to get some good iron armour and I build an iron bow, I make a arrow hole in my house to shoot the UFO out of, I make a distress beacon and call the UFO...

I shoot it once, and it flies away... It's gone again. :S So I'm guessing I have to go through all that again? :/

If this is a bug then fair enough, but it's been immensely frustrating considering its this boss that I read unlocks the stuff that attracted me to the game in the first place, I can't bring myself to go mining for more iron/copper/silver just to trigger another one and find it flies off, so was hoping someone could fill me in as at present this rules out me wishing to continue with the game, despite loving what I've seen so far.

    Thanks!

I'm having this problem too, I was fighting the UFO, got it to 3 bars left, then it just goes "nope" and flies off...

Took me forever (dozen+ deaths), but mine never left. It DID move far off to the right and I had to hunt it down.

Apparently it will fly up, but you can still hit it with your bow.

However, the best way I've found to fight it is to build walls and when it comes down, build a roof over it.

This will stop it from moving and you can kill it anyway you like.

We killed it with 4 people on the server, took a long time, we weren't expecting sudden deathguins, but killing it got us a molten core for a higher tech anvil, no info as to what we can use that for yet however.

The UFO is a level 10 Boss. Super Tough for characters that can barely scrap at night on a level 1 world.

Put some coal in the fuel converter on your spaceship and fly to another planet (Iron gear is in the level 5 range, in I'm not mistaken). Farm that planet to get better gear/blueprints/tech.

When you can survive handily on a level 9 world, you're ready to go back and try and jack up the UFO. Beating it will allow you access to the Beta sector, where planets will be level 11-20. Rinse, repeat.

Just so you know, I built the beacon three damned times before I came to the forums and figured out you could use coal to leave the first rock.

Also, if you want to ever come back to your level one planet, make sure to designate it as 'Home' in the navigation console. Made that mistake and lost my kickass shanty in the vastness of the cosmos.

oooooh I had no idea about the coal thing. I thought this was the path to actually get to other planets in the first place. :)

Yeah this makes all the difference in the world, it was planet exploring I was dying to do. Wiki entry for the UFO made it sound like that's the one that got you starbound, no pun intended.

Awesome, I didn't know this. It'll save me quite a bit of mining.

I figured all this stuff out after i beat it with copper armour and an iron hunting bow >.<

I boxed myself in and made a tiny, half block gap in the roof and filled that gap with wooden beams, the UFO would hover above that, shoot down but not be able to get through the gap and any penguins that happens to go over the top of that gap would walk straight over due to the beams, the fight took ages due to me only hitting 10s on the UFO and the UFO spawning a lot of stuff that wasn't being killed dropped my frame rate quite a bit and I've got a fairly high end system

I knew about the fuel gage but didn't know what to use, now I'm sat with the engine upgrade and not even sure what to do with this so I've passed the time by making myself the best I can be, with full silver but I don't know what to do from here, progression feels like it's hit a halt, I see no better armour in the molten anvil thing, no better weapons, no more quests, other planets seem to have the same sort of layout, a building with enemies and a bunch of caves, no hints towards any quests

You need to use the map upgrade item like a food item or a blueprint, then you unlock the beta sector and the steel recipes. And since steel only needs iron and coal to make you can start improving your gear before going to the beta sector, too.

Yeah. I was under the same impression when I did the quest. It was a bit misleading. Tiy is fixing the starter quests to help lead you on the right path some time tonight I believe.

I have exactly the same problem... this is icredible annoying. He had 2 life points left again and then he disappeared. I don't have so many time to play games actually but if you spend so much efford to collect these necessery items, it's just annyoing. I'm at rage currently. FU**-

Aye I figured this out but steel armour requires gold and gold is annoyingly rare, throughout digging I can come out with 300 odd copper, 500 iron but only ever have around 20 gold seeing as i only seem find it in batches of 3 ores and even finding those is a pain

is this what needs to be done? grind for gold? >.<

The size of gold veins seems to increase with depth.
I digged down to the core on two planets, am drowning in iron and copper, have full silver armor and a gold pickaxe... but no decent (ranged) weapon. The UFO would probably take ages with the iron bow :(

Unfortunately that seems to be the only way for now. The best place to mind gold I'be found was an underground slime biome (slime stone and poison water), since it's fairly deep and easy to dig through, essentially like dirt.
You also find ores in NPC settlements and dungeons (search all the containers), but it's not too much and which ores you find is random.

But it's a good 70 bars needed for the armour alone which is going to make this whole process very grindy and for the chance of my save being wiped by the beta updates.. doesn't seem like it's sensible :/

I've explored tons of planets so far and despite the standards (temples, labs) I've only ever found:

    - The monkey in a cage event which gave me some weak hammer
    - two houses which contained the purple beings (the ones that appear in the temples) and a weird golem looking thing next to a chest, I got a legendary weapon from this followed by some basic ores

The two houses only appeared on a large planet, but as said, while I'm a patient person and willing to invest the time into bettering my character, with the chances of saves being wiped..

I ended up killing it with an iron bow and it really did take ages >.<

I've got a hole system not 50 blocks above lava and a gold pickaxe, mass amounts of coal/iron but very little iron and the lower blocks on some of the tougher planets really take a while to dig through, even with the gold making the whole process even longer
