Teleportation and the question of OPness

Hello friends all is well. I was playing Terraria recently and came across the most irritating and tedious thing possible, the issue of teleportation to other players/ locations. True, Terraria does have the magic mirror, (which allows you to teleport to your spawn point) but in the specific case of dungeon hunting, when one friend is on the complete other side of a large world and you're at the dungeon, there is a mutual feeling of annoyance. long story short, what is the possibility of teleportation in Starbound, and how will this affect the balance of travel and convenience? All opinions welcome.

Hmm. If you can beam up to other players ships, that would be a good way of regrouping. It would probably still require backtracking, but since the party would be together that would take some of the annoyance out of it.

I agree, though if the ships are programmed to be in a sort of orbit ( meaning you beam down in a different location for each ship or it changes over time) then it may prove even more annoying.

I'm fairly sure you can beam up to your ship from anywhere on the planet's surface. That also means you can't be underground, and possibly not indoors either.

That's news to me. It would have to be fuel in your inventory, otherwise you could run out of it in your space ship and get stranded since you can't beam up.

True, maybe setting up certain items like satellites and certain computers would allow you to build/ create a setup for teleportation?

I imagine there will be some kind of beacon or tracking device eventually.

I have noticed on the streams that players will look for each other, Tiy was on a planet waiting for Molly and she (aside from telling him to calm his tits ) teleported down near by and asked where he was just as she came across him. That being said, I believe they both teleported down in the same spot.
Would prob be annoying to start until more tech becomes available

I'm hoping that we'll be able to choose from multiple points on the planet to beam down to in order to cut down on situations like that. It would also be nice if we had some kind of teleport pad as others have mentioned though, with some sort of planetary limit of course.

It was once said (can't remember where, I think it was a question being answered at i49) that we will be allowed to create teleport pads as to where our ships can specificly beam us down onto. Using this tactic we could build outposts or checkpoints, assuming we have the technology. A friend could even simply gary one with them when he or she goes exploring then put it down so you could beam there. I assume there to be requirements or limits though.

I don't think beaming up will require fuel but I do believe there will be restrictions (ie no beaming up from underground). Also I believe there will be a way to send something from your inventory directly to your ship (which might cost pixels to perform). Also, there does not appear thus far to be a way to change your beam-down location (but I'm sure some method will exist to do this).

Regarding players beaming to one another's location, it appears that we will be able to meet up onboard our ships (perhaps determined simply by whomever sends an invite to the other player) and then beam down from that ships transport pad. I don't think beaming around a planet in order to quickly meet up with another player will be possible, however it might be possible once the party system is fully implemented. Rather than this I'd prefer a type of site-to-site transport pad we could craft that could be linked to another transport pad via wiring system?) I don't want players being able to beam around without use of in-game equipment. Not as a party option.

I'd rather not have people be able to beam to me whenever they want. If I'm playing with a medium sized server it could get annoying. If there is a way to do it I would hope that there is also a way to prevent people teleporting to you.

Teleporting is a server feature. So there will always be commands like in the tshock server for terraria.

This. Much like the Magic Mirror from Terraria, that level of convenience may just not be available to you right away. I understand that the Magic Mirror did what the current teleport already does, which is allow you to get back home quickly, but I'm using the Mirror as an example of a convenience that you won't have right away but might instead need to either craft or find. Indeed, a beacon or tracking device like Nami mentioned.

I'm pretty sure the "beaming requires fuel" is just a misinformed rumor. I've read/watched pretty much everything related to starbound and have only seen that recently popping up in forum threads with no references as to where it came from. Now I'm not saying I'm not infallible or that I know everything about starbound, I'm just saying I haven't seen it from anything official.

I would like restrictions as well on teleporting, like for example a timer or an energy bar for the ship that needs to recharge before you can teleport back to your ship.

I doubt they will do anything to limit beaming up to the ship without having a good reason for it. Since they probably won't allow you to escape from underground, the only reason to add a recharge timer or fuel cost would be to deter players from "diving" to the surface to kill enemies for loot and "surfacing" to heal after every fight, allowing them to advance to more difficult planets before having sufficient gear. The thing is, I think the time wasted by having to repeatedly beam up and down over and over is a big enough deterrent for this sort of behavior. While it does work in other games, it is rarely as effective as gathering resources in an area that matches your strength.

I hope there's no travel wait like in MapleStory. I hate that. I guess Teleportation is just intsa traveling.

I wouldn't mind a fuel cost, honestly. Like a percentage or somethin. Not a large amount but definitely noticeable if used repeatedly because just because reasons just because.

I'd prefer no fuel cost. But i think it will be impossible to beam up from underground - and about the fuel cost, i'm pretty sure that one's a no-go. You could get stuck, if you happened to not have any tools with you.... That is, if the block-thingy isn't locked to your inventory.

    My Preferences:

    1) No fuel cost to beam, but no ability to beam to or from underground areas (ie. must have clear line of sight between player and "roof" of the map. Pretty sure this is the current implementation, as others have noted.

    2) Some manner of enhanced teleportation pad or other device that *does* allow beaming to the ship from anywhere, and then back to that spot. This device should have high cost, and perhaps an additional per use cost as well.

    3) For party gathering purposes, ability to "lock on" to another member of your party from the ship and beam directly to them. A beam to surface locations costs nothing. Beaming to an underground location is possible, but carries significant cost.
