Currently Starbound is in early alpha. Probably more than half the game is missing from the final product. A lot of the mechanics is absent. Some parts seem to be there as temporal workarounds. Recipes don't make sense (you can craft a comfy bed just out of wood planks, more wood planks is needed to craft a frikin pickaxe than a bed. FU logic). Lanshape of every single planet is generated the same way. There are only 2 kinds of mobs (flying and walking). Yes, only two, with many rng skins. I could go on like that.

There's nothing to compare at the moment.

As of this moment, Terraria is better for me. It's far more polished (and I'm not speaking about bugs) and it has a looong long history with me. It has a very cozy feeling to it, that Starbound just can't compete with its otherworldly pokemon creatures and blue dirt.
But Starbound really has the Space travelling atmosphere. It's like 20th century all over again, when mankind wanted to reach the stars.

Starbound has a lot more potential, IF they can get multiplayer right (server sided and secure) and implement all of their cool planned features (Faster Than Light-style space ship combat, yeaaaah). It'll probably blow Terraria 2 out of the water as well then.

I put around 130 hours into Terraria before I got tired of it. It's an amazing game!

I think that when Starbound fully releases, though, it's gonna out-class Terraria in every way.

And y'know what? That's fine! It doesn't make Terraria any less brilliant <3

Well, Terraria so far has an astounding graphic and real bosses. But let's wait and see what Starbound is going to be.

    Cubeworld or Minecraft?
    Terraria or Starbound?
    Call of Duty or Battlefield?
    Gran Turismo or Forza?
Resident Evil 6 or Resident Evil 4?

You see where I am going with this? There's never going to be a real answer, it's different for everyone and most of the people here on Starbound forums will prefer Starbound. I like both games, I spent so much time playing terraria but Starbound is catching up to the played hours and will most likely go over. For me Starbound is superior even this early in Beta. And will only get better and better. We'll see how Terraria 2 will turn out but honestly, Starbound already have a place in my heart and it's not going anywhere.
And the other games (just for fun): Minecraft, Battlefield, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil 6

This isn't a fair comparison. Terreria is a fully completed, for the most part balanced and refined game. Starbound is still in the early stages of beta.... At the moment Terreria wins hands down, however once Starbound is complete I have no doubt it will be better. No point asking this question now, its like comparing a house to a pile of materials

The whole "it's just a beta" thing doesn't matter. At the end of the day they're both products for sale. Starbound is $15 for a game with a lot of potential, but still feels very hollow. Terraria is a fully fleshed out game for $10 with a lot of content. If I had to recommend to a friend who has played neither, I would say buy Terraria since it's a better game at a better price and therefore a better value.

That being said, the Linux and Mac support alone makes Starbound the default winner for anyone that's not a Windows user. I've set up Linux boxes for my kids, so I've bought them copies of Starbound so we can all play together.

Isn't there 2 swimming creatures if I'm right?.

I don't like these types of comparisons. This one is especially dumb since Starbound is in early beta. I'm just glad both of these games exist.

i know that for me, i got bored of Terraria after 30ish hrs...but i'm at over 120hrs in Starbound already.

Graphics were ugly, especially the way you made constructions compared to Starbound it was aweful, and i hate the circular attack and mining motion.

I really had fun though for those 30hrs, if not i probably would have never even looked at Starbound.

Comparison is fine as long as there is no blood bath involved. I will try to be as unbiased as possible. Terraria is still better than Starbound in terms of content, balance, and completeness overall. Completeness not in terms of alpha, beta, etc, but that the full game is playable, enjoyable, and with few bugs. Patches for Terraria are still rolling in, but obviously not at the size of Starbound's updates. I, however, will rather play Starbound instead of Terraria just because I have already completed Terraria's content several times over. Starbound has potential to be much better than Terraria when the settles down and the game becomes more stable sometimes in the future. Terraria and Starbound may be 2 different games, but I do not think it is going too far to say that Starbound was somewhat inspired by Terraria. No surprise to say Starbound has a great chance to be better than Terraria, but that time is not now. If Terraria 2 ever does come out I will not doubt the possibility that it will be even better than Starbound.

Terraria so far. It's overall better in Starbound's current state, but it still has time to improve.

I'll take a feature in hand over two in the bush any day. I think my main worry about Starbound is that it will try too hard to be everything... I've lived through too many cycles of overhype and huge feature lists to look at the "future of starbound" blog post and expect that all to be done this decade. I have bought the game but I have modest expectations for the future.

They plan to add a way to "visit" multiple worlds. It may through dimension portals or some other generate wordl schtick.

Starbound has a lot more content yet somehow feels much emptier and less enjoyable than Terraria did at launch. This comes in great parts from the overall lack of balance and lackluster gameplay mechanics. There is no real sense of progression, planets feel empty, combat is clunky, movement is more awkward. I'll grant them that house building and the variety of decorations offer a nice upgrade over Terraria, however.

Some might say it's unfair to compare Terraria to a game that is still in Beta, but the scope of the project isn't the same and one would expect Starbound to have learned from its predecessors; yet everything it borrows from Terraria, it somehow renders worse.

I give my vote to Terraria, without any hesitation. Starbound is a huge disappointment so far.

Thats my worry,. i feel that SB is spreading itself thin in trying to be this panacea of a game.

Right now i have to travel to multiple planets to see and experience what shoud be enough for one. All of the SB universe really feels like 1 or 2 planets spread out thin.

Which is why i dont get why people want travel to become even easier than it is now. The more you travel, the more SB lack of content gets exposed.

If SB consisted of only 1 or 2 planets containing all of the content it has, it would feel like 10x the game it is now (so far).

While I agree with your assessment, the devs somehow feel it's accurate to call this a Beta. Someone should take them aside and explain to them the concepts of Alpha and Beta.
