Can we get an objective look at how things are in relative stages? How did Terraria do bosses and whatnot when it was still in the Furious Koala version?

Well, there are some aspects of Terraria that I prefer over Starbound as of right now but overall I still prefer Starbound.

Starbound is very much an incomplete game and those things that I love in Terraria I expect to make their way to Starbound. For example, the bossfights in Starbound leave a bit to be desired. They aren't very good atm. Other than moving to the next sector, they don't offer much of anything and the fights themselves are quite tame and easily cheesed. In Terraria, bosses are much more exciting and rewarding. This is just my opinion but I know just from reading these forums that many people agree with it.

The loot in Starbound needs much more love. Again though, I expect we'll get much more of this further in development. Right now our race's armors are nothing more than cosmetic differences. Eventually we'll have our set bonuses which will add an entirely new dimension to the game. But Starbound needs to go beyond that. Right now the legendary weapons in Starbound don't feel legendary at all. Aside from the alpha sector, I have yet to find a Purple weapon I prefer to use over the Blue or Greens I commonly find. Most of these issues though can be attributed to the fact the game is very much still in early beta.

All that being said though, I already have more time played in Starbound than I do in Terraria and I've owned Starbound for a fraction of the time. Starbound offers much more overall game where in my eyes, Terraria hits a very definitive end where you have nothing really left to do or look forward to and quickly get bored. Also, considering the fact that Starbound is so early in the beta that the completed game will have so much more to offer than it does now, Starbound will ultimately be the clear winner in my eyes.

If you die in starbound its usually your on fault (Save for giant surprise meteors pre-having a shield or the very rare 1 hit ko spikes). And it once weather radar is added and the X sector is balance 1 hits shouldn't happen anymore.

If you die in terraria, its usually the game didn't tell you something and just suddenly does it, like going into a dungeon before killing a boss or hitting a jar and it explodes on you.

Between the two I'd say terraria is the bigger troll.

I love Starbound, I've put over 100 hours into it now.. which I'd say is a lot for a game that isn't even out of early beta.
I don't understand this mindset though, or why the game attracts people who want such an easy game.

Terraria isn't a troll, it just presents an actual challenge to you. Starbound in terms of difficulty is a joke of a game, I love it for everything else it has to offer but if someone asked me for a good game with a challenge Starbound is probably the last game I'd ever recommend to them.

I think what I like about Terraria mobs as opposed to Starbound is that in terraria mobs do not stop. Wait. Then re-aggro. They keep coming non stop.

In Starbound, currently, the biggest challenge with regular mobs is the patience to wait and re-evaluate where they will land after their jump and hit them. I'm a bit too hyperactive for all the patience and waiting around. Much prefer the "knockback action" approach to combat that terraria has. But this is a subjective opinion, of course.

I vote for Terraria vs. Starbound, as in the ungodly huge crossover game that will come when the planets align and Tiy is richer than us all.

Starbound can use some of the intense ai and enemy/boss variation that Terraria has, but there is no beating the exploration potential starbound provides, the fact that its a new game with a fresh modding community helps too.

Terraria is never going to get the winning vote on a starbound forum. The topic is pointless. At the stage that the game is currently in you can't compare one to the other. I can beat starbound in 8 hrs. I have to play Terraria for 50 hrs to beat it. GG WP!

What does starbound offer that terraria doesnt besides planets and lore? Better weapons, nope. better bosses, nope. better reg enemies, nope. better building, nope. I could go on for another 500 characters but why bother...

Mind what you say, the birds are watching. The birds are not your friend.

And the building generator is capable of construction feats quite similar to the dungeon.

Added the ability to mine multiple tiles without resetting the hit count on every tile.
You can now turn platforms into stairs using the hammer.
You can now catch and release several critters using the Bug Net.

I think this looks familiar from somewhere.....but I can't recall just from where.

Part of what pushes vote towards Starbound over Terraria is the procedurally generated planets and maps. In Terraria, you knew exactly what was in every single world you created. There was always corruption, there were always floating islands, there was always a dungeon, etc. Once you played Terraria once, you've encountered everything there was to possibly encounter.

Starbound will always have the ability to feel at least somewhat new. It's exciting to go to a new planet and discover what secrets it holds and what it even looks like. Even within the same type of biome, there's a lot of variation.

To be fair, Starbound is definitely lacking in some of the things that others have mentioned in this thread. The combat leaves something to be desired. The item drops could be a bit more fantastic. But I have high hopes for CF, and I believe they can address these issues and fix them.

Right now, terraria. Game has stayed with me for a long time and is one of the best indie games of all damn time.

When starbound gets released, we'll see.

This is kind of my thoughts in a nutshell as far as the current version of Starbound goes, although you probably should've backed it up a little bit better than this.

Starbound has some extreme potential. I saw this way back in the day when it was first announced and Redigit said "Hey go check this out!" And in terms of features, assuming that Chucklefish executes it correctly, will surpass Terraria. This primarily being that Terraria did have some problems with engine restrictions, which is why Red wants to make Terraria 2.

But yeah, as far as bosses, items, and enemies... I seriously don't forsee Starbound toppling Terraria. One reason- procedural generation.
Honestly Starbound kinda fell into a trap by procedurally generating so much of the game. There's really a limit as to how much they should have procedurally generated, and I don't think that should have extended into enemies. Comparing Terraria's enemies to Starbound's real quick- Terraria's has a ton of diversity; there's some basic AIs, such as wizard and fighter types, but each have been given special treatment to ensure that they aren't all the same. Starbound.... well, to say the least the enemies don't get the individual attention, and as such a lot of them basically have the same AI. Birds fly at you and spit crap. Ground monsters rush you, and rarely spit crap. That's literally about all the diversity there is in Starbound's enemies. I know that they're planning to have specific body parts adding different AI to monsters, but they best make it exceptional if they don't want it to get boring.

I'm in no way saying Terraria is, and always will be, the better game. Both games have their strengths and weaknesses- Starbound's biggest weakness being that there's very little individual love for enemies and non-racial weapons. I think Starbound will exceed in stuff to do if everything is executed properly. But as of right now Starbound suffers a serious case of "definitely not complete" syndrome.

...Which is why I said it was pointless a while back to compare the two right now; in most cases, complete games > incomplete games. That's subject to change once Starbound hits full release.

Oh ****! Looks like I found something new to do until starbound improves. Everytime there is a new patch I restart my character, the includes this game as well. Terraria update should keep me busy for a few weeks. When I come back to check out starbound I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

*sidenote: The poll system must be messed up because it is not equalling 100%. It isn't even equalling a whole number...
