you could potentially do that, But i still think it should be an option so you can steer clear of the whole research aspect in general. I know some speedrunners which actually do, do games with techtrees, but at the same time I know others that would totally avoid them because it slows it down, as the point is to run through the game, despite if its hard for them or not. Look at ymiri, or HERO, they can beat terrarias skeletron on the first night with nothing but a blow-pipe, and get the stuff inside instantly. I wouldn't want to get the loot and end up researching how to use it before I actually get to, or anything of such.
Agreed. We aren't saying tech should take weeks in game, or even that it should be mandatory for everyone, just that it's a cool idea we'd like to see in game and I think there are a lot of advantages to adding such a system. I'm not suggesting we know nothing, I'm just suggesting that I know how to drive a car and I understand the very high level workings of a car, but if you dropped me off in the middle of nowhere with a crap load of tools, I wouldn't be able to figure out how to build the thing in my lifetime. I think the tech tree gives you a feeling of accomplishment and an idea of the magnitude of what you are accomplishing. If I were (IRL) to build a car, I wouldn't be like "oh, cool. Now what?". I'd be like "OMG LOOK AT WHAT I JUST COMPLETED! IT TOOK ME HOURS/WEEKS/MONTHS/YEARS, BUT I BUILT A CAR FROM THE ORE UP! WHAT NOW, CHUCK NORRIS?!?!"
I really like this idea, but I think instead of time progressed research you could test things in your lab for example. You could also take apart a item or a weapon and study it and learn how to create it while loosing the item in the process. One could also buy blueprints from npcs and learn from that. You could maybe take lessons from npcs in certain categories. You could take electronics and melee weaponry lessons from Glitches and learn Enviroment from florans. You whould not be able to learn from too advanced blueprints or take apart a advanced tool or weapon like a laser gun.
I agree with it being in game but, you should be able to change the amount of research you do so like you can choose: none; very little; normal; a lot; overwhelming
