    Yeah, from reading all of this, I think come people are mislead by the name "Tech Chest". There is a difference in the two.

    So When you say tech chest, your not talking about the in game item Hi-Tech chest? your talking about a specific chest in a specific apex dungeon>?

  3. welly321

    welly321 Orbital Explorer

    It was blue, I've found techs in the blue chests before though.

    I have not, in all of my playing, ever seen a Blue Tech Chest with a Tech in it. One needs to find the GREEN tech chests, and those are scattered radomly, one in every 7 or 8 planets. one has to circumnavigate the planet to find them.

    Hi-Tech Chests in Dungeons are regular chests with regular chest loot
    TECH CHESTS are blue high tech chests the the end of an apex lab facility that is underground that has a tesla spikes trap maze with platforms you have to jump through to get to the end when you get to the end there will be a pedestal with a single blue high tech chest that has only 1 loot and 1 loot only a tech.

    I do believe I've found a green chest before and I think your right it
    Are you sure thats the only place to find them?

    Ok clarification time.
    A tech chest, the one I'm referencing, is a chest that will upon opening 100% of the time have a tech chip within a high tech chest.
    Usually these are common at the end of a jump puzzle at the end of an Apex dungeon.
    Before the patch I founds ONE tech chip in a high tech chest outside of an apex dungeon for the energy dash chip.
    But that was back in irritated koala.

    In this patch.
    I have tested multiple characters, at multiple co-ords, that have these Apex jump puzzles, and all of said characters, that have visited said planet, and gone through the jump puzzle at the end (before and after wipe) have contained said tech chip.

    So here's what I know. there are 10 11 techs in the game.
    http://starbounder.org/Tech

    The sectors I retrieved the tech chips from where in Alpha, Beta, and Gamma.
    So a tech is not determined by what sector you're in. (as far as I know)

    I retrieved all 5 of the same tech chip's from different chests, in different sectors, on the same character.

    Not just one character finding the same tech, then going on to a different character and finding the same tech,
    The same, bloody character found the same bloody tech,

    5 bloody times.

    So in figuring in odds, or even luck, this shouldn't be possible.

    Considering how many systems, galaxies, and planets this game has, to get the same item 5 times in a row just shouldn't happen. Good, bad, or ugly.

    So here's the killer question.

    What determines, in the games script, code, or logic, what tech chip spawns in a tech chest?

    As for luck, I found 3 diifferent techs on the next 3 chests I found they were all different techs the 6th being gravity neutralizer, the 7th, Morph ball, and the 8th the Butterfly boost.
    So My luck aint THAT bad. :p

    Someone put a quip of code up earlier. Tier 1 only spawns dash and Pulse, Tier two spawns all of Tier one, and a couple others, and Tier three spawns its own, and all from the prior tiers.

    When I get out of work in the AM, I'll go running through T2/T3 with a few of my buddies to see if we can accumulate more evidence regarding tech drops. I personally have only found techs in Apex facilities (End of the tesla jump puzzles) but we'll keep our eyes peeled around the core of each world we visit, too.

    I thought something was up. 3 of the 5 I checked were in in alpha. Though the question now is what tech is considered what tier?

    btw, chest contents aren't randomized in regards to content. The universe seed generates the loot table which is identical across all clients. So when it comes to tech, if you find a bubble grav tech in a chest on a specific world, you can share those coordinates and someone else (as long as they are not on the same server as you) can go there and loot the same tech in the same chest.

    Do you have evidence to back this? As I understand it, loot tables are not static.

    Game files to the rescue:

    There is only one chest in the game capable of holding techs. (Only one entry in 'default.treasurechests' that uses the 'techTreasure' treasure pool:
    Code:
      "techChest" : [
        {
          "containers" : [ "techchest2" ],
          "treasurePool" : "techTreasure",
          "minimumLevel" : 1
        }
      ],

    The 'techTreasure' pool seems to be divided up into three tiers:
    Code:
      "techTreasure" : [

      [1, {
            "pool" : [
              [0.33, [ "doublejumpTech-chip", 1] ],
              [0.33, [ "dashTech-chip", 1] ]

    I would imagine that this means that the chests are tied to the sectors so alpha only allows a choice between double jump/dash (pool 1), beta gets pool 2, and so forth.

    I don't know enough about how the pools work, nor what 'poolRounds' does so I may be completely wrong but If some worlds are only spawning with pool 1 it would show favoritism towards jump/dash thus making the RNG seem broken.

    Yes, every shared item on the locations lists people post including the google docs one, multiple posts on reddit showing where items were, and then I go there and check it out, get the same exact stuff, except for if it's a randomized weapon, then i still find a weapon but not the same one as anyone else looting that chest.

    check it out

    Loot tables are static; or to be more correct I should say that the odds of an item generating in a chest are static.
    The actual contents (as determined by the pool) are not static as that is left up to the RNG.

    A single tech chest on any given world should generate the same way each time using the same pool but it's contents will be slightly different each time as the pool & RNG will be used to fill it.

    Obviously odds are static.

    The items are not.

    I've gotten quite a few jumps and dashes as well, which is annoying since I'm trying to get targeted blink.
    EDIT: Literally found one minutes after making this post.

    My suggestion to fix the issue, once the devs get down to fine tuning:
    Either have Hi-Tech Circuit items in the chest, 2-3 per chest, and techs could be crafted using those. More desirable techs would cost more circuits.

    Option two would be similar to 1, but instead of circuits in the chests, the techs are there like they are now. However, techs can be disassembled into circuits for re-purposing into a chosen tech.

    I have no idea what's going on any more. because I was under that same theroy that the loot would be different. Then I actually went to one of the planets and got a mech tech exactly where it said it was going to be.
