I thought of a workaround for elevators, even better really, put in teleporter pads, like put one on bottom floor of your house and one on top floor and activate it and you are teleported to the other pad. You could make the mat cost high so people don't go crazy with them. Just make it so you can't teleport farther than you can see, then people won't break the game by making the helleporter.
This could make for some very interesting design, I'll be disappointed if these don't make it into the game.
I like the idea of having teleporter pads, but I'd like to see standard elevators as well. The "how far you can see" constraint is sticky, though, because as far as I know how far you can see is dependent on your resolution and your zoom level. Although I can see why Chucklefish dislikes hellevators, my thinking is that if you've actually gotten to the planet's core (or mantle, however deep you can go) then being able to set up a teleporter between surface and core shouldn't be restricted, I don't think. Perhaps as a compromise in order to allow your pad to reach to that depth you need to attach it to a strong, relatively hard-to-get power source.
Well they could make elevators that function in the same way as a teleporter pad. Instead of moving parts and pulling you up and down, you just have a animation just like the teleporter pad, except with elevator the animation is you getting into a elevator, and then you come out the other elevator. The whole idea is a workaround of the moving parts elevator which would be difficult to get working in game. The bonus points for teleporter pads is that they fit in with the sci-fi theme and don't require you to go straight up and down allowing for more versatility and variety in base design.
An elevator would still be quite nice to have. No secret base is complete without a 2 minute elevator ride into the depths! Attacking aliens optional.
I think both should be used, with about the same price. The teleporters would probably be starter tech for the Apex race, while being unlockables for the other races.
In the future, a pulley, winch and metal box will cost the same as an ultra-high tech quantum disassembly machine, a secure encoded transmitter and a reassembler? Wow.
I like the idea, but not the whole "on screen" thing. If you have gotten to the core of a planet, it would be nice to be able to teleport right back up to the surface, drop off mined materials, etc. You could also have a mining outpost that can be easily and quickly reached using teleporters, mine, teleport, mine, teleport. Or you could hide one in the grass that when entered leads to lava and watch people walk on it accidentally.
As Bart said "hard to add". But I also say I will be disappointed if in a Futuristic Game, the only way to elevation in buildings is STAIRS. There is awesome potential in this, from Elevators to that same Teleportation Pads to get us in the several floors of a building, etc... Then I support this. :alien:
Which is why I still think background doors would very easy to add. You have a vertical shaft with platforms and doors on the wall (placed like the paintings but different art). Then you can at least imagine its an elevator without any crazy coding. Just sprite art. yay.
Well hopefully we can get this up on the reddit style suggestion list that they are implementing soon. We'll see how many upvotes it gets.
I thought of a great solution!!!! While this is a good idea I feel it makes it too easy to mine certain areas that may have better ores further down. It should still be a challenge to get to otherwise there is just no reason to limit inventory space if you can just go back and fourth with ease. Remember that gadget in terraria? the magic mirror? its purpose was to let you go home but it was a one way trip. Simple solution, Have a teleportal entrance and a teleportal exit. It only works one way to return you to the surface, Then you have to walk back. Still saves time without making the game too easy IMO. what do you think?
That, but instead of my idea it could be a little less quick of a trip by having an elevator from surface to core. That would fix balance and whatnot. I don't know exactly how deep planets go, but a large world on terraria took 30-40 seconds to go down a fast falling hellavator, so maybe 1-2 minutes each trip?
Why not Zoidberg? Erm, I mean, both. Also, how do I shoot pictures... Inserting them doesn't work for me.
What if the two teleport pads need to be connected by a cable/pipe or something of the sort? This means that for short-distance teleporting, such as around your house/base, it is simple and cheap. For anything longer than that, it would take a considerable amount of time, effort, and money to setup.
Elevators are more resource consuming and less effective, with reduced speed. So yes, teleporter pads are a good idea. I'd be surprised if something similar to this doesn't find it to the game, teleportation is stereotypically sci-fi.
This would probably be the best compromise for elevators if they cant make them work properly (moving platform). Just place background doors on the same vertical axis and done, instant elevator. Two sizes for vehicles and people, just stand in front of the door and use whatever key command to move up and down floors. You can even use screen scrolling for effect to feel like your traveling instead of instantly moving to the next doorway.
