I thought it'd be cool to have a thread just explaining who your character is, what they do, what they have done, etc.
So tell your stories!

I'll go first:
My character is called Orion. He's not exactly on good terms with the Galactic Federation, but he's saved their asses a couple of times in the past. He likes the Hyotl's peaceful culture and is astounded by the miracle of pizza.

He travels the galaxy with his trusty penguin army by his side, conquering the universe two flippers at a time.

 

Orion sounds interesting... plus the galaxy could always use more people who love pizza.

My character's name is Xavier.

Complete Backstory:

Xavier started his journey into space a while back, when he was invited along by some friends of his that were in the protectorate that had graduated. They hung out on a safe, harmless planet for a bit, allowing Xavier to gain somewhat of an interest in space travel. However.. this did not last long. They were attacked, by a group of sadistic, extremist cultists and a deadly Bone Dragon. His friends were killed despite their valiant efforts and combat training, and in the end the stragglers killed by the Bone Dragon, Xavier paniced, and was forced to leave his dead friends, in the process grabbing one of their matter manipulators and dashing to their ship and FTL'ing off to an unknown planet where he had to survive and refuel the ship.

He went on to continue surviving as he was forced to in the uniuverse, planet jumping, upgrading his materials as he was forced to learn how to survive, how to build, how to use his MM, and come to terms with the death of his friends. ... He had to fight pirates, fight a sick robot that was laid upon him by the cultists, and eventually.. run right into the bone dragon that killed his friends a month or two after the fact.

He laid waste to it, but it still got away, and left him out cold while it retreated. Xavier was found by a sweeping protectorate crew, and rescued. His efforts, and what he had done, were recognized and led to him being given an invitation to join the protectorate, which he took.

This all followed into the 1.0 build where graduation went sour, and he was forced to yet again flee while Earth was destroyed. But in the end, throughout the ensuing journey... he got revenge for his friends, and did more than he ever thought he could before, and came out strong.

He's very intelligent, able to create silicon boards and circuitry in a snap. He's decked out in solarium armor which can resist even the most extreme of temperatures, and a solarium katana that he made himself, and upgraded with hi-tech components. He adventures throughout the galaxy, seeing the sights, enjoying his freedom, and basking in the peace that he has gotten for himself, and his friends.

My character is named Frag, but it's a pseudonyme

He is more known as the Gunsmith, a guy making crazy guns to whoever ask him
As so, he can make the best, or the worst, but will focus on the best part

Due to the fact that he's not linked in anyway to the corporations (Graxus, Necrolix, these ones..), he's actively research by those, who wants either to have him in their corp, or simply to murder him.
They have yet to found him.

Since Frag is quite a happy-go-lucky one, he's sometimes making silly weapons, such as a bananazooka, or a carrot rifle, but is said to have made the most powerful and most dangerous weapon possible, capable of erasing anything that is living in the universe.

Out of those, he's the creator of the VBT serie, as well of the VGT, a healing gun.

He's say to have hacked through the weapons corporations databases, which could explain his knowledge around ranged weaponry

While he's more often running tests on a lost planet, he's sometimes seen wandering around in his ship, the Smokey Quartz II

Recently, due to a space-time hazard, he woke up in Smokey, who was downgraded to tier 1 and badly wounded. Frag found himself 2 years older, and all of his crew was most likely dead.

He quickly realized that he has been warped in an alternate timeline, without any of his gears, but was able to build these back quite fast.


He's still making guns tho, so he find it quite okay.

 

Lord Baconator travels the stars acquiring the ultimate collection of unique monsters, fossils, action figures, and fish. He also runs several large colonies on a variety of planets and invests a great deal of time into improving the quality of life of his colonists while continuing to attract new and unique individuals.

He also has the benefit of getting away with wearing this hat in public where I otherwise couldn't without looking like a daft jackass.


Fun fact: I'm the sort of person who will write a 4 paragraph post over the course of 2 hours and then suddenly decide at the very end that it's not good enough or irrelevant and cut the entire thing down into 3 lines of text before posting it.

 

DJ, a simple human living the most boring desk-job life in the protectorate one could possibly imagine. He is not-so-reluctantly abducted from his high-paying salaryman lifestyle by an outlaw Novakid named Billy (... the kid).

A venerable Hylotl Grand Priestess has foreseen the coming of a great destroyer and her visions implied to her that this human is the key to subverting THE GREAT UNDOING. She hired Billy the Kid to find this person and bring them to her, with the promise that she would be pardoned of any and all her crimes against the Hylotl people. The Grand Priestess also sends one of her finest warriors, a young Hylotl prodigy named Lao Ren, to serve as DJ's personal bodyguard.

On their adventures they pick up your typical ragtag team of misfits:

1. An elder Apex doctor named Kron Klonter who was held prisoner in a maximum security Miniknog prison after trying to avenge the deaths of his wife and child.

2. A pair of Avian siblings. An older brother named Ace Airworthy and his kid-sister, Skye Airworthy. They grew up in a Protectorate colony to a human mother. When she died, Ace had to retire from his career as a pilot to take care of Skye full-time.

3. A simple Glitch merchant simply named Jeb. "Rescued" from a hivemind Glitch Colony. Very OCD. Likes to pretend that he hates being dragged around the universe away from his humble little shop but he's grown fond of his new family.

4. A Floran Princess named Myaku Rootthrasher. She joins the crew seeking adventure and excitement, despite her father's wishes. She grew up in a Floran colony that held disdain towards the Hylotl, so her attitude towards Lao Ren is unfriendly at first.

With a full cast, the crew of the PeaceMaker boldly takes to the stars in search of clues about the looming threat of an ancient enemy known only as "Krekkulon", said to be a planet-sized destroyer of worlds.

My new character is called Cobalt(like, my name).

He awoke on Aether Swarm (X:438696947, Y:939554680) and wandered the planet for days, searching for another of his kind. After about 3 days of that he noticed a small device inside his jacket. Like any person he pressed the big red button, and beamed up for the first time to his ship. He now travels the universe in search for his past.

 

Harambe is the karmic reincarnation of Harambe from Cincinnati zoo hence the angel wings. In this reincarnation she is female. She is a rebel who wants to fight the big ape.

My main Vanilla characters would be Dr. Ravenclaw and Erchius Strife.

Dr. Ravenclaw is an Avian Grounded scientist, astounded by the technology of the Miniknog. She pilots a Miniknog ship of course, filled with robots and samples of strange species. Despite attempting to establish friendly relations with the Miniknog, they are a little upset at charges of trespassing and grand theft Automato and also find the idea of an avian in a lab coat unsettling. She searches the galaxy on the hunt for the elusive and rare species of Derrick and the great Serpent Droid. Priesthood Avians regard her as "A mean, feathered Apex freak who has no place among our people" but it doesn't bother her one bit, she prefers the company of robots and machines over people.

Erchius Strife is a Novakid outlaw with a craving for sparkly minerals. She will take any rock that gleams, should it be a diamond or mere quartz, yet dismisses other pricy things like gold. Infamously known throughout the stars for painting entire Geode biomes in various hues of purple and also known negatively among Avians for stealing their decorative gems and crystal tech. Her favorite rock is of course the one she is named after; the Erchius Crystal. Strife and her domesticated Moontant raid the galaxy in search of shiny rocks in hopes of creating her purple crystalized paradise in the core of her home moon. Strife has two other goals in life, to find the mythical Purple Crystal Tree and take it home, and to find out how the heck the Erchius Horror was formed so she can create more of them. the Moontant has no quote on this matter.

(I'd post screenshots under them but Steam likes to black out my game for it as of 1.0. Ravenclaw is a black Avian in lab coat and foundry goggles or a Symbiote, Strife is a purple Novakid who wears a Bandit bandana and typically Cultist armor.)

Malli's Backstory:
[PLOT SPOILERS IN STORY]

Malli was hatched on a forest planet orbiting a gentle star. Both of her parents were Kluexites, and they wanted her to do the things that followers of Kluex do. She studied the Avoscript for a few years, and attended classes. Her mind changed when she saw her cousin leap to her doom from the local tower. Malli was horrified. She started looking for a way off planet before it was her turn. Shortly after coming of age, she asked her parents if she could join the Protectorate to spread the will of Kluex before she ascended, to get a few bonus points with Kluex. Her parents agreed. She walked in the door of the academy and applied to be a Protector. She was finally free! She studied all races of the galaxy, majoring in human history. One day, Malli got a letter from her parents. They said that they were proud of her for being a good follower of Kluex, and that they would meet her in the Aether. They added that they were likely already ascended by the time Malli received the letter. Malli was saddened by the loss of her parents. She vowed to set the rest of her race straight, and find out the truth about Kluex, whether he was an actual god or just a legend. She studied Avian texts in all her spare time, to no avail. After her training, graduation day came. She woke late, then made her way to the auditorium. Then disaster struck as Earth was torn asunder by a large, tentacled space beast. She barely escaped with her life.

After establishing herself a base of operations on a verdant, near-harmless planet in a system far away from what was once Earth, she forged herself some armor. After finding a strange gate on the planet, she charged it and stepped through. There she found a massive hub of trade and conversation. She explored it a bit, then walked out the back. She found a massive door sealed by a stone wall with six holes in it. There she met Esther Bright. After hearing Esther's story, Malli agreed to help stop the evil force that had a hand in destroying Earth. She examined countless objects, looking for clues as to the whereabouts of the six keys that unlocked the door. Her journey led her into a hunting cavern, through a sunken library, into the bowels of a massive temple to Kluex (she REALLY didn't like that one.) and through a base occupied by the evil and unscrupulous Miniknog. In the Miniknog base, she destroyed the Miniknog's leader, which was just a giant computer. But, shortly after destroying the highly advanced computer known as Big Ape, she was captured by the Miniknog.

Malli was put in a testing room and strapped to a chair. Some Apex in masks came in and punched her a few times. They demanded to know where Lana Blake was. Malli refused to talk. The evil scientists started experimenting on her. First, they injected her with an experimental version of their serum designed to work on more races. The process was painful. She started becoming more birdlike. Her breasts disappeared, and her hands, once soft and feathery, mutated into another set of taloned claws. She grew tail feathers, and her legs became more like those of a bird. She also gained higher intelligence. The scientists grafted a pair of wings into her back. They submitted her to a series of pinpricks and electric shocks to make sure the wings moved. Then, they put her in a tall room with a door at the top. Malli tried to fly out, but was too heavy, because the serum wasn't strong enough to revert her bone mass to a flyable point. The scientists decided to dispose of her. They opened the door to the room and came in with guns. Malli was able to run fast enough to grab the pistol from one of the scientists, clawing his eyes out. She shot him, then killed the other disposal trooper. She ran down the hallway as sirens and alarms blared. She found the radio room and barricaded herself in. She was now smart enough to figure out the controls. She radioed for evacuation. Shortly after, she heard gunshots and screaming from outside, along with an explosion or two. Then she heard pounding on the radio room door. She opened it, and Lana Blake was there. She had come herself to rescue Malli. They escaped back to the Outpost. Lana said "Now we're even. They got you, huh? Wings, tail feathers... Why didn't your arms turn into wings?".

Then Malli killed a bunch of racist cultists and a mechanical bone dragon. Malli had five keys. Esther revealed the sixth. The door cracked open and the final push began. Malli said "Wait. If the Ruin was going to break the seal anyway, why did we need the keys?". Esther looked up in thought, then shrugged.

Malli could potentially get the wings surgically removed, but she wants to keep them just to spite the Stargazers. She really does not like those guys. She sees them as a suicide cult and the leading cause of Avian deaths.

Ian's (me, kinda) Backstory:

It was 2048. Humanity was under the thumb of a New World Order. The government appropriated the DNA of a man named Ian Lux. It was studied, decoded, then stored away and forgotten.

27 years before the ruin of Earth. The overthrow of the New World Order is long behind humanity. The human military is short on soldiers to train due to the Hylotl Pacifism Enlightenment of 2568. The human military needs soldiers in case of a war. They decide to resort to cloning. They find Ian's DNA sequence stored on an old piece of hardware, and find it to be suitable.

The science division of the military starts cloning Ian. They aren't trying to make super soldiers, just expendable redshirts. Since the DNA sequence was stored on a computer and DNA arranging was discovered long ago, there is little to no loss in quality of the finished product. They have all the quirks and mannerisms of the original, but none of his memories. They are quick to demand basic human rights, which the government quickly concedes, as all the Ians think alike and would likely form a mob. One of them ends up getting kicked out of the military for disrespecting his commander and questioning his orders. This one is the focus of our story.

Ian 19-EC was quietly discharged without notifying the other Ians. He decided to try being a Protector. There were concerns at first about letting an errant clone join the Protectorate, but a Hylotl equality-centered group got behind him. He was in the auditorium the day Earth fell.

Thinking quickly and recklessly, Ian grabbed a Manipulator from a dead Protector who had been snapped in two by a tentacle and quickly made his way to a ship. He fled as Earth, along with the military and most of the other Ians, was destroyed.

Ian woke up with his ship above a green, Earth-like planet. He spent the next month or so living off the land with what knowledge he had learned in both the USCM and the Protectorate. He had a couple of neighbors on that planet, but his innate lack of social skills kept him from making friends with them. After charging a strange gate on the planet, he went through a wormhole and wound up at the Outpost. It was there that he found a note on the bulletin board about a gang called the Blue Eagles. Ian liked both eagles and the color blue, so he copied down the coordinates and warped to the planet marked. There he met Malli, who had just come back from a Stargazer raid. She pointed her gun at Ian, and he just stood there. Malli lowered her weapon, then offered Ian a place in the gang. After replacing his dinky iron armor with some solarized violium armor and giving him some new gear and outfitting him in uniform, she told Ian where to go next. He flew his ship around, finding all the planets Malli had marked. Ian vowed to defend the galaxy alongside his new friends.

So, what are your parents like?
My parents are dead. They jumped off the tower.
Dang. At least you had parents. My only parent was a cold, unfeeling robot arm.

Epitomizing the best and worst of the purpose of the Knights, Abigail exists as an anomaly much like her mother, and makes a habit of irking just the right deities much like both of her parents. Endlessly defiant, fearlessly disobedient, and inevitably lost in hopelessness, she is the girl with everything, and yet nothing.

The child of [data corrupted] and Gearspark, Abigail has more than a few genes and identities in her makeup, and surfed more dimensions before reaching double digits than most people do in a lifetime. She considers no place her home, but Eden her home world.

Early in her lifetime, a void event caused her to lose her mother, and rift authorities detained her father-having lost both parents and being threatened with the loss of her planet as a result of redacted timelines, she took all she could and fled to a new universe. She has been hopping universes ever since, trying to start a new life, and never quite making it. She managed the marvelous feat of stealing the Eden planetary cruiser from Shanoa-nearly, anyway. Instead of detaining her, Shanoa allowed her to have the ship, recalling who she was and why she might be here. She also helped Abigail better develop some of her magitech.

Abigail had quickly submitted herself to deities in order that she might be able to remain existing despite the removal of her mother's timeline, but had secret motives to use them for her own ends. She was able to secure a boon from Chronos to manipulate time, and then used her technology to replicate the magic in future instances until she was capable of manipulating it without the need of a deity. She now follows her own path, and has grazes with deities here and there.

She was overjoyed at the return of her father, and the two of them are making up for lost time as she tries to find her way.


Abigail is basically a dimension traveler for the mere reason I use her as a character in a lot of my games, but basically skipped over to Starbound's universe from Terrraria's, after I got bored of it.

Sylee Carmine

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Sylee is definitely in the third category. A streetwise kid from Earth with a long rap sheet of petty theft and assault, Sylee considers herself lucky that she's not in a USCM prison right now. (Unluckily, this is because the Earth was destroyed just before she could be shipped off of it. Sylee's trying to look on the bright side though.)

As the buildings crumbled around her, Sylee escaped the panicking guards and ended up taking shelter on one of the last Protectorate ships, where she found a mortally wounded Protectorate desperately trying to work the controls. Under his instructions, Sylee was able to pilot the ship out of Earth's atmosphere (though not without taking a few hits) and escape. The poor guy died soon after as there were no medical supplies aboard (a terrible oversight, in Sylee's opinion) and she never even knew his name. After taking his matter manipulator and giving him a respectful space burial*, she set about the grim business of surviving. Fortunately the planet she happened to be orbiting seemed pretty peaceful. Unfortunately she has started getting messages from some old lady through the matter manipulator. The crazy old coot seems to think Sylee is a member of the Protectorate, and Sylee isn't about to correct her on that. Whatever is left of the human government probably wouldn't think twice about adding 'ship theft' and 'unauthorized use of matter manipulator' to her charges.

There are probably better candidates for saving the universe though...

Floran iss greatesst hunter ever! Floran iss tired of hunting little animalss. Wanted to hunt mosst dangerouss game - meat perssonss! Floran hearss about Protectorate. Floran in Protectorate hunt worsst criminalss in Universse. Lotss of sstabbing, and other meat perssonss not be upsset! They even THANK Floran! Floran musst join Protectorate.

Protectorate very boring. Lotss of classsess. Sssit and lissten. Floran iss patient. Finally iss day when Floran iss officially part of Protectorate. Floran getss tool to break and make thingss. Not asss much fun asss ssstabbing thingss but Floran take it anyway.

Then, planet isss attacked! Floran ssurprissed, had to run away. Floran never runss away! Musst become even better hunter, musst desstroy tentacle thing. Floran hass found the besst hunt. Floran isss happy.

Floran conquerss fear of fire and findss nice hat. Floran likess blue and pantsss with little cape that floofss when Floran jumpss. Floran makess wingss out of boness. They do not help Floran fly though. Maybe if Floran ssstabs bird-perssonss and addss featherss...

Ajira's story is the cutest yet most terrifying thing
