Terraria Much?

Terraria is so simplistic compared to Starbound. Just the fact that you have to travel to different worlds increases the complexity, but that's not the only difference. They both owe a lot to Minecraft and we know that Starbound is going to have more features available when it's out of Beta. But I don't think this thread has offered any constructive feedback, it sounds like a complaint about the Beta. I honestly don't like Terraria because of the limited scope, the annoying corruption, the limited enemies and bosses. If you happen disagree, I couldn't care less.

People are suggesting things that were in Terraria, so expect more things from Terraria if they pass. I'm not saying they are bad things though, just nice convenient things.

Yep, I had the exact same impression. And to be honest, the exact same boredom. My planet doesn't have those fancy buildings, nor dungeons and stuff (i'm still is the first one). The only things I found in my planet were a little shelter with two androids (or whatever) and a sewer. Nothing more.

So, i'm just digging my way down, with a pickaxe, trying to find iron ores and chests, plus grabbing plant fibres and pixels to craft my armor to fight the first boss. Yep, it looks like Terraria and feels like Terraria. And I agree that this is not a good thing, even though it does have a Starbound feel to it, I find it to be too weak.

That being said, I still think that this will change as we progress through the beta phases.

I don't see why it's a problem if they are similar, and that would be true even if I didn't think it would become less similar as time goes on. You can't have a stranglehold over game mechanics, no assets have been stolen and I see no hint of laziness from the devs.

The combat in this game is VERY nice. It makes you think, plan, and hope you won't die. Other than swinging carelessly and getting OP real quick.
Starbound starts off a bit harsh but I love it.
Oh and I'm still looking for the horse mask for the party Saturday...

I think there's a bit of history behind the original idea of making Starbound. If I remember well, while Terraria was still under development, Redigit mentioned at some point that he'd like the game to go in space, give the ability to move to other worlds and players to meet alien races. This is basically where Tiy and his team picked it up from I assume, and started developping Starbound. So no big surprise for me, it is actually exactly what I was expecting from this game. But I could be wrong too...

Initially, Terraria was called a 2D Minecraft. Initially, Starbound will also likely be called a Space Terraria. Over time, it'll mature and grow into its own niche, but until then, we need to suggest which way we go to improve it.

As to using picks and axes when we have a matter manipulator, I feel it does make a certain amount of sense. The MM seems to work by affecting the molecules directly, vibrating them out of alignment with what's around them. In some cases, that may be very effective. However, a tree'll fall faster if you chop it directly across the grain. Rock and ore will crumble if you hit the flaws with the right pressure. I do expect there to be more advanced tools later, but as tier one, dedicated tools you make directly from raw materials? They make sense to me.

But unlike terraria, you could just pack up and leave. You have trees, right? Chop 'em, feed them to the fuel cannister, and find another level 1 planet you can go to. Maybe you find a village, or a dungeon.. or a Glitch castle with horse mounted knights. It is entirely not the game's fault that people don't go out and fly to other planets.

And yes it does start out like Terraria, but it also starts out like Minecraft or any other sandbox survival game. The difference will be on the focus. Terraria is more focused on the metroidvania aspect with lots of loot, lots of enemies and lots of bosses. If anything, Hard Mode is a perfect example of this. It is even called that, a mode. For Starbound, as the beta progresses, hopefully the exploration aspect, the building aspect and the interaction will be more in the foreground. Planned features include for instance a Director Mode, where the server owner can spawn NPCs, buildings, and possess characters for RP. If you check Tiyuris youtube site, you can see the work in progress intros for two of the races. There will be a storyline to each race as well.

TLDR; Wait until we get to stage 2 of the beta with condemning it as Space Terraria.

It has it similarities for sure, but I think that has more to do with being in the same genre. I mean look at all those survival games. I've played 4-5 zombie ones, all very much alike, but each game still gave a different experience.

I've put in about 4 hours so far into the Beta, and the crafting/mining is very much like terraria (kinda wish the combat was more like terreria TBO), but I find the exploration is much better in this game. Even on the starting planet...you don't know what you'll find.

So far I came across a florian prison, egyptian type tomb, and robot facility. I couldn't see stuff like that in terarria.

So to answer your question it is not too much like Terraria. And my only complaint so far in the game would be the current state of combat. But still the big sell for me is exploration and I just want to keep seeing things I've not seen before.

Here are some thoughts that come to mind.

You are sort of stranded on a planet with only a matter manipulator that does some generic functions. You have to start somewhere in order to fuel your ship and find your new home. Mining and harvesting the planetary elements is really the only thing you can do at this point. Sure they could have renamed them from copper to (insert sci-fi name) or silver to (insert sci-fi name) but sometimes that just makes it too confusing for people to remember the tier progression. Everyone is familiar with the established ore progression in these games.

Since the matter manipulator is so generic and not really the best tool for all tasks it makes sense that you would build specialized tools to mine and chop down trees. Since you probably aren't that great at building tools that would come out pretty basic and simply get the job done. (basic pick axe, axe, etc.)

EDIT: And as far as the whole Terraria thing goes, people shouldn't let that deter them from not trying the game out. What if Re-Logic put this game out as a spiritual successor to Terraria? How would you look at this game then? Would it interest you? Would people not play it because it was a Terraria rip off? I'm thinking not. It's all about the games.

I found combat better then in terraria. Especially when I finally got a shield for myself, and can actively block damager and strategize. Though it's useless in the beta sector, but it's a beta, I'm sure there'll be better shields. Also you can dual wield :D

This game is already in beta you know, but i still think its better than Terraria, and they are not too much alike.

This is pretty much a spiritual successor to Terraria anyway, but they're not so similar that you could call it a copy.

Generic FPS #1650 comes out and no one bats an eyelash, but a few side scrolling sandbox adventure/mining/building games come out and people panic.

It's kind of like how Blizzard used to make amazing games by taking a fun formula and just improving on it.

Fair point, I got a shield and boy did it make a world of difference. I unlocked beta also but refused to go yet, too scared :)

I feel like the attack animation from my sword doesn't always reach my target, yet it gets hit and Combat also feels very slow at times. Again this isn't a complaint with the game, just my thoughts on its current state. It also wouldn't be the first time end up liking something I originally felt indifferent about.

Hehe yeah, there's a world of difference between a 1 hander and a two hander. 1 handers only seem to swipe sideways. And don't worry, the combat animations will be upgraded down the line I think, so it should become more interesting.. now if there only was a one handed pistol so I can combo it with a sword >.>

*drooool* Dammit, I'm hitting that lvl10 planet with the sky pirates when I get home... after the Fastest game on Ice in Q's winter wonderland of course.. and maybe a Dyson Sphere Daily.. but then for sure! *shakes fist at Star Trek Online doing a winter event during SB beta*

If Earth was destroyed and I had to relocate to another planet, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to fashion a drill out of rubble. I'd probably be hard pressed to even make a pickaxe
