They're both sandbox metroidvania games yes they're going to have similarities, add in the fact that Tiy used to work on Terraria. Saying these games are the exact same is like saying Doom 2 and Quake 2 are the same game with monster reskins.

You can do this with any game in the same genre though, every FPS game looks like a rip-off of the FPS games before it. I don't really see many people complaining about MOBA games all being nearly exact copies of the originals.

Sorry but I read this part, and I'm glad, because you got it all wrong. I'm neither 'condemning' nor saying it is Space Terraria, I just said it really fealt like Terraria. Just that.
And that (TL;DR) I have plenty of sure that until the release this impression of Terraria will be gone.

Starbound will always have people, whether they be commenting or complaining, that it is a Terraria clone or feels like Terraria.

The internet is a relentless place.

The funny part is Terraria got called a 2D Minecraft clone for the longest time. Basically people are annoying and will complain about everything, the trick is knowing what to ignore.

I feel like people use the words "This is a beta" as some kind of shield used to protect against criticism. Like because it's a beta completely whitewashes and invalidates any criticism people may have of the game. It doesn't.

To say this game has to feel like Terraria because it's in the same genre is a copout. Bioshock plays nothing like TF2, neither play like BF4, yet they are all fps.

I would have liked to see the devs take more risks and try to expand this new genre instead of making Terraria In Space. No doubt they worked hard on this title and continue to do so, you can clearly tell they put a lot of effort in this title and it shows well, but as it stands from my experience playing this so far it doesn't really bring anything new to the table. It takes a popular formula, and just copies it. In some areas better than others.

This is just, like, my opinion though, man.

Front loading the game with a bunch of terraria like items dose give you a wrong first impression. I don't think there is a good reason why you need to start out with a pick and torches. You could just as easily start out glow lamps and a mini drill. Lead with what makes you different rather then what makes you the same.

This is the thing a lot of people aren't getting. The beta stage shouldn't be used as a shield, it should be used as a time to take criticisms and opinions in, and see how the game can be made better for it.

I know the devs know this, but it seems a lot of people in the community think they know better.

I made the unholy mistake of suggesting there could be improvements on the Steam forums and am still getting messages telling me I don't know what beta means 3 pages later.

One thing I really feel they missed the boat on here was the races. There are 6 but they all play the same, so what is really the point besides aesthetics?
Let the glitch breath underwater and not need food. Let the bird people double jump and Apex hit harder with melee. Let the Florans be amazing topside but weaker the further they get from it. Those are just ideas spat from the top of my head but it would have been something to add more flavor to the races besides looks.

This could have been an amazing game for customizing your own personal character. Use an axe a lot? Congrats, you are now really good with an axe. Shoot stuff a bunch? Your marksmanship is higher than someone who bashes stuff with a club so you get more damage out of ranged attacks. As it stands now the only thing that separates characters is, well, nothing. Just join a friends server, have them give you gear and congrats, you are now a cookie cutter character. Just like Terraria.

And shipbuilding. I get the lead dev didn't like the looks of when you added onto your ship, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't have liked to at least try. Let's face it, the ship is the central hub of where your character spend his time, traveling back and forth, resting up, stuff like that. There needs to be more depth in that feature. This could have been an excellent opportunity as a pixel and resource dump. Got a large ship? Well now it uses more fuel and takes more pixels to build on.

As it currently stands, this is just Space Terraria, but it could have been so much more, and still could be.

The thing is though it is in beta and beta does mean it's not the finished product. Complaining about aspects missing from gameplay is the equivalent of boiling noodles, tossing them onto a plate, and then complaining that you just ate the worst spaghetti ever. People who think like that absolutely infuriate me. I'm not saying you fall into this category I'm just making a statement. On the other hand the point of a beta is to discuss issues and give constructive feedback. Not sit and stroke the developers ego "omg this is such a gud beta. Yur so much better than all the other developers at beta. Omg so, so, so happy, please let me do naughty things to your left toe." Those people equally infuriate me, if we never mention our concerns our concerns never get fixed. If the devs decided "Hey wouldn't it be cool if like, 1 out of every 5 enemy just randomly inta kills the player for no reason?." If we never tell them we don't like that idea it should probably be changed the game will never evolve.

To directly address your concerns I reiterate it's beta. Difference between races is a planned feature just because it's not in now doesn't mean it wont be. Just because the game is just a Terraria clone in space right now doesn't mean it still will be 2 months from now. Stick with the development, voice your concerns, give them ideas, help them make the game you want to see.

Oh. So we're NOT meant to do that.

Well, looks like Tiy and I had the wrong idea.

Ok so the game is like terrarria. Consider that a compliment. It is terraria but the way I want to be able to play it. Somewhat realistic, fun, detailed, and randomly generated. Lets enjoy this thing and have a blast.

Oh no you and Tiy can do all the naughty toe things you feel like. Just don't let it get in the way of you telling him if an idea needs tweaking.

I feel the game is different i many ways but still slimier in some. Its an RPG and terraria is a sort of freebuild roaming game.

To add onto that, Starbound is ridiculously easy to modify. I've already added a few things myself cause of how stupidly easy it is. They said they wanted to add mod support, and they sure as hell added it. Devs may not like it, but ive already delved into the game files and added shroom soup :p

When Terraria came out, people said it was too much like Minecraft. The thing about Terraria though is that there is no lore so the content can be open to anything. Starbound is sci-fi and structured, while Terraria is fantasy/generic and much more open.

Forgive me ahead of time if it has been stated previously in this thread. (I read the first two pages, not all 4) But I'd like to reply to the OP.

Firstly, yes it's a lot like Terraria, it's in the same genre. (That's like complaining that Call of Duty and Combat Arms are similliar, both have melee weapons, both have camo, both look a lot alike etc.) Any games that share a genre will have things that feel very, very similliar, though I can sort of see your point in that so many things start off in much the same way, oh look I need copper, now iron. This is where I'll say look at human history? We progressed from stone, to copper, bronze etc as well. We were in the iron age for awhile you know. The game progresses this way because it's a more fluid and natural state. Why are the ores named as such? Because 90% of the time it's blatant to anyone over the age of 12 or so (This is not an insult, just where you learn about this shit in School, at least when I was in school.) which is better. Steel>Iron>Copper etc this breaks a bit when you add in silver and gold (As they are soft metals, not often used in tools at all, except precision tools.) I wouldn't so much blame Starbound, or Terraria for this, as much as human nature and ease of reference.

As for not having anything that doesn't feel "Terraria like" again, I see your point in this, in my opinion that's more to do with perspective and mindset, if you go into this game looking for things that are akin, you'll easily find them in buckets. If someone who is an outsider looks over your shoulder and sees it, they will instantly make this reference because it's a 2d Exploration game. Non-gamers especially will see them as near identical. My mindset allows me to see just how DIFFERENT it is from Terraria though, you can mine 3X3, that to me is huge, it gets rid of a lot of the tedium in relation to mining. The exploration blew my mind, I didn't stay on my starter planet long at all (Maybe 30-45 minutes.) Before I was off exploring, and dying hysterically (To much amusement to myself and others.) I went from forests, to icelands, to a desert. Caused my first cave-in of sand and was not only terrified and shocked at how it worked, but I had a feeling of awe at how different it was from other games like this. ( Sand falling STRAIGHT DOWN bores me to no end, it's silly, cascading sand? Massive land slides? Mmmm tasty.) The diablo/borderlands style of weapons is also awesome. I quickly out-grew and threw away my Starter sword (Many others on my server kept it, cause it was higher DPS but it was boring and plain to me, so screw that.) Instead I was using this awesome axe that spit fire! Hell yes, this is all before I even had copper armor! I didn't craft any weapons, why? I could find stuff that was more awesome! :)

Matter Manipulator is still usefull (Even on level 30,40-50 planets.) Why? It has super long-range. I use it to mine stuff from afar, or to cause cave-ins on desert planets when I see enemies coming etc. Why do you "downgrade" to a copper pick? That's more an issue of story-line not being done, remember this game will actually have a storyline in it, it won't be like Terraria in that aspect, it will have quests etc you can do. This also plays into a Robot in Copper armor, have you read the Glitch background, or any of the lore books scattered about the universe? Glitch were programmed to simulate medieval life, and as such are "stuck" in that time period. Some advance out of that, and move on (IE the player) a few are taboo but usefull as guards (Gun-wielding NPC Glitch.) There are splinter factions a plenty if you pay attention to text and flavor text.

All in all, I think if you're looking for things to compare it to Terraria, you'll find them by the dozen, if you let your mind slip out of Terraria mode, you'll find this game has a ton to offer, and remember so many features aren't implemented yet that will make it so much better, examples of this are Story-Line Missions, procedurally generated quests, monster taming, and much later down the road ship to ship combat (At least Tiy said he wanted to try and get it in, who knows if it'll make it.) The best part of all? You're part of the growing process. I realize some people don't think that way, but at this stage of the Beta, player feedback can shape and mold this game, if you find things you dislike, discuss it as we're doing now, maybe you can change your own perspective, maybe you can change the game for the better! Hopefully this is something you read in full, I realize it's a bit wordy, for that I apologize.

Earlier today I ventured into an Apex facility, and among lots of trigger-happy enemies I found a series of logs, detailing the story of some random lab guy who reluctantly performed experiments and eventually witnessed the murder of his superior and had to go into hiding. It gave me kind of a little The Elder Scrolls vibe.

I've never gotten any vibe of that sort while playing Terraria. Please do more of that.

I guess i was also put off by the fact that my armor ressemble medieval armor (i'm playing Glitch). I was unaware of the background of this race (i was like : it's a friggin' robot).
Come to think of it, it's not that bad, and quite funny when you think about it. I'll try another race next time and see what they're up to...

I actually like that about the Glitch. Them being medieval people who happen to be robots. It's a refreshing change from the usual "perfect, highly technologically advanced machines" theme that is prevalent in a lot of works with robots.
